STORIES AND TRADITIONS add richness to our endeavor and
bring our people to life! Please send tales
handed down through the generations. In many
cases these stories will die with our generation.
Getting them into print will preserve them.

EDITORIAL POLICY It is my earnest desire. to record only
reliable source material so that the Newsletter
can be a reference tool for HEDGPETH searchers
anywhere and anytime. Stories and traditions
lend interest, but will be clearly identified
             as such.
LET US ALL BE DILIGENT ! Should errors occur, as they
surely will, I must rely on you good subscribers to
catch them. Please amend your copies to comply with
corrections to be noted. Should the grim reaper pro-
vent our publishing a completely amended copy of this
publication some day ......... perhaps our efforts
will permit a correct version to be made eventually by
       someone.

PHOTOGRAPHS - The FAMILY ALBUM section will be delighted to
display your ancestor.... it might also serve to
identify some of those elusive "unknowns" in your
collection. Do not send the only copy in existence
for the mails are not altogether safe. It is a good
idea to have copies made for yourself anyway, for
unpredictable things do happen to the irreplaceable!
Include all the background information you can with
       each picture submitted.

     CORRECTIONS!!!

Please amend your back copies to comply:

     P. 98 Volume I 3rd item: Betty Hedspeth to David Picker-
                ville. Change Betty to Betsy.

     p. 97 - Vol. I, last item: Samuel Hedgpeth consented to the
marriage of Lydia to Archibald Ratliff (Change
                Samuel to Lemuel)

same item: Witness to this marriage was Eliza Jones.
                (Change Eliza to Elijah Jones)

     p. 97 - Vol. I, next-to-last item: Samuel Hedgpeth was witness
to the consent for marriage of Louisa Hedgpeth to
James E. Carlile. (Change Samuel to Lemuel)

Thanks to Rachael Klemm for these corrections! She dug into
the original marriage bonds to verify .... that's dedication!

     QUESTION:

In the marriage item of Louisa Hedgespeth to James E. Carlile,
.... Polly Hedgespeth gave consent .... Who was Polly? Is it
so obvious that I missed it? FN

CORBRIDGE COMMENTS Submitted by Ann Theg Brown (1975)

Corbridge land records are found in:
Hepham Priory Church of St. Andrew
Greenwich Hospital (first mentioned 786 AD)
Duke of Northumberland's St. Margaret's Vestry

Carlisle Dean & Chapter Durham Consistory
St. Mary's Chantry St. Nicholas' Register
     About Corbridge:
Rectory Lands, originally under Carlisle Dean, had two
          principal tenements:
Prior Manor or Prior Mains, the rectory house.
This leasehold was held by Hudspeths from 1594 and
were assigned in 1812 and 1814.
The Hill purchased from Hudspeths in 1609
          Hudspeths also held:
Cawsey Head, a tenement or burgage, from St. Mary's
Chantry (suppressed). Sold in 1628 to Roger by
William Hudspeth, by him in 1639, and after subsequent
sales it was purchased 1665 by none other than Cuthbert
	       Redhead.
His son, Ralph, purchased 1686 lands of Richard
Hudspeth, Cuthbert's grandson by .son John of
	            Shilford - 1733 - and who married 1719 Isabel,
daughter of Wm. Hudspeth of the Hole.
The Chantry, a farmhouse on land now held by Stagshaw
						           Hospital.
Swinburne lands forfeited by him in the rebellion of
							      1569.
	            Tenement in Sydegate
Burgages with land, one of which was Angel Inn.
	       Waterflat
	       Stagshaw Close
The Hole Close, called The Hole
Kyplyngland, (held for 9 shillings and one pound
		   				        of pepper)
The HOLE and PRIOR MAINS were manor' houses leased by Hudspeths
for the usual one hundred years, generally. Prior Mains was
so called because it was owned by the Priory. None of these

were actually owned (by our terms) but were "leaseholds".
Another family involved with Hudspeths was the Carnaby line.

ROBERTO de HODESPETH was bailiff of Corbridge under the
Earls of Northumberland whose control of Corbridge by
1534 passed to the Earl of Holton (Carnaby family).

     HELP !!

So many promising leads come up on occasion that I have neither
the time nor the skill to follow. Perhaps, if I list some of
the possibilities, it might be worth-while. Some of you may have
already explored .... some may sound interesting, and will give
you ideas. (Let me know so we don't all chase the same rainbow.)

