The Manor

of

Ketteringham

The manor of Ketteringham once belonged to the de Vere family. Lora de Vere, daughter of Hugh de Vere, 4th Earl of Oxford brought into her marriage with Reginald de Augentein the manor of Ketteringham, Norfolk. Henry Grey, son of Sir Thomas Grey and Joan Mowbray, held the manor by right of his wife, Emma Appleyard whose father, Sir William Appleyard had acquired the manor from the trustees of Margaret Bokenham. In 1492 the property was bequeathed by the Will of Henry Grey's son, Sir Henry Grey to Thomas Heveningham.

The village of Ketteringham lies just a few miles from Norwich and has been associated with the Heveningham family since the late 15th century when Thomas Heveningham married Anne Yarde, the heiress to the  Ketteringham estates of Sir Henry Grey who died about 1492.

Anne was the daughter of Thomas Yerde of Denton Court in Kent.  Her mother was Jane Scot of Scot's Hall, Smeeth, Kent. She was also the step daughter of Sir Henry Grey of Ketteringham who was her mother's  second husband.  Anne's husband, Thomas Heveningham was the son and heir of Sir John Heveningham of Heveningham in Suffolk and his wife, Alice Savill.

Thomas and Anne's son, Sir John Heveningham held the manor for 36 years until his death in 1536. Sir John had married Alice Shelton the daughter of Sir Ralph Shelton of Shelton.  Their son, Sir Anthony Heveningham inherited the manor which continued in the Heveningham family until it was sold in 1717 to the Atkyns family.  Sir Anthony's brother, Erasmus Heveningham married Mary Moyle, whose mother was of the house of Stanley, and was the founder of the Staffordshire branch of the family.
