Hi, Bruce. Welcome to the chat!
Bruce thanks
I'm not sure who's else is coming. Tell me a little about your Hendershot connections. You don't have to type your name. It automatically comes up for others.
Sun Mar 23 19:10:42 CST 2003] Edna: No Clan
Hi, Edna, welcome to the chat!
Bruce, just looking on to see if anything comes up. My connection is with John G. born in PA.in 1796
I think Mark Hadlund is going to join us but not sure who else. Is there any topic you would to discuss?
Sun Mar 23 19:12:38 CST 2003] Edna: No Clan
Edna's back!
Where in PA is your John G from? My Hendershot roots are in Greene County, PA.
Bruce Are there any plans on re-writing the WEH book
I don't think so. I know people have found many errors but it's still the best thing we have.
Bruce> Thats where my John was born,by the book
There is something called "connections" that our group is working on that shows how people today connect to what is in his book.
Have you ever done any research in Greene County? Who was John's father?
Bruce> Which I think is wrong
Sun Mar 23 19:15:44 CST 2003] Edna has no profile.
Edna> Is any happening?
Welcome Edna! Sorry got bumped off.
Bruce> Casper, book says maybe
Edna> What is Bruce working on?
I'm descended from Peter. Casper's brother. We are just starting Edna. And trying to find out how each of us are connected to the Hendershots
Bruce> Any Hendershot living in Pa in 1776
Edna> I trace my roots from my dad to Oman, Esquire, John of 1784.
Let's talk about brick walls that you are facing in your Hendershot research. Any brick walls?
Edna> After John of 1784 there is a lot of confusion. John died in Indiana naming wife Nancy. WEH book shows wife Catherine Bodine.
Bruce> After John G it's all a brick wall
Bruce> Mike did your Casper leave a will?
I've not researched Casper really. I'm descended from his brother Peter. I don't think I have a will for Peter.
Edna> I feel that way, also, with my John. I just need redo all the censuses now that I have proved everything forward.
Edna, is your John the father of Jacob born 1747?
Bruce> My John born 1776
Bruce> correction 1796
Edna> I am really just getting familar with the various records so I may do better now. WEH claims he's the son of Peter 1747 but there were problems with that.
Edna> Maybe it was Alfred Hendershot.
Bruce> A lot of Posiblitys
[Sun Mar 23 19:27:54 CST 2003] Mark, clan C 3: KRAM95@aol.com
Mark, clan C 3> Made it!
I've got access to a lot of Census stuff and would be intereested in helping anyone with Hendershot stuff. Welcome Mark!
Bruce and Edna, do you have access to census material?
Bruce> No
I'd be glad to look up some things for you if you want. My local lib has all the census on microfilm.
Edna> I know my Squire and I think John were in Logan County, OH in 1840 under Hendershot and Greene Co, OH in 1820 under Hindershot. I don't think I found him in 1830 or 1850.
Mark, clan C 3> I have access to records at the Council Bluffs & Omaha Public Libraries
Bruce> Thanks Mike will get back to you. I have your address
Edna> I have subcriptions on Ancestry and Geanoloogy.com so am o.k. but thanks
Edna> How do the tax roll help?
I've found the census invaluable, just let me know. I helped another Hendershot researcher this week. Dorothy Fiber in WV Hendershots.

Bruce> Unknown
I don't think tax roles help much, other than placing people in the county during that time. They at least tell you they are there.
Mark, clan C 3> Don't forget to use City Directories.
Bruce> John G married in Columbra co PA about 1830
I have used Chicago city directories around 1900 and they are good. I've not used small city directories.
Mark, clan C 3> Do you live in Chicago? I live close to Chicago in NW Indiana.
Edna> I want to thank you for last chat because I made contact with some very distance relatives on my husband's maternal side of the family on genforum. We only have 1 first cousin alive in that family.
Edna, great to make that contact. How did the chat help?
Edna> I remembered to Check message boards.
Message boards are great. Glad you were reminded to post and check them. Do you subsribe to them?
Edna> Now back to John. It would help if I could find him somewhere in Ohio or Indiana in 1850 and if I could pin down the wife's last name. Same boards, yes.
It's hard to use the board's effectively if you don't know the county he may be in. I'd think census stuff would be more effective to locate him.
Mark, clan C 3> Be careful, somebody has been using Genforum to try and scam people.
Edna> John seems to have a itchy foot. He cleared land, sold, then moved on.
Edna, what's your biggest question about John?
