In 1895, there was a 5-year old male child named Cleo Mcmains
living at the Iowa Sodiers' Orphans Home, Davenport IA. The State of
Iowa currently holds the records for this institution, but they do not
have records going back this far. I have not been able to obtain much
information on this child. I do know that the Home was initially
intended to care for the children of deceased and disabled Union
soldiers. In later years, as the need for this service diminished, the
Home opened its doors to orphaned and "destitute" children from all of
Iowa. It is likely that Cleo was one of these children, as his birth
date makes it unlikely that he was the son of a Union soldier. WHO
ARE HIS PARENTS?|

There is an age difference between this
census, and the 1895 census, but as this is the only male Cleo Mcmains
I have
located, and being that both sets of data have Mahaska County in
common,
I believe this to be the same person. This transcription also found on
1920 Mahaska County Census page
