Penally Court and the Rowe Family
Dating from the 14th century and with some walls supposed to be 7 ft. thick, little remains of the Court House estate where a Court Leet was held there twice a year to deal with misdemeanors and disputes, at Easter and at Michaelmas.
At the turn of the 17th century Court Leet became known as Penally Court Farm and stood where Penally Farm stands today. In 1618 the Court House was threatened by the ingress of the sea when about 60 acres were underwater. The present house at Penally Court Farm dates from 1858 where the ruins of the old Court can still be seen.
Ruins of the 14th century Court House
It appears that the Rowe family came to Penally Court Farm sometime before 1670, for the Hearth Tax lists Thomas Rowe at Court House liable for two hearths. Thomas's son, William was the next Rowe to inhabit Penally Court and then William's son, Thomas (d.1791).
The Land Tax returns of 1786 lists Lord Milford as the owner with Thomas Rowe as tenant. This Thomas Rowe died in 1791 aged 64, and by his wife Anne daughter of the Revd. Philip Elliott of Annikell, he had a son, Revd. Thomas Rowe, Curate of Penally Church and Rector of Yerbeston & Loveston who succeeded to Penally Court. His son, George Rowe, became a doctor at Haverfordwest. The Revd. Thomas Rowe died in 1810.
The Revd. Thomas Rowe married Patty Cornock, daughter of Cornelius Cornock of Tenby and St. Ishmael's. In 1810 Thomas's widow, Patty, leased Penally Court to her son-in-law, William Waters. In 1808 Patty Cornock had inherited Great Hoaten Farm in St. Ishmael's from her aunt, Dinah Davies and by 1813 Patty and her family were living at Great Hoaten.
Patty Rowe (nee' Cornock) continued to live at Great Hoaten until her death in 1831. Her daughter Margaret Rowe married Thomas Davies of Talbenny and their descendants continued at Great Hoaten until at least the 1930s. Margaret Rowe's daughter, Martha Davies was born at Great Hoaten in 1842. She married William Henry Feild of Fold Farm, Herbrandston. Martha Davies and William Henry Feild were my great, great grandparents.
