Joseph's letter to his niece Clara Scarboro
note: persons of interest have been highlighted
Sheridan, Ark., June 21, 1927

Dear Clara,

Your letter caught me on the fly here. I have never been able to trace our Family Genealogy beyond my Grand-Father, Theophilus Scarboro; Though I am satisfied he was of the same Family as the Scarboroughs for whom the Station on the Central of Georgia Railroad was named. Enos Scarboro lived in Sereven County, near Scarboro Station, if you can get in touch with his Decendants they can give you information, no doubt.

Theophilus Scarborough moved to Bulloch County from Sereven County or Burke County, and married Nancy Brown. He died of pnumonia about 1854, at the age of 52. He was born about 1802. I have never been able to find any Family Record made by him. I think he was one of the Charter Members of: Poplar Springs Church. His grave is in a field on Bob Field's Plantation by a walnut tree, ploughed over.

About 1879 British Trustees advertised to find Heirs of: Sir Frances Drake, The Great English Admiral, who married Miss Scarborough of Scarborough, England, Watering place of the East Coast of England.

Col. Josephus Carup, now deceased, of Swainsboro, Georgia, called my attention to it, and volunteered to trace the Record, and did so. The British Trustees traced two Scarborough brothers who came from England to Virginia before the Revolution of 1776, and their Decendants. One Branch runs through Tenn., Ky., and into Texas; The other through North and South Carolina, Georgia, Florida, Alabama, and Miss. This is our line. The connection was lost on one William Scarborough. But History shows that one William Scarborough lived in Savannah, Georgia, was a merchant, and built and owned the First Steamship that crossed the Atlantic "The City of Savannah" later wrecked at Cape Hatteras, N.C.

Now the gap lies between William Scarborough of Savannah, and Theophilus Scarborough, my Grand-Father; I have been informed that Enos Scarborough moved from Savannah, and settled near Scarboro on the Central Of Georgia Line, and the Station was named for it, and it was from that Section that Grand-Father moved to Bulloch and brought us no Record.

I feel perfectly safe in the view that we are the Line off Decent from the Scarboroughs of English-East Coast for whom the Famous Watering Place was named.

You can readily trace all the Decendants of Grand-Father, Theophilus Scarborough;

  1. Absolon, my Father, (Relingished the "UGH" when he remarried?)

  2. Remer Scarborough

  3. Shadrack Scarborough, Died during the War of 1861-65,   Buried at Mannasas jet, Va.

  4. Aaron Scarorough, Died at Green Cove Springs, Fla. 1925.

  5. Theophilus Scarborough, Crocket, you know, now dead.

Daughters:
Eliza, Mrs. L.P. Woods
Sarah, moved to Florida in 1864, Deceased.
Jane, married Uncle Bill Lanier.

The Remainder, you can trace. Sorry I cannot give you more information. Have been Preaching here about a month, and am tired and nervous. Hope all are well. Love to Everybody,

as ever,
(Uncle Jo)

Although J.A. mentions William Scarborough in this letter, no connection has been made between Theo. and William or Lemuel Scarborough.  Recently on the web, a listing of Lemuel Scarborough came up as owning 2 slaves ~ 1798 Burke County, GA.  As this places Lemuel in the vicinity, our lineage has no record of Theo's father or family line.  Until there is irrefutable proof of  Theo. being a decendant of either of these Scarborough lines, I cannot link him to them.
