NOTES

1. Conforming to Gerald's book, this is the Geo Helms to Mary Margaret Fortenbury marriage. The marriage place was probably in NC, when the children started to arrive.
2. As is well known,  the names of German Immigrates were often misspelled, and Falkenburg is no exception.  In the case of Henry Falkenburg (sp Valchenburgh) there is an item in Land Records of Cecil Co MD No 3, (1715-1722) which states:
"Lease - Ephram Augustine Herman to Clement Barkston land part of Bohemia Manor, opposite the lands of Hugh Watson and William Barkaton and by land formerly held by Henry Valchenburgh, Lease is for 3 natural lives of Clemet Barkston and his wife Catherine and Catherine Dare, eldest dau. of Wm Dare, Jr.  Rents of one pound 10 shillings and two dunghill fowls to be paid on  23 Nov, yearly. Made 6 Dec 1726. Witness Elizabeth Collyer, Jophn Hollet, Rec 30 June 1719 S; Knight, Clerk.

3. The numbers in the Lancaster, SC census list tell of the family composition by sex and age. The last two zeros tell of the number of slaves-like none. The 024 is the page number. I forget the order and exact ages but it is M, F, adults, then M, F children. Looks like they all had excess (13) grown daughters or aunts etc., and a number of sons. I see 55 people altogether in SC 1790. That's quite a family group. Their presence in SC may say they had escaped Helms Marriages in NC , (with the exception of Mary Margaret). It also says the Helms stuck with NC for the moment. I don't know where and when that shift for some to the Fortenburg/berry spellings began. That centers in Mississippi, as I recall.

4. The 1790 Census data is: "Free White Males", 10 and under, 11-15, 16-20, 21-45, 46 plus, - "Free White Females" 10 and under 11-15, 16-20, 21-45, 46 plus, - (free negros/indians 1 digit) (total number in household), -(Slaves 1 or 2 digits) (total number in household.

5. The 1800 Census data is: "Free White Males", Under 10, 10-16, 16-26, 26-45, 45 and over,, "Free White Females", Under 10, 10-16, 16-26, 26-45, 45 and over, "All other free persons except Indians", Slaves

6. The earliest known: follower of William the Conquerer in England was Franco de Fauquembergues (from Fauquembergues, Flanders near St Omer, meaning Mount of the Falcons) family - Counts of St Omer. Later de Fauconberg, Lords of Rise and Catfoss in Holderness Yorkshire from 11th century. Franco was a Dane His origin was probably Denmark. The source is Valerie Currer,17 Mar 05 in Wikpedia.

7. Lamberts parents were Lambert Dryeskens Van Valkenburg and Maria in Millen Belgium. For details see Van Valkenburg Family in COlonial America in Olive Tree Genealogies.com. See also notes in the table of origins in the summary section.

The dates are of interest to us.

A Franco is not listed, but he was that earliest known baron at Ryse (Rise), Yorkshire. Perhaps the Baron was not taxed, as he was the one collecting the taxes in his area.
