HEDGPETH/HUDSPETH NEWSLETTER - II/2 - 11

TIME-LINE Ann Theg Brown and her mother have devoted their
combined years to HUDSPETH research, picking up
HEDGPETH references also as they worked. Ann compiled the follow-
ing time-line from her notes which surely places data in manage-
able form. She has divided the material geographically ... the
earliest dates falling in Virginia, then after almost a century
our names began appearing in the Carolinas. This is an heroic
piece of work which can serve as a yard-stick for future research.

This concludes Ann Brown's time line for Virginia. There are
relatively few HUDSPETH references in it .... I'm wondering if
perhaps Ann prepared it as HEDGPETH data and might have another
such list that is strictly HUDSPETH. If so, comparison of the
two lists would be interesting. Okay, Ann?
Next issue we shall see how the family fared in the Carolinas.
The earliest date there was 1742. It is tempting to think that
various sons fanned out of Henrico County, Virginia after the
death of their fathers .... some to the Carolinas, others to the
Virginia interior. Or, did we have new landings from Corbridge
and Newcastle upon Tyne?
May we hear more of the attack on the Hedgpeth Dan River settle-
ment by Tories? My history books give no details.

FAMILY ITEMS:
My grandfather spelled his name HEDGEPETH. Gr-grandfather's
land deed says HUDSPETH and my grandparent's marriage license
record was spelled HAUGHPETH ... some of our family records
are HITTSPETH. Evidently our family couldn't spell!
We have an annual MARTIN-HEDGEPETH reunion at grandfather's home-
town: Lawrenceburg, Tenn. at a church campground there 4th week-
end in July.

[Note: Hope to hear very soon from Mrs. Harrington ...
Names & dates of her HEDGEPTHS (by whatever
spelling) would be welcome news to a good many of
us! Some of us may be able to make that picnic
next summer! ]

WHO WAS THIS MAN ????
On April 1, 1850 in San Jose, California, a man named HEDGEPETH
won a horse race against one Senor Pice, of an old Californio
family for a stake of $10,000. The incident is recounted in
California Life Illustrated by William Taylor (Published for the
author by Carlton & Porter, New York, 1858). The Rev. Mr. Taylor
was engaged in establishing the Methodist Church in California
and on that day was busy opening a subscription for the building
of the Methodist Church in San Jose, and he did not participate
in the "great horse-race excitement" as he was "engaged in prepar-
ing to build a house for the Lord" and "did not wish to give
countenance to such entertainments." Perhaps he should have,
for he raised only $2,000 in two days and he might have persuaded
Hedgepeth to contribute a share of his winnings. Chances are
that Hedgepeth was probably a Methodist himself. Mr. Taylor's
account of the episode follows:
"On Monday, April 1, I opened a subscription for the
erection of a Methodist Episcopal Church in San Jose.
That was election day for county officials, and hence
a day of great excitement in town, but more especially
because of a celebrated horse race, which came off that
afternoon.
"An American by the name of Hedgepeth, and a native
Californian by the name of Pico, ran against each
other for a prize of ten thousand dollars on each side.
Such a stake was in keeping with the times, and such a
scene the highest intellectual entertainment that could
engage the attention of the masses.
"Hedgepeth took the prize." (pp.145-146)
Does anyone know who this may have been? Was this, perhaps, the
Episode of the famous "Hedgpeth Colt" which according to one vet-
sion involved the somewhat deceitful display of a poor but dis-
guised horse while the real one was kept out of sight? [Another
version is that the real horse was disguised with paint] It does

not seem that in such a public event, and for such stakes that
this chicanery would have gone unobserved. AND we must hope for
the honor of the family that the horses, at least, were honest.
- submitted by: JOEL W. HEDGPETH
[Note: For the benefit of those not familiar with Spanish Californ=
ia in the days of the Dons .... There was great emphasis placed on
the honor and chivalry of gentlemen, a fact coupled with easy-
going business practices which proved the undoing of the old
Californio Rancheros. It was discourteous to question another
man's honesty! Yet .... in matters of horse-dealings ... per-
haps the rules were no different even then. Anything goes! -FRN]

