Noah Linn Hendershot


Noah Linn Hendershot, 63, former Hagerstown City Councilman and community activist died Thursday, May 1, 2008, at Washington County Hospital. Born Nov. 17, 1944, in Hagerstown, Md., he was raised in nearby Warfordsburg, Pa. He is survived by his good friend, Patricia Hayes. He was preceded in death by his father, Noah H. “Brownie” Hendershot, and his mother, Evelyn V. Kirk Hendershot, and an infant brother. He was the third of four children. Upon graduation from Southern Fulton High School in 1962, he graduated from University of Maryland in 1966 with a bachelor’s degree in journalism. He spent most of his adult life working in marketing and public relations with organizations such as Bucknell University, the Atlanta Falcons, the U.S. Auto Club in Indianapolis, and NASCAR. He was also a founder of GATR (Great American Truck Racing). And eventually he became the director of communications at Western Maryland Hospital Center. He has always had an interest in genealogy and spent much time researching and teaching during his years living in Atlanta. He was also very involved consulting and planning regarding handicap accessibility for the 1996 Olympics in Atlanta, the Turner Field and the Georgia Dome. He was a member of the Masons for decades. He spent his last 12 years in Hagerstown where he was an active member and leader of many community organizations such as MiHi (Many Individuals Helping Individuals), the CRS (Community Rescue Service) Board, Horizon Goodwill Board, the Washington County Commission on Aging, and the Washington County Disability Advisory Committee. He also served as a Hagerstown City councilman from 2001 to 2005. One of his most notable accomplishments was in 2002 when he was awarded the Paul G. Hearne Award from the American Association of People with Disabilities in Washington, D.C. Survivors include a daughter, Pamela V. Hendershot Roberson and three grandchildren: Benjamin M. Roberson, Justin D. Roberson and Kayla A. Roberson and former spouse, Nancy K. Hendershot, all of Prattville, Ala. His siblings include: Marion Hardin and her husband, Herb, of Hagerstown, Md., and Tom Hendershot and his wife, Nancy, of Olney, Md. He also leaves three nieces, Cynthia Hardin Perini of Hagerstown, Md.; Stacy Hardin Olexy of Reading, and Beth Hendershot Riley of Grasonville, Md.; and two nephews: Brian Hardin of Playa Del Rey, Calif., and David Hendershot of Olney, Md. Services were held Tuesday, May 6 at 10 a.m. at Douglas A. Fiery Funeral Home Hagerstown, Md. Rev. John Barlow officiated. Burial was at the Warfordsburg Presbyterian Church Cemetery in Warfordsburg, following the service.
