E. L. Hendon Buried Here

One of Knox City’s pioneer citizens, Mr. E.L. Hendon (Grandfather) Hendon was laid to rest in the Odd Fellows Cemetery Saturday, December the 13th.

Mr. Hendon died Friday about six p.m.  He was buried Saturday afternoon following services held in the Baptist church. Reverend Stovall was assisted in the service by Reverend J. H. Sharp.

Mr. Hendon was born in the state of Mississippi in 1859. In 1880, he was married to Miss Walker, to which this union eight children born, four of these, with Mrs. Hendon, survive the father; they are W.T. Hendon of near Odonnel; A.J. Hendon of Lorenzo; Barney Hendon of Knox City and Mrs. Hollis of Arizona. The three sons were in attendance of the last days of the father, but the daughter was unable to come.

Mr. Hendon, with his moved to Texas, McLelland County in 1889. In 1905 they moved near Childress where they stayed two years, then to Knox County. Since 1907, he has lived in Knox County. He is one of the pioneers of this area, a truly respected man, and beloved  wherever known.

At the age of sixteen Mr. Hendon was converted and joined the Methodist church. He took an active part in church  work during his earlier years. His family was members of  the Methodist Church.

At the time of his death Mr. Hendon was living at his home north of town. His absence will be ??? and the Herald joins the community in offering condolences to the bereaved family.
