This is the text from our Chat on Jan. 26, 2003
The following Hendershot Reseachers were a part of this chat:
Mark Hadlund-KRAM95
Karen Gaughan-Pahendrsht
Annette Schaumann-Anet6334
Stan Hendershot-genesearcher4
Mike Sutton- valposutton
valposutton: I'm from Clan C too. Also C3. Glad you are here Stan!
Anet6334: Karen is back online, but not in the chat room
genesearcher4: It is good to be here and make the connection
valposutton: Mark, I just saw that Karen in back on. I"m not sure how
you invite her to join?
KRAM95: I'll take care of it.
Anet6334: Looks like Clan C is well represented!
Anet6334: Can you all trace your lines back to John 1720?
KRAM95: Welcome Karen
Pahendrsht: Thanks. Hello Hendershot Researchers!
valposutton: I'm lucky and I think I can trace my line back. Welcome Karen,
glad you made it!
KRAM95: Yes, my closest Hendershot is Sarah Elizabeth Hendershot, although
we knew her as Minnie.
Pahendrsht: Thanks, I can take something so simple on the puter and make it
sooo difficult. Sorry!
valposutton: Mark, I don't have you listed on Clan C. How do you connect.
I'm C3 too and would be interested to see if we are close.
Pahendrsht: What have you been talking about?
KRAM95: Just introduceing ourselves.
Pahendrsht: I know everyone except genesearcher4 and I know I have seen your
name before
KRAM95: I can't think of it off the top of my head, but my line is on my
website.
genesearcher4: My line goes: Stan (me), Royal Clark, Andrew J, Harvey L,
Harvey M, David, Jacob, John George, and Michael. I guess the main question
is about the connection between John and Jacob but it seems pretty well
accepted.
valposutton: Mark, what is your webpage address? I'd like to list it on the
HR site if that's OK?
KRAM95: brb
Pahendrsht: Where is Barb tonight Annette do you know?
KRAM95: OK, but there is not much Hendershot info on it.
Anet6334: I don't know where Barbara is
valposutton: Every little bit helps and it may help others see how you
connect and contact you.
KRAM95: Its: http://familytreemaker.genealogy.com/users/h/a/d/Mark-A-Hadlund
genesearcher4: My Ellis line is doing the dna testing. It sounds like there
have been some pretty impressive results in those families that have had good
participation in the project!
Pahendrsht: Mark are yu logging this chat?
KRAM95: I can send you a link via email later.
KRAM95: Yes
Pahendrsht: What is the dna testing?
KRAM95: I don't know about having my DNA tested.
genesearcher4: Mark Thanks for the site I will make sure I have checked it
out as well.
Pahendrsht: Well lets get started with a few things OK
KRAM95: Sure. Lets call the meeting to order.
genesearcher4: I don't know much about the DNA thing either. But they say
that it is used only for genealogical purposes and it basically helps prove
descendency lines.
Pahendrsht: First of all I would like to tell you all that since the reunion
in Sept we have had some major accomplishments.
Pahendrsht: Mark has taken over the chat room and is doing a fine job. Now
all we need to do is get more people here. If you have any
Pahendrsht: suggestions please tell us.
KRAM95: Yeah, not holding it during the Superbowl. :-)
Pahendrsht: Also, Mike has put up the Hendershot Web Page! It has been
quite a project for him and he has done a remarkable job. Have yu all been
there?
KRAM95: Mike has a chat room on his website, and Rick Hendershot has one for
us to use as well.
genesearcher4: Yes! It is great!
KRAM95: Mike, would you mind if I link my site to yours?
Anet6334: Yes, and I think the webpage is going to be a real help with folks
research
valposutton: Mark had suggested to put a chat room on the HR site and it was
easier than I thought. Please link the site to anything you want!
Pahendrsht: Have you fellas decided which chat room you wish to use? What
do you think is more simple for non Aol people to access?
