Notes for Joseph H. BOTZ
"It was hazardous work [threshing]. Many an injury occurred, a limb lost, and sometimes death was the grim reaper. So did Joseph Botz meet his Maker on Sep. 11, 1907. 'He was instantly killed,' the report read, 'while at work on a threshing machine. He was employed as a tank driver on the Schmidt and Schlarman rig threshing at this time at the Maas farm four miles north of Freeport, MN. It appears he was assisting in putting on one of the belts of the machine, while the same was in motion, when he was caught by the belt and thrown against the separator." From Yzermans, The Mill in the Woods, 1973, p. 18. The compiler of this genealogy faintly remembers the day, and wishes to record the heroic life of the widow in caring for the young family.83
