Walter Maes Turnbull was born on 6 Mar 1856 in Whitchurch, SAL, ENG, (not yet indexed on FreeBMD Feb 2005, but the images for the March qtr show a Walter, reg. in what looks like ?Glendale vol 10c?, page 314), which is a tad out of the way of Shropshire.4,5,6,7

Walter Maes Turnbull was possibly 5' 8½ tall, but as all entries above his in the LNWR staff schedule had a tick, with the previous entered height being that there would seem to be a rather rigorous height requirement and uniformity.4
The census of 7 Apr 1861 showed Robert and Walter and their sisters Louisa, Ellen, Sarah and Edith in the household of their parents Robert and Louisa Philipine Turnbull in the Village, Wybunbury, CHS, ENG, enumerated as TURNBULL: Robert, head, 49 Vicar Wybunbury b Kirk on Esk, Cumberland; wife Louisa Philippine 48 b Dou?? France; Children (all scholars): Louisa Mary Ann 15; Ellen 14, both b Cambridge; Sarah 11 b Keighley, Yorkshire; Robert 9; Edith 7; Walter 5 all b Whitchurch, Shropshire.3
Walter Maes Turnbull appeared on the census of 1871 at 38 Bargate St, Whitchurch, SAL, ENG, enumerated as Walter M Turnbull, lodger, 15, scholar b Whitchurch, SAL, with Emma Edwards. 73, dressmaker b Malpass?, CHS and her unm sister Hannah Bate 61 b Hanmer ?Flintshire?11
Fr Jan 1874 - Feb 1886 Walter M Turnbull was a "Clerk, Timetable" who worked in the Cheshire Superintendents Dept of the London and North Western Railway. The pay schedule shows that he was born 6th March 1856, started work Jan 1874, was earning £100 Apr 1880; £110 Jan 1884 and £120 Jan 1885. The transfer section of the form shows he transferred in Jan 1881 "From Mr Kitchins" and Feby 1886 was transferred to Mr ?K?ow?.12,4
The census of 1881 showed Walter and his sisters Mabel and Edith in the household of his mother Louisa in Fairfield St, West Derby, LAN, ENG, enumerated as TURNBULL: Louisa R, head, annuitant, widow, 67 b Douay (BS), France; Children: Edith, daily governess 27; Walter railway clerk 25 both b Whitchurch, Shropshire; Mabel M daily governess 20 b Wybunbury, CHS; Servant Elizabeth LUICKAR 18 b West Kirby CHS.2
Walter and Rosetta Turnbull appeared on the census of 7 Apr 1891 at Holly Bank, Frodsham, CHS, ENG, as TURNBULL: Walter M, head, 35 Railway clerk, b Whitchurch, Shrophsire; wife Rosetta 34 b Liverpool, LAN; Children (both b Frodsham): Eric M 3; Douglas M under 2 mths.8
In the will of Ellen Bolton dated 15 Feb 1897 at Braeside, West Kirby, CHS, ENG, Louisa R Turnbull and Walter Turnbull were left legacies her mother Louisa, £40 and her brother Walter £30.13,14,15
The census of 1901 showed Walter with his wife Rosetta, their sons Douglas and Eric , a servant Ellen Bolton at 73 Trinity Rd, Handsworth, STS, ENG, household enumerated as TURNBULL: Walter M, head, 45 Railway Superintendent, worker, b Whitchurch, Shrophsire; wife Rosetta 44 b Liverpool, LAN; Children (both b Frodsham): Eric M 13; Douglas 10. Visitor: Kate BARTON 20, single b Colton STS. Servant Ellen Bolton 54 b CAM (Walter and Ellen are siblings, Ellen now being a widow even though she is shown as single).9
The census of 1911 showed Walter with his wife Rosetta at Tuncliffe Hailford, Chester, CHS, ENG, household enumerated as TURNBULL: Walter Maes 53 Dist Supt LNW Rly b Whitchurch, Salop; wife Rosetta 52 b Liverpool; Married 25 completed years, 3 children born alive, two still living; Servant Hannah Palin LATHAM, 32 unm b Lancs.16 Walter Maes Turnbull was a witness to the marriage of his son Douglas Maes Turnbull to Madeline Hilda Izon on 22 Jan 1914 at the Parish Ch, Hartford, Dist of Northwich, CHS, ENG.17,18