Anet6334: I think this one tonight is working well. Can non AOL users access
this type?
valposutton: I would like to recommend we use the HR site chat room in the
future. It doesn't require people to get a Instant messanger acct first.
They'd just go to the site.
genesearcher4: I like the live interaction.. Do other sites offer this?
KRAM95: Non AOL users can use this method if they download AIM
Pahendrsht: Do we have to pay extra for the Im account?
KRAM95: No
Anet6334: Trying that sounds good to me
valposutton: The more we use the site for our things but more effective it
will. Karen and I got on the HR Chat thing earlier and it works just like
this.
Anet6334: Could a clan group make use of it for a chat?
Pahendrsht: Yes I tend to agree that we should keep the chat on the
Hendershot Researchers Web Page That way all will get used to going there and
checking it out more often.
valposutton: Yes, you could set up any type of group chat. We might want to
try the HR site later to make sure it works this good.
KRAM95: Yes, anyone with any ISP can use it so everyone can join in the fun.
I just don't know if I can log it.
genesearcher4: Sounds good to me
valposutton: What does logging it mean?
KRAM95: It means being able to save it.
Anet6334: If you can't log it, can we cut and paste it in to a word
processor and put it on the webpage?
valposutton: If you can cut and paste it, I can post it.
Pahendrsht: Then you can send it to those who missed the chat if they
request it or those who were here and would like a record.
KRAM95: I'll see what the program can do.
valposutton: I could create a page on the HR site with the logged results.
That's a good idea. I"m new to this chat thing.
Pahendrsht: I would really like to PUSH the HENDERSHOT RESEARCHERS WEB SITE.
ANY SUGGESTIONS
Pahendrsht: ON WHAT we can do to help it along?
valposutton: I need material to post. The more we put there the better. It
needs to be come the place people come for Hendershot stuff.
KRAM95: Messages should be put on as many message boards as possible.
Pahendrsht: I think it is a good thing to do but I also would like it to be
up on the site temporarily so as not to take space we can use there.
genesearcher4: I think if you keep doing what you are it will evolve just
fine. A lot of links, telling our families and posting things that will be
of interest
Pahendrsht: How many hits did we have yesterday Mike do you know?
valposutton: I don't think there is a space limit, if it's genealogy stuff.
Anet6334: I tried a cut and paste and its works, however I notice I've
already lost the first part of this chat.
KRAM95: Perhaps there should be a mass mailing to every member with an email
address.
genesearcher4: And/or a notice in the newsletter!
KRAM95: And mention it in every issue of the newsletter
valposutton: We had 19 hits yesterday and 15 today. We've had 335 in the
last month. It does not count me when I log on to change things.
Anet6334: The newsletter is ready to be copied tomorrow. THere is a list of
all the e-mail addresses I have in it.
valposutton: You have to ask, Why would people want to visit the site? And
then creat thos thing on it. Long term, I'd like to see WH's book on it!
KRAM95: With my health problems, I let my subscription lapse. I'll renew as
soon as I can.
Anet6334: Glad to hear that Mark...I'll send you this issue
Pahendrsht: Are people sending you information to put up on the site Mike?
genesearcher4: Maybe WH's book can be posted through the FTM update that is
being worked on.?
KRAM95: I might not do it next month, my budget is extremely tight at the
moment.
Pahendrsht: Has anyone submitted Obits Marriages, or other
genesearcher4: I plan to submit some obits/pictures as I have time
valposutton: I've gotten a few things but not much. Annette sent me some
photo's and that helped.
KRAM95: I can send a few photos of nonliving relatives and ask the living
ones if they want to be included.
Anet6334: I've got lots more stuff of Frank's, but it will take time to get
it all together.
Pahendrsht: Mike, may I ask you to write a letter telling about the Web Site
and what is available, possibly available and what you would like from us as
far as info and how to submit it to you,
Anet6334: I've started on the NJ records
Pahendrsht: then we can work on getting it out to as many lists and people
as we can?
valposutton: I understand and know will take time. Where would you send the
letter?
valposutton: I'm sure the announcement in the Newsletter will help get the
word out too.
