DID YOU WRITE TO CARL ALBERT ???

If you did ... you "done good!" .... Tri-State Trader published
the following LETTER FROM THE SPEAKER [Carl Albert, the
Speaker's Rooms, U.S. House of Representatives, Wash., D.C.]

Dear Friend: Thank you for your recent communication expressing
your concern over HR 2556, a bill that would provide for a mid-
decade sample census as well as have the effect of denying
qualified genealogists and researchers access to information
accumulated by the Bureau of the Census.

I have been in close contact with Representative Patricia
Schroeder, Chairwoman of the Post Office and Civil Service
Subcommittee on Census and Population, and she has agreed not to
report any bill that would close any census records. She has
promised me that such language will not appear in any bill ap-
proved by her Subcommittee. Any backers of such legislation
would have a hard time passing it against my will. The National
Archivist, the official who maintains jurisdiction over old
records, believes that I am justified in my struggle to open the
census records after a reasonable time.

I share your concern, and assure you that I am doing everything
I can to help in this matter.

EARLY VIRGINIA RECORDS The following Wills and Administra-
from ISLE OF WIGHT CO. tions abstracts were taken from a
                                 recently re-printed book: Wills &
Administrations of Isle of Wight County, Virginia (1647-1800) by
Blanche Adams Chapman Reprinted in an Improved Format with a
Consolidated Index by Jessica Budick and Anita Comtois. Published
by The Genealogical Publishing Co., Inc., Baltimore, 1975.

The HEDGPETH references have been printed in the Newsletter before.
but there are further details here which might be enlightening.
Of particular interest are the associated names .... many of which
are carried as given names for subsequent HEDGPETH generations:

1748 - [Earliest mention of a HEDGEPETH in this book]

JONES, Thomas: Of the Parish of Newport. Leg. son
                   Thomas; son William; daughter Mary Inglish;
daughter ANN JOHNSON, the estate, which I have
                   brought to my son-in-law, Abraham Johnson;
                   daughter Catherine Griffin; daughter SARAH
JOHNSON; daughter MARTHA JOHNSON; son Philip.

Exec, son Philip Jones. D. Nov. 15, 1748
                                           R. March 1, 1749
Wit: JOHN DARDEN, JAMES JOHNSON, HENRY HEDGEPATH

NOTES: This record sets a possible area for future search in
Newport Parish registers ... are there any extent ???

JONES-JOHNSON-HEDGPETH connections are obvious ... This
book takes the JONES back to 1651 ... will report when
            we get them sorted out!

HENRY HEDGEPATH, mentioned as a witness here, is possibly
the same Henry who died 1779 ... ??????

Was he perhaps the same Henry who sold land in neighbor-
ing Nansemond County to Edward Hare in 1717 ??? And
again to Edward Hare in 1733, land in Chowan Co., N.C.?

Did this same Henry finally settle in Isle of Wight?

In 1748 - HENRY HEDGEPETH of Isle of Wight paid in Nanse-
mond Co. to John & Margaret Woodard of Edge-
combe Co., NC for land in Nansemond.

Living in Isle of Wight Co., why would he
buy Nansemond County land? Was it that he
lived where the two counties joined?

     (Continued notes on Henry Hedgpeth)

Assuming that Henry was an adult, age at least 20 in the
1717 reference ... and knowing he died in 1779 ... he would
have had to live to the age of 89 ... possible, but rare in
          those days.

Who was MARY HEDGPETH, left behind in Nansemond County in
1775 to the care of C. Johnson ... and whose nursing and
burying was done in 1778 by Edward Brewer? Was she Henry's
          mother?

ther Benjamin; daughter PRISCILLA HEDGEPETH; daughter

beth Parker; grandson John Daughtry, Jr. Ex., grandson

NOTES: PRISCILLA (Daugherty) HEDGPETH .... James Henry Hedgpeth,
jr. named a daughter "Percilia". She was born
1851 and died 1859 in Nodaway County, Missouri.
"Percilia" was the fourth daughter ... others
were named for grandmothers ... might there still
have been memory of Priscilla Daugherty remaining?

MARY (Daugherty) HOLLAND ... almost every generation of
this branch of the Hedgpeth family carries a son
                    named "Holland".

ROBERT WHITFIELD ... an Efrica Hedgpeth, daughter of
Sarah Hedgpeth (will 1780) was married to a
                    Whitfield.

CHARLES DARDEN ... a John Darden witnessed the above
mentioned Sarah Hedgpeth will. Dardens are
linked with Hedgpeths throughout this period in
                    Isle of Wight county.

