John Sylvester "Jack" Hendershott
John Sylvester "Jack" Hendershott, 78, a retired laboratory technician for DuPont, died Thursday at the Beverly Healthcare Center in Monterey.
He was born Nov. 8, 1922 in Patterson, NJ and lived in New Jersey until moving to Deland, Fla. in 1980. Last July , he relocated to Pacific Grove to be close to family members.
A graduate of Butler High School in Butler, NJ, Mr. Hendershot retired at age 59 after working for I. E. Dupont Chemical Co. as a laboratory technician for 42 years. He also served in the Merchant Marines during World War II. He met his wife, Mary, at a USO.
He was a volunteer with the Pequannock, NJ, Fire Department for 25 years, belonged to the Elks Lodge and was a member of the Catholic Church.
Mr. Hendershott enjoyed square dancing and fishing. He was also an avid woodworker and golfer who played three times a week before moving to California.
He is survived by his wife of 54 years, Mary, a son Ron Hendershott of Pacific Grove; a daughter, Shawn Fiore of Middletown, NJ, and six grandchildren.
Private family memorial services will be held. Following cremation, his remains will be scattered at sea. The Paul Mortuary is handling the arrangements.
The family suggests that any memorial contributions be sent to the Hospice Foundation, P.O. Box 1798, Monterey 93942. The Monterey County Herald, Sunday April 15, 2001.
