In Loving Memory Of Nancy J. Higginbotham November 30, 1958 - June 4,
2005 We remember today more than any other day. For today, would have been her
48th birthday. We can still hear her laughter and see her smiling face, for it
seems like only yesterday when heaven called. Our hearts still yearn for her,
our ears still want to hear her, and we still miss her hugs and kisses. Don't
fret though, because she wouldn't want to us to be sad. For she would want us to
celebrate, be happy, and have one with her, for you know she's having one with
us. So, put a smile on your party face and lets all celebrate her birthday like
she would like us to do. Because, as she would put it, I have an idea that
today will be one of our happiest ones together ever. Always remembering and
loving... Tracey, Tracey, Jeremy and Sabrina, and the rest of the family and

Higginbotham (ca1923-2006) MS/FL
HAL HIGGINBOTHAM, 83 Law Enforcement LAKELAND - Kenneth Howell "Hal"
Higginbotham died Monday, December 4 at Lakeland Regional Medical Center. Cause
of death was due to complications from cancer and COPD. Hal was born in Calhoun
City, MS. and moved to Lakeland in 1946 after honorable discharge from the Army.
A proud member of the "greatest generation," Hal served in WWII as a member of
the elite 517th Parachute Infantry. He was honorably discharged with the rank of
Staff Sergeant and several medals for bravery including a Purple Heart and two
Bronze stars. Hal was wounded twice and retained a bullet in his throat. One
Bronze Star was awarded for service during his refusal to be evacuated from
barrage in Belgium, though badly wounded. Despite heavy snowfall and
obliteration of roads, his major said, Hal crawled and carried supplies by hand
over considerable distances in snow to ensure that his company never "went
without" demonstrating exemplary courage and devotion to duty. Hal's devotion to
country and extraordinary sense of duty and courage served him well during his
36 year career in law enforcement starting in 1952. Hal was known for integrity
and honesty as a top crime fighter with gifts for problem-solving, legal
understanding, and "getting the job done." While known for his ability to
"outsmart the crooks" his positive influence and genuine belief in people
sometimes gave them a second chance to make better life decisions and he cared
enough to often follow up to see how they were doing. Hal was adept at fostering
cooperation with the "good" as well as the "bad folks." Hal served under two
sheriffs as a deputy and an officer. He moved on to serve in various roles under
five county judges and three state attorneys until retirement in 1988. These
roles included chief investigator and intake investigator for the 10th Judicial
Circuit where he was a criminal justice system gatekeeper. His investigations
led to key decisions about whether cases forwarded to the State Attorney were
worthy of prosecution. After retirement he enjoyed his truck, tractors,
landscaping, fishing, and "building/fixing things!" Hal was devoted to his
family and will be greatly missed by daughter and son in-law Janis and Ken
Bruwelheide of Bozeman, MT, his son Kenneth and daughter in-law Brenda of
Lakeland, and beloved grandchildren Lauren, Lisa, and Kenny. His wife Nita
preceded him in death in 1970. In lieu of flowers donations made be made to
Lighthouse Ministries 117 E. Magnolia, Lakeland, Fl 33803. Visitation for family
and friends will be Thursday Dec. 7 from 6-8 PM at the Gentry-Morrison Southside

AM at the Funeral Home Chapel.

Glenn Norman Higginbotham (1913-2006) IL/FL
TARPON SPRINGS - A "catcher" in an aerialist act, Glenn Higginbotham swept
Connie Waller off her feet.
Or was it the other way around?
Mr. Higginbotham, a gymnast and assistant coach at Normal University in
Bloomington, Ill., and his future wife ended up on the flying trapeze.
Her parents, part of the "Flying Fishers" with Ringling Bros. Circus, no doubt
were pleased.
That was years ago, before Mr. and Mrs. Higginbotham retired to Florida and ran
a dance studio in Tarpon Springs and later in New Port Richey.
Mr. Higginbotham, formerly of St. Petersburg, died last Saturday (Dec. 2, 2006)
at Bay Tree Rehabilitation & Nursing Center, Palm Harbor. He was 93.
A daughter, Debra May, asked her mother Tuesday to recall the romantic scenario
that led to a 69-year marriage.
Her grandparents "needed a catcher, and my dad was young and strong," May said
after speaking to her mother, a nursing home patient recovering from a recent
fall. "They needed someone, and he filled the bill.
"My dad liked my mother," May said, "and my mother liked my dad. He felt it was
his chance to be next to this beautiful young woman and get to know her better."
Until she met her future husband, Mrs. Higginbotham had no interest in the
trapeze. She wanted to dance.
Born in Shanahan, Ill., Mr. Higginbotham came to St. Petersburg from Bloomington
with his wife in 1935.
They moved to Tarpon Springs in 1953, then to New Port Richey in 1978 and
returned in 1988 to Tarpon Springs.
He was a carpenter and a member of First United Methodist Church and the Lions
Club of Tarpon Springs. He was a 32nd degree Mason.
Survivors beside his wife include two sons, Herb May, Tarpon Springs, and John
Hollembeak, Newark, Del.; two daughters, Debra May, Tarpon Springs, and Demaris
Hollembeak, Newark; four grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.
Vinson Funeral Home, Tarpon Springs, is in charge of arrangements.
