Hendon, planter, of the state of NC and county of Bladen for & consideration of love and natural affection which I have and do bear to my son Josiah Richard Hendon and my daughter Mary Hendon, minors, and children of my first wife, as well as for their better future provisions & - - - [three unclear words] do by virtue of these presents give unto the children as before named viz Josiah Richard and Mary the issue of my first marriage, the following Negro slaves viz Amy & child, Tenah, Bella & child Febby, male slaves Jack, Kurt, Rob and Little Peter, subject to the following limitations viz should either die without issue then & in that case the said slaves as before named together with their increase to rest in the survivor [?] and I the said William Hendon, planter, as aforesaid do by virtue of these presents do for myself, my heirs, & admin & assigns covenant & agree to warrant & forever defend the said slaves to my
said children as before named, to them their heirs, their assigns forever & should I the said William die intestate the said gift as herein set forth the children aforesaid are not to have any effect on their claim to a
distribution share of any estate of which they are to have an equal share independent of the gift of slaves hereby recited, it being my object to make this extra provision in consequence of the larger part of my estate
derivable from my respective marriages ---- [illegible word] by virtue of my first marriage & that with their deceased mother. In virtue whereof I have hereunto set my hand & affixed my seal this 12th September in the year of Our Lord 1823. Signed sealed & delivered in the presence of Alexander McDowell/McDonnell [unclear surname] May Term 1824 W Hendon /s/ This deed of gift was proved in open court by Alex McDowell/McDonnell [near illegible surname] & ordered to be registered.