Edna> I'd like to determine if he married twice and how weh and alfred came up with Catherine Bodine as wife when his will in Indiana said wife Nancy? So, he died in Indiana. What county?
Edna> I have a copy of the will from Koscuiksa County, In. I may not have spelled that county correctly.
When was he born and when did he die? I'm trying to place him in my research.
Edna> I am pretty sure he was in Logan Co, Ohio in 1840. Squire married Mary Ann West in 1844 or 1845 in Clark Co. Oh and Squire was with him in 1858 when the will was witnessedd.
Edna> He was born in Pa in 1784 and died in In in 1858 I believe. It may 1859 when he died.
Sounds like your best bet is the 1850 Census. For some reason I have a John born 1720 with a wife Catherine Bodine. That's weird that you John is supposed to have married a woman by that name.
Edna> He was born 25 May 1784 in Sussex Co, NJ then moved to W. Va. (WEH Book) That's is why I don't believe it.
Good luck on it Edna. Keep digging! Did anybody else try something new from the "Doing research on the Internet" chat? Any other topics you want to talk about?
Mark, clan C 3> I've been getting my database in order. It took a while to do.
How are you getting your database in order Mark? Are you using a program?
Mark, clan C 3> Yes, I have Family Tree Maker 10 What are you doing to get it in order?
Edna> I decided I had to get some of my stuff origanized before continuing. I just upgrade to FTM 10 and still have some new features to learn.
Our local gen society just had a speaker on organizing our research. It was very helpful to me.
Mark, clan C 3> I wanted to create a master file with everyone from all the seperate trees. Then needed to delete all the duplicate sources and merge several people.
Bruce> thats my problem
That sounds like a good idea Mark, I'm sure it will help you to organize it.
Mark, clan C 3> Now I should post the new file to my website.
Edna> Where did you get the separate trees. Are other people in your family working on it too?
The speaker we had joked that we all just have just a bunch of brown bags and we throw things into them.
Mark, clan C 3> I have seperate trees for my major surnames. I think it would be good to separate the different surnames.
Mark, clan C 3> Of course it takes time when I need to make updates. The speaker taught us how to organize our notebooks. We all have notebooks of stuff but it's not organized.
Mark, clan C 3> That's what I need to do.
Bruce> MEtoo The speaker was Marilyn Shouts, the Pres of the Illinois Gen Society. She was good. I'm not sure if I can tell you on a chat how she instructed us but I'll try.
Mark, clan C 3> Due to financial problems, I've let my memberships in
the genealogy societies lapse.
She told us to organize our notebooks by using tabs.
[Sun Mar 23 20:03:46 CST 2003] Edna has no profile.
Edna> I got bumped. Has anyone encountered my problem. To have your top tab by the oldest ancestor in a particular surname. And then put all your research for that person behind that tab.
Edna> I guess I missed some of the info but I will get it when You post the chat. Then the next tab down be for the first child of that person.
Mark, clan C 3> It took me 1/2 hour to get it. I needed to reboot the computer.
Edna, I'm trying to explain how this speaker told us how to organize our notebooks. I just started.
Edna> Good, please continue
Start with a tab for the oldest ancestor in a surname. Then have the next tab be for their oldest child. And other tabs for other children. The children tabs are at the same level. Then for each generation, you move down a tab. And you put all the research for each person behind their tab.
Edna> Thats sounds really neat. Did she give you other ideas? My problem is that I had notebooks for Hendershot stuff but didn't have it divided by people. Does this make sense? It's hard to explain it on a chat.
Edna> Yes, that happened to me, too. That why I spend a week sorting.
She called our notebooks that are not divided, just like a brown bag all our stuff in them but not organized.
Edna> Your explanation was clear to me.
Mark, clan C 3> I understand it. With my Hendershot stuff. I'd start with Peter, then have a tab for his children, Then tabsf or each grandchild. I came home from the meeting and did one of my notebooks like this and it's great. Now I can find things!!!!
Edna> I tried 5 x 8" cards for that kind of system but I think this could work if I used different colors as I found it difficult to separate the generations. yes she also told us to have different colored tabs for each generation.
I forgot that. Bruce> Thanks for the information, got to go.
She also recommended doing a card system like you mentioned, but I'm not sure how to use it. How do you use the cards.
Edna> With different colored tabs for 1,2,3rd,etc I could make it workable I think. I invested a lot of time into setting up the cards but was disappointed when I couldn't find something quickly. What do you put on the cards?
Edna> Name md to name and children, census, and other sources and carry it around to library.