KRAM95: Why not write an article to be included?
genesearcher4: As an aside on the newsletter -- are back copies still
available on disc?
Pahendrsht: For starters to the Hendershot-L@rootsweb, also the Hendershot
sites that we know of, and to all the Hendershots on the Newsletter list plus
all those email addys that we have
valposutton: Annette's already got something in the newsletter, that I
wrote. It will ask for people to submit material to me.
Pahendrsht: combined. People we know are interested in the Hendershots
Anet6334: Someone could e-mail all the members with an e-mail address.
Something could be sent to Rootsweb and GenForum. Mike sent me info for
newsletter and there is short article in the current one
KRAM95: Ah
valposutton: I have posted a message at Rootsweb's message board and at
Genforum's message board. I've also sent stuff to them when I've added
things. LIke the photo's form Annette. I think that created traffic.
Pahendrsht: While I am thinking about it. I lost all my Websites when my
Anet6334: Sounds like Mike is ahead of us!
valposutton: I'm learning but I'm sure there are other places to post the
address.
Anet6334: How about an article in the May newsletter with all the known
websites with Hendershot information
Pahendrsht: puter went down last month. Can you all please send me any and
all links to Rootsweb and GenForum plus any other Hendershot Boards that you
know of!!!! Please!!!!!
KRAM95: Will do.
valposutton: I've posted all the sites with Hendershot stuff that I know of
on the HR site.
Pahendrsht: Ok will you all just send me an email with some site you have in
your favorite places regarding Hendershots...
genesearcher4: All of us who have genealogy home pages should include a link
to the site as well!
valposutton: Yes! I've posted Stan's World Connect site too. That was great!
Pahendrsht: I did have several message boards. I think one was on Rootsweb
one on GenForum, and several others that I cant
Pahendrsht: rmember
valposutton: How often does the group do chats? Is there a schedule?
genesearcher4: My reference was to having link to the HR site as well as
lising our sites on the HR page.
Pahendrsht: We are also working on trying to get permission to print the Wm
E book. We are not having good luck with the current situation.
KRAM95: We are trying to do them twice a month, on the second and fourth
Sunday of the month, except during Christmas.
valposutton: Stan, do you have a site other than your World Connect site?
Pahendrsht: Do we have that in the newsletter when the chats are? I believe
we were planning on the first and 3rd or 2nd and 4th Sun of each month.
Unless you want only one a month
genesearcher4: I did a posting on genealogy.com once, but it is more
outdated and has nothing more than the world connect
valposutton: I think twice a month is good. If we do it at the HR site, it
should easier for people to find and use and could really help our
connection. This is great.
Pahendrsht: Ok so the Chat will be on the 2nd and 4th Sun nite of each month
unless otherwise announced at 8:00 EST. Correct?
KRAM95: Yes.
genesearcher4: Sounds good!
valposutton: Are we doing it at the HR site?
KRAM95: I think it would be the best idea.
Anet6334: I think primary records and corrected information from WEH is more
important than the original book with all its errors. Chat times are in the
newsletter, but not where to go
Pahendrsht: So our goal for the next several months is to increase the hits
Pahendrsht: on the web site and the people attending the chat rooms.
valposutton: Sounds like a plan:)
Pahendrsht: You know the chat room can be used for individual clan meetings,
group clan meetings with the co-ordinator,
Anet6334: If we have a large number at a chat we may need a subject for the
evening plus a question and answer time.
Pahendrsht: Officers meetings, just about any kind of meeting we would want
to call re Hendershot.
Pahendrsht: Yes, I do agree that we need to organize the chats so they are
worth attending. We need to announce subjects, have guests to
KRAM95: brb, need a break
Pahendrsht: answer questions etc.
valposutton: You could have a topic like "Research in Indiana",
etc.
