WELCOME

TO MY
BRICK WALL

My great-grandfather, John MACDONALD, is the one.
Or is it: John MCDONALD ???

He should be easy to find, right...since every Scottish family has one!

Where, oh where, were you born John? And who was your family?

Can anyone out there help me find you?

WHAT I DO KNOW

1.  According to the 1900 U. S. federal census, John, a naturalized citizen, was born May, 1847 in Scotland.  He had been in the U.S. for 17 years.

2.  John was married on 5 October, 1874 in Sherbrooke, Quebec, Canada to Agnes Irving.  Witnesses to the marriage were a Donald MacDonald and a Mary Irving.

They lived in Scotstown, Sherbrooke county, Quebec and had the following children:

Mary Ann MacDonald, born 19 June 1877
John Archibald MacDonald, born 11 Nov 1879
Jessie MacDonald, born 9 October 1881

3. A 1887 census for Washington State shows the family in Sprague, Lincoln county, Washington.  The name has been changed to McDONALD.

4.  On 23 January, 1892 another son, William James, is born to John and Agnes at Sprague, WA.  He is later killed in WWI at Argonne Forest, 4/12 October 1918.

5.  On June 2, 1900 in Sprague, Lincoln, Washington, John is killed in a terrible accident when he drives his wagon into the path of an oncoming train.

THE DEAD ENDS

1.  I cannot find a record of John's naturalization papers.

2.  There is no death certificate recorded for John.  His obituary gives no information as to family or place of birth.

3.  His probate record lists only immediate family members.

4.  There are no recorded birth records for his children.

If anyone recognizes this family or has any advice for me as to how I can further my search, I would love to hear from you.  Thanks, Judi.
