One Hundred and Twelve Guineas Reward. Whereas on Sunday night the
25th of November last, there were two offices belonging to Mr. John Sweeny
of
Templemore, feloniously broke open by some evil-minded villains;
in one of said houses, were two sporting Does, the property of John C.
Carden, Esq; whose throats were cut, and the carcasses, &c. taken away:
Now we the Templemore Light Dragoons, having a just abhorrence to all such
audacious offences, do hereby promise to pay the sum annexed to our names,
to any person who will discover and prosecute to conviction (within six
months from the date hereof) the
person or persons concerned in said felony; and the person concerned
will discover his accomplices (?) (except the person who absolutely cut
said
Does throats) such person shall be intitled to the above reward, and
application will be made for his or her pardon.

From David Orr of Dublin:
"The earliest reference to the Hewson name in these locations
is 1694 when Joseph Hewson leased land (along with others) at Grogan
Hill from a John Warneford. Grogan Hill is just west of Rathdowney."
A Thomas Hewson of Grogan Hill is recorded in Rathdowney Parish
records as buried 20 May 1786. The baptisms of two of his children, Rose
in 1756 and Thomas in 1762 are also recorded.
The earliest reference to Clonakenny is the death of Joseph Hewson
recorded as 17 July 1765 in Rathdowny parish records. His will mentions
his wife Margret and sons John, Henry and Joseph (eldest, second, third)
and his brother George. A George Hewson of Clonakenny was buried
in 1794 (Rathdowney Parish records)
The marriage of the third son, Joseph, to Elizabeth Mason of
the Parish of Eirke is recorded as 18 Feb 1783 in Ossory Marriage Licences.
Two of their children are recorded in Rathdowney Parish records. These
are: John, baptised 25 Mar 1787 and Francis, interred 14 June 1791.
Moving to Hargraft: The marriage of John Hargraft of Ballyboy,
King’s Co. to Elizabeth Hewson of Johnstown in the Union of Rathdowney
is recorded in Ossory Marriage Licences as 30 Aug 1749. Two of their children
are recorded in the Rathdowney Parish records. These are a son Humphry
who was baptised 23 Dec 1756, and a son Joseph who was buried 9 Jan 1767.
A William Hargraft was living in Errill townland in the parish
of Rathdowney in 1827. He is recorded in the Tithe Applotment returns as
having less than one acre of land, which suggests that he was a retired
farmer. I believe that he was also a son of John's, and in addition was
George Hargraft's father, as George's elder son was named William.
A Mary Hargraft, probably a daughter of John's, married an Edward
Odlum
in 1781.
A Thomas Hargraft lived in Templemore at the same time as George.
He married Mary Woods in 1823. Both George and Thomas were trustees
named in the will of Andrew Hewson who died in 1827, the father
of Andrew who started the Cobourg line.
George Hargraft married Dorothea Walsh on 25 Aug
1826 in Templemore Parish church. Witnesses were Andrew Hewson and
Edmund Hewson. I believe Dorothea was a sister of Mary Ann Walsh
who married Andrew Hewson in 1810. This would make George and Andrew
brothers in law.
The following is taken from the registry of the Reverend Edward Bacon
as published in "Irish Ancestor, Vol. XVII, No. 1, 1985." The magazine
has been out of business for some time.
