Several Stone family researchers, especially my dear cousin, Sherlene Rogers Baab, have generously provided some of the information which appears on this site. Thank you!

James Stone , born c1790 in South Carolina, was the son of William Stone and Matilda (?) McClure . James married Elizabeth Guest in 1816-17 in Warren County, Tennessee. Elizabeth was the daughter of William Guest. Within two years, the Stones had two sons; Martin and William. About 1820, the family was in Alabama where James Jr., Mary Ann, Margaret, and Sarah were born by the time they departed for Arkansas in 1830. There, Greenberry, Redman, and Matilda joined the family. Always restless, James took his growing family to Barry County, Missouri in 1836-37. His last two sons; John Lock and Andrew Larkin were born there by 1841. The promise of cheap land was compelling the Stones to head for Texas! By now, the older members of the family had married and had children of their own. Martin married Nancy Burcham ; William married Elizabeth Stinnett ; James Jr. married Mary Burcham; Mary Ann married Andrew Fields Pruitt; Margaret married John B. Welch; and Sarah married Henry Bowlin Carruthers. All the new families joined James and Elizabeth for the trek to Texas in 1843. The seven families split up and settled in various counties; Fannin, Tarrant, Hunt, and Rusk. James Stone died in Hunt County in 1851. By 1860, some of his children had relocated to Comanche, Erath, Brown, and Freestone Counties. Greenberry married Sylvestra Frances Russell; Redman first married Mariah Lee McEntire, then Harriett Shrilda Sanders; Matilda first married Jonathan Willis Rhodes, then HenryT. Hill ; John Lock first married Sarah Jane Russell , then Pherba Lee; and Andrew Larkin married Elba E. Jones . After the death of his first wife, William married Malinda Ratliff. Elizabeth (Guest) Stone died at Erath County about 1861. James and Elizabeth's burial places are unknown.
