| Notes for Caroline Ann BALDER |
Caroline, the fifth of nine children, was born in Mar of 1854 in what is now the area of Silesia in Poland - but at that time was the town of Kanitz, Schlessian, a part of Prussia . Her father Carl was a brewer and married to Marie Ratter. On the 20 of Apr 1870, the Balders set sail for America onboard the "Saxonia", which left from Hamburg, Germany. They arrived in New York on May 6, 1870. They settled in Duelm, Benton Co., MN where Caroline was married a bit more than a year later. Caroline spoke Polish and German, and apparetnly was quite outspoken, unlike Martin who was more reserved. Caroline was a sturdy, hard-working, and outgoing farm wife. They lived on a farm next to her parents and raised their 8 children there. Their children grew up speaking Polish and German and, like most kids in that era, they learned English only after starting grade school. 70
Caroline's daughter, Alma, lived with her in Foley, Benton Co., MN after Martin passed away. She took care of her mother, who was suffering from diabetes. Caroline was impressed by Alma's beau, Anthony Kroska. He used to push her in her wheel chair while they went on walks. 71 |