Edna> Usually a note parents several lines down to avoid confusion. I could see how that would be helpful. She said some libs won't allow y ou to take in Notebooks so the cards are helpful.
Edna> The name marriage date and spouses name goes on first line.
Edna> Then the birth date of both plus death date of both below their name.
Edna> Then burial cemetery. on third line
Edna> Then skip line
Edna> Father Name, gf, ggf for both
Sounds good. Any other ideas you've used to organize your stuff?
Edna> Mother maiden name
Edna> Then children
Edna> I use notebooks and I make copies of indexes for locating people by birth, death, and marriages, and cemetery record for the same surname. Having your stuff entered into a computer program like FTM, seems to be one of the best ways.
Mark, clan C 3> Yes, but I'm never quite satisfied and I keep tweaking it.
Edna> I do that too. But with a surname like Williams, and there have been as many as 400 in Knox Co over the years. the indexes really help. I can't imagine doing research without the computer.
Mark, clan C 3> I've also started to add pictures. The speaker also did tell us to add pictures in our tab section of our notebooks.
Edna> I recently found a another death notice for a Hendershot here in Knox Co. I post on the L-list so if someone is loo, king for it. they will get it.
That way it's something you can share with people and keep their interest.
Edna> I can't either. It was have been very expensive and time consuming to work without a CP
Mark, clan C 3> There are lots of unidentified pictures. She said, "How many of you have read a good "file" lately? Answer no one. But how many have read a good book and people can relate. She encouraged us to make our notebooks more like books for people to read.
Edna> Yes, I have pictures not identified. I wish I could talk to my parents but they both died young. I've found with pictures that the more I know about the family, the more unidentiified photo's I have clues about.
Edna> That sound excellent about the notebooks.
Mark, clan C 3> I started when most of my older relatives had died.
Edna> There was an article on ancestry.ccom about dating picutes. I did too.
I had a real break through by posting a picture of my Lewis line on a county board. A "cousin" saw it and had other pictures that helped me identify people in mine!
Mark, clan C 3> Family Chronicle Magazine offers a book to help date photos. I need to get one.
Edna> My husband was a late birth (mother in her 40s) so we have very few people to check facts with. Fortunely several people attempted to keep records and charts but the charts had no dates.
I did get the book you mentioned from Family Chronicle on photo's for Christmas. It's always good to ask for stuff like this then!
Mark, clan C 3> My grandmother tried to get me interested when I was younger, but didn't get the bug until a few years ago.
It's a good book and helps you date pictures by comparing dress styles.
Edna> It is exciting learning about relatives even if I didn't know them. Even the bad one.
Mark, clan C 3> Yes, I recently found a naughty boy in my research. Mark, clan C 3> He was arrested for forgery.
Especially the bad one's. They generate information! Newpaper articles, court records, etc.
Edna> The relatives I connected with has already sent me info and I had copies of her grandfather Bible papes and she has tin-photos that go way back. I anxious to see them.
Mark, clan C 3> Also people who had unusal deaths.
Mark, clan C 3> Also people who had unusal deaths.
Mark, clan C 3> There was one person who died a month before anyone found her.
Edna> Yes, I had an Uncle who hanged himself. That happened when I was in grade school and my dad would n ot let us read the paper. Now I have the articles. That makes me think of a photo in that book about photo's. It had a family photo of a a group and the father was dead in the photo! They just put him in with them to get a "last" family photo of everybody.
Mark, clan C 3> Wierd
Edna> The death certificate said sucpious suicide. It was weird but it 's true. He looked kind of stiff!!!!!
Edna> Your right! That is wierd.
Mark, clan C 3> I believe you, but it still is wierd.
Edna> Mike, are you kidding us?
No, I"m not kidding!!!! He was sitting in a chair(maybe tied in!)
Edna> It's not funny but I laughing so hard just thinking about it I can hardly type. It is funny! And sad too.
Edna> Yes, it is sad.
Mark, clan C 3> Quite. But at least they didin't miss that last family photo!!!! I've got to go. I've enjoyed chatting with you both!!!! See you a couple weeks!
Edna> Yes, I need to leave too. Thanks.
Mark, clan C 3> Are you going to log the chat?
Mark, I did log this and will post it, since you couldn't make it in.
Mark, clan C 3> Thanks.
Mark, clan C 3> See you soon.
See you later!!!!!! And good luck in your organizing of your stuff. Thanks!
Mark, clan C 3> You're welcome.