Pahendrsht: So cousins, please invite everyone you know to the Web site and
the chat.
Pahendrsht: Every Hendershot relation that is
Pahendrsht: Annette and Mike do you each have a list of what is availa le
for
Pahendrsht: sale on disk from Lorraine?
Anet6334: No, I don't.
Anet6334: It must be superbowl time
Pahendrsht: I do think we need a way for the organization to also make some
money on the sale of disks. Future ones that is. I think we need to
brainstorm that also.
genesearcher4: I have already sent a link to the HR site to all my relatives
I know who are on-line
Anet6334: I think Lorraine is still using floppies and it would be good to
go to CDs
Pahendrsht: Oh yes, sorry about that.
Anet6334: I work on a list of what she has for the may issue of the
newsletter.
KRAM95: I'm back, needed to clean out the tube in my trachea.
KRAM95: Welcome back, Mike.
valposutton: My internet stopped on me for a minute!
Pahendrsht: Well cousins, Im sorry but I must leave soon. I have a Super
Bowl Party here and people are calling me. Is there more to
valposutton: Before we finish tonight can we all try to go to the HR site
and try the chat there? I want to make sure it will work for everyone.
Pahendrsht: talk about. You can all stay after I leave of course
Anet6334: I'm willing to try
Pahendrsht: Ok shall we all try
genesearcher4: I'll give it a go.
Anet6334: Tells us when to go to the site and how to access the chat room
KRAM95: I'm game
valposutton: If we do it, you need to go to the site and then go to the box
at the bottom that says Chat now.
Pahendrsht: Stay on here just click it to the bottom till we see if we make
it on there. Tell us what to do Mike.
Pahendrsht: Ok lets go!!!
valposutton: The site address is
http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~hendershot/index.html
valposutton: Karen and I have made it to the HR site chat. Do the other of
you need help?
genesearcher4: I made it to the site but the applet has not appeared to
allow me to enter.
Pahendrsht: Are you having trouble?
valposutton: Stan, give it some time to load the applet.
Pahendrsht: Mike and I are there
Pahendrsht: You need to wait a few minutes for it to load then put your name
in and click on the box
Pahendrsht: Then type a message and hit enter
KRAM95: Well, goodbye everyone and see you in two weeks.
Mike- Mark too!, now we only need Stan!
KRAM95- Hello
anet- Hi again.
[Sun Jan 26 19:54:25 CST 2003] Genesearcher4 has no profile.
KRAM95- He's here!
Mike- We made it. I'm surprised!
Genesearcher4- I guess it is working on this end.
Mike- Stan, you made it. Great!
KRAM95- It works great
anet- How do you get your name to appear at the beginning of your
message? Do you need type it?
Genesearcher4- Yes! It is nice. Tonight is my first chat room
experiece(s).
Mike- That was easier than I thought. This seems to be a simple chat
room but it works.
Mike- I think your name appears only to others. I see your name on
your comments. But I don't see my name on mine.
[Sun Jan 26 19:57:18 CST 2003] Karen has no profile.
anet- Thanks now I get it.
Karen- Wow we all made it. What did I miss. I went back to other site
to try to help and then could not get back on here
Mike- Any suggestions on how to help people find the chat thing on the
site? I could move the icon up somewhere if we are going to use it.
Genesearcher4- Moving the icon could help. I had trouble spotting it at
first.
KRAM95- We could send messages to the mailing list we belong to where we
know Hendershot relations are.
Karen- Moving the icon is a good idea. For a while I could not find it. I
needed to scroll down and find it.
Mike- I'll figure out a way to make it easier to find. I think messages to
message boards is a good idea.
Genesearcher4- One of the differnces with this chat room is that you
all have to know when to log on. It doesn't show who is on-line or not.
Karen- I think it does. On the right side, correct?
KRAM95- Yes
anet- That's how the aol chatrooms used to work. You sent up a time
for people to go to one.