DAUGHERTYs were in Isle of Wight before HEDGPETHS came. Isle of
Wight was an original Shire formed in 1634. The earliest mention
of Daughery in wills & administrations was in 1726 when the will
of HODGES COUNCIL was witnessed by William & John Daugherty.

NOTES: Because of the strange appellation of "Frizzel"
given one of these sons .... perhaps we can deduce that
             Sarah Hedgepeth was a "Frizzell"

The Frizzell family is mentioned as early as 1686 in Isle
of Wight records .. William Frizzell's will in 1706
describes him as a planter. The will mentions 100 acres
"near the courthouse". Mathew Whitfield is one of the
             witnesses.

     NOW ABOUT LEMUEL:

It is already rather apparent that Lemuel Hedgpeth was among
the elder sons of Henry Hedgepeth who died in 1779 in Isle of
     Wight County.

Henry Hedgpeth moved from Nansemond County in 1733 or thereabout
... may have spent some time in North Carolina, but finally set-
tled down in Isle of Wight County by 1748.

The date of Lemuel Hedgpeth's birth is estimated to be c1757.
... if he were one of Henry' s older sons .... these dates do
not quite "jel". Can anyone help with my thinking?

Could it be that there are two Henrys here?

There is a Henry among Sarah's heirs .... she died 1773.
Might she have been Lemuel's grandmother and the widow of
     Henry #1 ???

Would you experts out there put this idea in the mixer ...?
Let us know what you think ....

Another brainstorm ... it occured to me that Lemuel as one of
the elder sons might have been named for his mother's parent.
What other Lemuels were there? Not many.

LEMUEL COUNCIL - Appraised Wm. Flemying estate with Joshua Council
and Joseph Duck in 1784 ... [Note: this book indicates that
the name Duck was originally "Duke".]
Lemuel Council was leg. son of Joshua Council in 1793 will
wit: Elijah Johnson, Dempsey Johnson & Matthew Vaughan.
Lemuel Council's will 1790. Of Newport Parish. Leg. wife
               Sarah: son James; son John. dau-in-law Elizabeth Jones;
son-in-law William Jones. Wit: Elijah Johnson & others.

LEMUEL GODWIN [Goodwin] - Legatee of Joshua Godwin 1743 - He died
in 1757 .... no familiar names associated with this Lemuel
excepting he was witness to a will of Richard Wilkinson
of Newport Parish in which many relationships between
Pedens, Holladays, Bagnalls & Godwins are described in 1742.

LEMUEL HOLLADAY - in will of Anthony Holladay as a son. Lemuel
was deceased at time of this will. Anthony (the father) died
           in 1718.

LEMUEL HOLLAND - died December 1778. Account estate examined
by John Darden and Mills Lawrence. Signed, Francis Vaughan.

LEMUEL JOHNSON - son of Lazarus Johnson. He was bequeathed land
adjoining John Duck, jr. and Godwin Council. Lazarus' will
abounds with familiar Johnson names. He died in 1798.

Lemuel Johnson did not die in this book ... records cease 1800.

                         ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

So .... nothing conclusive about the name Lemuel!

Are there any other lines of thought we might pursue in this book?

Please advise if you know of any other published records we might
obtain .... Am I correct in remembering that Nansemond County
records were burned? This area seems to be the key to the earliest
     HEDGPETHS .....

Would someone please send in an analysis of what is to be found
in early Henrico & Goochland Counties where the HUDSPETHs first
appeared ..... earlier still than the Nansemond Co. area.

The brother-stowaways legend persists .... our new information
from Val Hedgpeth who hails from North Carolina has the same story.
Val hasn't had contact with any other lines of the family yet
he says this tradition exists in his family. The only difference
is that their story claims five brothers.

If they were, indeed, fugitives ... perhaps we can find a clue in
court records of Corbridge, Newcastle on Tyne .... or somewhere?
Are such records available in England?

IMPORTANT ! Val & Charlotte will be traveling throughout the
country .... through the southern states & Washing-
ton, D.C. They would appreciate any suggestions as to which
places they might search for records. Here is a golden opportun-
ity! Please you-all, any suggestions? I can't promise to catch
up with them, but will send mail to their Connecticut home with
hopes that it can be relayed to them .... to wherever they might
     be!
                    +++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

Without a doubt, Val's GEORGE WASHINGTON HEDGPETH is the son of
JESSE and PENINAH (Laurence) HEDGPETH [Vol I p.68 & 69]; Jesse
was s/o ABRAHAM & ELIZABETH (Webb) HEDGPETH; Abraham was b.1761
in Nansemond Co., Va. [RW Pens. Vol I, p.52] Knowing Abraham's
parentage would resolve some of our puzzlements!

