My Enlistment in the Air Corps
Sowrn in at Fort Snelling 6 Jan 1942
Shipped to Sheppard Field, TX for basic training and entered the aviation mechanics school in Feb 1942.
After graduation from aviation mechanics school - 421st. School Squadron 24 Jun 1942.
Shipped to Santa Monica, CA to take in an A 24 plane specialist school 26 Jun 1942.
4 Aug 1942 shipped to Hunters Field, GA in the 84th Bomb group. He was transfered from the 84th to the 383rd Fighter Squadron. Moved to Waycross, GA 20 Feb 1943.
Emmett was killed 19 Nov 1942* so Basil received a 10 day furlough, his only one. Moved to Pope Field Air Base at Fort Bragg and had A36 planes 29 Jan 1943.
25 Mar 1943 went on maneuvers to Camp Rucker Ozark Army Air Base
15 Apr 1943 went back to Gainsville
Moved to Camp Stoneman, CA in Jul 1943 to be shipped overseas
Boarded the USS Brazil 26 Jul 1943
Landed at Hobart, Tasmania and stayed three days
Went to Perth, Austraila to pick up a convoy
Landed at Bombay, India 6 Sep 1943
Boarded a train in Bombay for Nawada Air Base at Gaya, India 15 Oct 1943
23 Oct 1943 arrived in Dinjan, Assam India
Was in Dinjan from oct 1943 until Sep 1944 when we left for Chengtu, China A6 went to Sian 23 Sep 1944
Back to Chengtu A6 in N ov 1944
Went back to Sian again in Mar 1945 where he stayed until the war was over 15 Aug 1945
Flew to Kunming where he stayed about a week to catch a plane for Kangapara, India (North of Calcutta)
Laid in Kangapara for one month
Caught a boat at Calcutta, India the Sir Patrick Henry in Oct 1945
After 19 days at sea we landed in New York
Caught a train for Camp McCoy, WI in Nov. It was hard to split up with all the old pals.
Home 21 Nov 1945 - had made his trip around the world!19
