McMains was born in Milford, Ohio. His ancestry can be traced back to
this grandfather, William McMains who was from Pennsylvania. This book
focuses on the Methodist minister's "radical" activism as
representative of settlers in the area of New Mexico and Colorado
known as the Maxwell Land Grant. McMains held that the land in question
was actually public land, open to homesteading, while the Maxwell Land
Grant Company maintained that the land belonged to the company, and
homesteaders who had not purchased or leased land from them, were
considered tresspassers and subject to ejectment. The book provides
some genealogical material concerning Oscar P. McMains, his siblings,
his parents and grandparents. |
