LEAVES FIVE BLIND

Andy McMains, Buried Today, Leaves Peculiarly Afflicted Family. Wife and Children Blind.

Five blind children and a widow whose eyesight is almost gone is the family that survives Andy McMains, who was buried from his home on Adricks street this afternoon.  he is also survived by one son Charley McMains of St. Louis who isn't so afflicted and by a daughter who has good sight.  The five children were born blind.  Mr. McMains himself had very poor sight.
Charley, the son from St. Louis, is a well remembered Fort Scott boy.  He has been in the St. Louis police service for many years, being now a desk sargenat at one of the important stations of the city.  Upon him will fall a heavy responsibility of the care of his mother and brothers and sisters.  He has always been much of a support to them.  The father had an income from a pension of $24 a month, he having served in a Kansas regiment in the war.  Charley has always kept in close touch with his home folks and throughout all the years of his absence he has been very solicitous for their welfare, contributing largely to their comfort.  In eleven years he hasn't lost ten days' time from his work in St. Louis.

Contributors notes:  The name of the street in Ft Scott is actually ANDRICK, it is misspelled in the news article.  While the headlines spell Andrew's name MCMAINS you will notice it is MCMAIN in the text.  This is most likely because the typesetter was short of the letter 's' and had to create a typo.  Dolph McMains, should be DOLPHUS MCMAINS.  Dolph was the short version, future Dolphus McMains will have variations of nicknames, including Doc.  Bryan McMains is my Grandfather, he was blind but raised three sighted sons, Bryan Winton MCMAINS Jr, [still living]; James Dolphus MCMAINS [still living and called Doc in the family]; Allen Richard MCMAINS [my father still living].  The second and third sons are called by their middle names Dolphus and Richard, as is the Scot tradition.  Be aware when doing MCMAINS research that this old tradition of calling all but the first born son by his middle name was wide spread in the American members of the clan and can cause problems for researchers!  Often even official records will show only the middle name,  representing it as the first name.
