“An old settler of these parts, Herman Burow, Sr., died on Saturday evening at 6 o’clock from old age. He reached the advanced age of 83 years and 29 days. The deceased was born in Stuckow, Pommern. In the year 1852, he came to America and to Appleton. Three years later, he was married with Miss Henrietta Horn and settled with her on a farm in the town of Hustisford, Dodge county. Only three years later, his wife died, leaving him with two children, a son and a daughter. The daughter died only a month after the mother. The son, Robert, lives in Chippewa Falls. About a year later, in 1859, he entered a second marriage with Miss Augusta Yaecke. In the year 1884, he moved to a farm one mile south of here, and two years ago moved to here [Slinger]. His second wife, who survivies, provided him with nine children, of whom five preceded him in death. The surviving children are: Leo, in Horicon; Herman, in Iron Ridge; Alfred, in Hartford; and Lena (Mrs. Chas. Dittmann), in Stevens Point. In addition, he is survived by 17 grandchildren and 5 great-grandchildren. The funeral was held on Tuesday afternoon at 2 o’clock from the home to Union Cemetery, following a ceremony at the Evangelical St. Johannes Church, at which Pastor Mueller officiated.” (from Der Botschafter, Slinger, WI, 29 Jun 1916, front page, col.2).