ANOTHER HISTORICAL NOTE: It's been said that all HEDGPETHS are
(or were) horse-loving Methodists.
The old circuit riders had to be!
- Joel W. HPTH
Further evidence to support the above tradition:
My Aunt Mary told me that Grandmother Ruth Hedgpeth Campbell
sold her one prize possession .... her horse .... to get money
to send to her husband who was languishing in a Federal Prisoner
of War Camp (Civil War). He never got it.
The only kind thing Grandmother Ruth ever had to say about Abra-
ham Lincoln was that he did return her money ...

STORY TIME The Black Hawk Indians marched past Ralph and
Sarah Hudspeth's house single file for one and
a half days each year. One year a baby boy was left on the
porch with two little toes cut off. The Hudspeths raised him
and each year the Indians would bring presents, placing them
furtively on the porch also. Sometimes there were moccasins
and other gifts for just Indian Charlie, and again there might
be gifts for all the family.
The year that Indian Charlie became sixteen he disappear-
ed when the Indians marched by.
Matt Hudspeth, in later years, was captured by Indians
and taken before the Chief. "You are Matt Hudspeth!" the Chief
declared. Whereupon the Chief took off his moccasin and showed

A-HA ! ! Last issue the FAMILY ALBUM carried
THREE LADIES IDENTIFIED ! a picture of three unidentified ladies
in turn-of-the-century costume.
Well, Cousin Bea has the answer. She writes: "I see you are still
working at your hobby. I love mine too, I have made 2 more quilts,
yards of tatting and some yarn things. I am telling everyone to
get old as fast as they can as it is a fun time! I remember the
picture. It is Aunt Jane, wife of Tom Hedgpeth and their 2 girls
Mary and Vannie. Mary married a Mr. Ash. Vannie married Mr.
Jacka. Aunt Jane was 50 yers old when Vannie was born. Mary
is around 18 years older than Vannie. They also had one brother
Dr. Charles Hedgpeth in St. Joseph, Mo."
Of course! The mother was Eliza Jane Elliott, daughter of Willis
Elliott & Polly Vanderpool. My ancestor was Ellinor Elliott,
Eliza Jane's sister who married James Henry Hedgpeth, jr.; Tom
Hedgpeth was JOEL Hedgpeths' son .... So, Tom & my James Henry jr.
were cousins who married sisters. Both fellows were grandsons
of James Henry Hedgpeth, sr ..... and great-grandsons of LEMUEL.
All clear, now?
Anyway, it's another piece I can find a place for in my jig-saw
puzzle! I'm sure many will be glad to have the picture of Aunt
Mary Ash identified .... she supplied a good deal of the informa-
tion on our lineage sheets.

Both Joel and Jane were, therefore, about 50 years old ....

October, 1975
Dear folks,
I know! It's November already .... and here's issue #2
of Volume II which was due out in October ... so I'm kidding
myself by putting October on the letterhead.
The only way I'll ever get caught up is to do a December
issue (the November one in December, that is!) ...and hope
they don't get lost in the Christmas shuffle.
Cousin Bea may never speak to me again for printing her
entire letter! But she expressed exactly my sentiments
about retirement time .... so hurry-up you-all! It is truly
a joy to be able to do just as you please, at long last!
We have added several HUDSPETHs to our list. Be sure, you
HUDSPETHs, to include dates & places on your pre-1800
information ... if you know only approximately ... that will
do. But in back-tracking, we need to know time-periods &
places in order to converge into the right line.
Surprise! There are HEDGPETHs in Connecticut, believe it
or not! The first inkling came from a clipping about a
young RICH HEDGPETH who made a score for U. of Conn. against
Rutgers. Then, I have rumors of a Connecticut couple, Val
and Charlotte Hedgpeth who are touring the west in their
motor home .... they are scheduled to stop by here soon.
They descend from George Washington Hedgpeth of the Caro-
linas .... just the area we are most curious about! I'm
certainly looking forward to this visit.
Happy turkey !
