Notes for Joseph F. KAMPA
"Joseph Kampa was born in Prussia, on the 18th of March, 1850. Residing there until the year 1870, the family came to America, and Mr. Kampa purchased the farm where he now lives. He was married on the 15th of November, 1870, to Miss T. Balder. They have six children." -- from "History of the Upper Mississippi Valley," St. George Township (1881)

At the time of the 1880 federal census, Joseph was 31 years old and living with his wife Theresa and their six children, August (age 10), Annie Mary (age 9), Francis (age 7), Charles (age 5), Joseph (age 3), and Mary (age 1) in St. George, Benton County, MN. Joseph was working as a farmer at the time. [Source: NA Film No. T9-0615, p. 169A]

At the time of the July 9, 1895 Minnesota state census Joseph was 46 years old, working as a farmer and living with his wife Theresa and ten children in St. George Township, Benton Co. MN. Joseph said he had been living there for 25 years, and that both his parents were of foreign birth.

Joseph immigrated to this country in 1870 when he was only 20 years of age. He and his wife Theresa lived in Duelm all their married life. Joseph became a naturalized citizen of the United States. He served his town in various capacities and at the time of his death he was his town's treasurer, which office he held for several terms. Joseph is buried at St. Lawrence Parish Cemetery in Duelm, Benton County, Minnesota. 64