CORBRIDGE COMMENTS Taken from Anna Ford's Volume I of
THROUGH THE YEARS WITH THE HUDSPETHS p.3

Craster, H.H.E. History of Northumberland, on page 134 extracts
from Corbridge Court Rolls, 1675. "We find that William Hudspeth
dyed seased of certayne lands in Corbridge of the yerely free rent
of seven Shillings, and that Roger Hudspeth is brother and next
     heirs to William Hudspeth, deceased."

William Humphries arrived in Henrico County,
Virginia in 1679. He married Mary Maxey in England. He was
alive in 1683 and died before 1687. His will was probated 1687.
His grand-daughter Margaret Eyers married RALPH HUDSPETH in 1689.
The marriage was solemnized at St. John's church in Henrico Co.,
Virginia. These records have been preserved with the Parish Re-
cords of St. John's church in Henrico county, and also in Henrico
county Miscellaneous Court Records - volume II - 1650.

Here it is again !... Ann Theg Brown has previously cited this
incident as a possible link between Corbridge and America:

(English Records page 135) Cuthbert Nicholson, John Henderson,
Ralph Hudspeth, widow Allgood, Reginald Ridley, Abraham Faucett,
Lowrance Jopling, Cuthbert Hudspeth, who ought to repair a bridge
called Lynell Bridge and for suffering it to be out of repair,
     are therefore fined 4 s.

FAMILY ALBUM Two picture pages this month .... one page will
complete the Rev. Thomas Riley Hedgpeth record.
Dr. Joel Hedgpeth sent a photograph of Rev. Thomas
taken in his maturity ... and repeating the "mystery girls"
photograph which turned out to be Mrs. Rev. Thomas Hedgpeth with
two of their daughters, Mary (Ash) and Vannie (Jacks).

The other couple .... WILLIAM RUFUS and his wife IDA HEDGPETH,
are ancestors of Melvin Hedgpeth of Turlock, California. There
is a very complete story about WILLIAM RUFUS and IDA beginning
on page 18 of Volume I of the Newsletter.

Both of them were Hedgpeths .... first cousins....

They lived in San Lucas, Santa Cruz and Paso Robles, California
at the turn of the century and ultimately operated the Hedg-
peth Sanatorium in Pass Robles until the death of William in
     1916.

This line of Hedgpeths stem from Arkansas and earlier from
Tennessee and North Carolina. Several NEWSLETTER subscribers
are cousins through this line which we have traced back to
JEREMIAH HEDGPETH b. 1785 North Carolina and his wife CHARLOTTE
     BROADAWAY.

     STORY TIME I don't have a story to-tell ... but maybe here
is one that can be "filled in" .... The names are
something of a challenge... from Vol. I of Anna
     Ford's books:

MESHACK SHADRACK ABEDNEGO HUDSPETH - Nicknamed "Shack" b. Surry
     Co., N.C. 1810, Married 14 Feb., 1830 to Mary Teasley b. 1815
Surry Co., N.C. Bondsman James Hudspeth. Children: (Census
1850 Forsyth Co., Ga.) Robert Newton, George W., Abel M., Mary
     L., N. Jane, S. E. (f), Wm. Airs, and Charles McDowell.

Story: The Hudspeths originally were in Florida but were driven
out by Indians and part of them went to N.C. Another: Meshack
     had two families .. one in the lowlands and one in the mountains;
he had no divorce but spent much time traveling back & forth.

                                                  January 1976

              Hi You-all,

              Sad news ....

I had quite a difficult task in writing this
issue. Has the well run dry???

Luckily, there was the new book about Isle of
Wight County .... and there is still much informa-
tion to be gleaned from Anna Ford's books. Both
of these sources do not contain anything really
new ... but may be new to some.

Another break was to have Val Hedgpeth turn up with
fresh North Carolina material .... that should start
              the ball rolling!

Does anyone know of a book we might purchase that
              will contain early HUDSPETH/HEDGPETH records??
Henrico County .... any of the Carolina Counties?

Should anyone have an idea where promising records
might be lurking .... we might use some our money
to hire research done. But where?

Best wishes for a good New Year!

                                                [signed Fran]