Mike- I'd suggest to use both the AIM thing to identify if others are
online.
Genesearcher4- Maybe it does show who is on line as well as who is
logged in.
Karen- Ok Mark will you write a message about the chats, when,
where and how to access them then send me a copy?
KRAM95- Sure.
Karen- Mike will you write one about the Web site. Where, what, etc.
What you would like on it?
Mike- Mark can you log this ? I know that was an issue before.
Karen- I will work on some lists and see what I can get together
Mike- Sure, I can write you a letter about it! The more ways we
communicate the better!
Karen- Meanwhile if you all will send me some sites addys and
message board addys
KRAM95- I don't know.I need to check the Help menu to find out.
Mike- This will help in promoting the site. Because people will come
here and see everything else. Thanks!
KRAM95- I didn't see anything about it.
Karen- Oh yes, when we were chatting I did see that other Hendrshot
Researchers were on AOL. I have them
Karen- in my buddy list. When I was heading up chat I would go out
and email or IM them and invite them to join us
Karen- right then and there.
Mike- What other Hendershot Researchers?
Karen- In order to do that you must have the list in your Buddy list.
Mike- Oh, I understand, you mean others that you have on your Buddy
list.
Mike- I'd liket to create a list on the HR site of all the Buddy names we
have, if people want to post theirs.
Genesearcher4- Speaking of that. Is there a way we can share and
expand our buddy lists for those who don't mind?
[Sun Jan 26 20:07:02 CST 2003] Karen has no profile.
Karen- Mariesorge is online, BPerks is online and Deescrawl is online
I have them listed as Hendershot Researchers. Wasnt
Mariesorge to be here?
Are you still here guys?
Genesearcher4- Yes
anet- There are about 50 listed in the newsletter with e-mail
addresses....not all aol.
KRAM95- Yes, I'm still here
Mike-Yes, I don't have any other buddy names but Mark had listed
several that were supposed to be here but arentt
Karen- I will copy my list and send them to you all. If you could get
Mariesorge by email
anet- I think some that Karen has are not members of the researchers.
Mike-We need to make the HR site the place to keep all these names
in one place. Email addresses and Buddy names.
Karen- Ah its too late now but for future note
KRAM95-Edna & Ottie said they were going to be here but couldn't make it.
Karen-Yes they are researchers but not members
Well I must leave. Thanks for your wonderful help. Cant wait
for the newsletter Annette
Mike- I'd like to ask about a couple other things that I'd like to post? Do
you have any info about the next reunion.
Karen- Great Chat, welcome Stan, Thanks Mike and Mark
anet-Good to be in touch. Good Night for now, Annette
Genesearcher4- Thanks for the welcome. I look forward to future
chats.
Karen- Weare having a mini reunion in Rochester next Sept and then
one the Sept after that
Mike- I also wonder if any body took pictures at the reunion. I could
post some of them.
KRAM95- Yes, and more people can join in on the fun
Karen- in Rochester. Marilyn Monroe has the dates in her notes.
Mike-Just send me the details as you have them. Great chat!
Genesearcher4- Pictures would be great! Are invitations limited to the
Sep. reunion?
Karen- Please send me acopy of the log Mark. Good night Alll and
thanks.
KRAM95- I would like to thank everyone who could make it.
Mike- Stan, I'm sure the reunion is open to you. I went to the one this
last fall and it was great.
Mike- Thanks Mark for hosting it!!
Genesearcher4- I wanted to make it, and bring an aunt, but my plate
was too full.
Genesearcher4- My thanksand blessings to all.
KRAM95- I guess its time to end the meeting.
Mike- Thanks!
Genesearcher4- Probably. We have 3 college students from West
Africa staying here who have been deprived of the phone all this time.
KRAM95- The next one is planned for Feb. 9 @ 8:00 EST.
Genesearcher4- Thanks! Talk to ya then.
KRAM95- Bye
