Application
for Mortuary Warrant (To pay for burial expenses of widow) |
Summary
: After the civil war, pension funds were set up to assist veteran's
and their spouses/widows. The Federal government provided pensions for
Union veterans, and southern states set up pension funds for
Confederate veterans. The State of Texas had such a fund. This
application was filed by Mary E. Elkins McMains, the widow of Joseph
Washington McMains. He was mustered into the 36th Texas Cavalry,
commanded by Captain John Tom. The date he was mustered in was
Feb. 20, 1864, with the rank of Private. After some trepidation,
the application was approved, beginning Sept. 1, 1916. Mary continued
to receive
the pension until her death (June 17, 1932), at which time her son,
Andrew
P. McMains petitioned the State to provide funds for her burial (see
page
11).