     1. ROZELLA-LOEW - [street address removed], Tamaqua, Pa. I wrote
to her for she advertised that she had a list of Valley Forge men

     4 - HEDGPETH NEWSLETTER - II/1
     ___________________________________________________________________

which she would search on request. She responded that her list
consisted only of Washington's personal guard of several hundred
men .... and no HEDGPETH was among them. (I had asked for Lemuel,
of course.) She further stated that she had previously written to
a California woman by the name of Caroline ...(?)... who had also
asked her for HEDGPETH information. [Could this have been our
     Caroline Vosskuhler? ]

ROZELLA-LOEW further advised that if our Lemuel was enlisted in
the Penn. State Militia we should write to:

Penna. Historical & Museum Commission, Harrisburg, Pa.
For records of regular U.S. Continental Army - U.S. Archives in
                                                      Washington, D.C.
Well? I've been sitting on this because I've assumed it has
been done by somebody, sometime already! We don't think Lemuel
would be Pennsylvania-attached .... but it wouldn't hurt to ask.
Is there a similar organization for Virginia to whom we might
apply? Of course, surely somebody did .... right?

     2. YOUR FAMILY and MINE by Col. Ralph E. Pearson, USA Rtd.
[street address removed], Austin Tex. 78704

Says he has much HUDSPETH/HEDGPETH information in his book
"A History of the Fee Family", His note was obscure but he
listed several page references ... and the book was for sale
or was it just the pages for sale? I couldn't tell. We have
a bit of money in the Hedgpeth account for purchasing items of
interest .... let me know if we could use it. Would someone
write to him? He mentioned: Capt. Street Hudspeth; Mrs. Alice
Hedgespeth m. Mrs. Alice Hedgespeth; Mary H. Hudspeth m. Henry
Scott; L. E. Hedgepeth m. Wm, McAfee .... does any of it ring
        a bell?
     3. An idea from Rachael Klemm that I have been procrastinating
        with:

"I think it would be worth-while to check with the Manuscripts
Division of the Alderman Library, University of Virginia,
Richmond, Va. ( a Depository of unpublished records) to see if
they have a HEDGPETH/HUDSPETH Family File. If they do, I would
share in the cost of copying the records there-in. If they do
not, I think it would be worthwhile to place the NEWSLETTER
there. (I'm sending the NEWSLETTER this issue ... and offering
to deposit Volume I with them. Sorry, I should have done it
long ago.) We shall see, so this item is mine.

SEND US SOME MORE LEADS! you busy people are the smart ones!
But maybe, if you have time to point us in the right direction, we
     could get lucky.

JONES/JONES Perhaps more of Rachael Klemm's notes will be pro-
JONES/JONES ductive, anyway they are interesting:

Since the family of LEMUEL HEDGPETH seems not to
have been located in Isle of Wight Co. at the logical time for
the marriage of James Henry Hedgpeth to Ruth Jones to take place,
it seems much more likely that Pittsylvania Co. or Halifax Co.
        could be the spot.

According to his marriage record, DAVID JONES was a resident of
Halifax Co. when he married Bethany Hedgpeth, April 12, 18OO.
DAVID JONES, ENOCH JONES; and ELIJAH JONES lived next door to
each other in the 1810 Census of Green Co., Ky. MORGAN JONES
was slightly removed, but in later census records he is next
door to GEORGE BELL, father-in-law of HOLLAND HEDGPETH, son
        of JAMES HENRY HEDGPETH.

        (a) James Henry Hedgpeth was bondsman for the marriage of
            Enoch Jones to Sally Ratliff.
        (b) Sally Ratliff was sister of Alexander Ratliff who married
            Lemuel's daughter, Lydia.
        (c) Elijah Jones was bondsman, witness, or present at every
            Hedgpeth reference in Green Co.
        (d) Each of these "Jones Boys" were of the right age to be
brothers of Ruth (Jones) Hedgpeth, and may well have been.

SOME ANSWERS Volume I, p.47 of the NEWSLETTER at the bottom of
the page .... there is a listing of CARTER HEDGPETH
in the Tabb's Creek District, Granville Co., N.C. ... It shows no
enumeration, just zero across the line. We did wonder about it!

Betty Hedgpeth sent a sheet explaining the entries in some of
the early records. Whether or not it applies to this particular
entry is not established ... it is just a possible explanation.

"Sometimes a household includes both white & free Negro individuals,
which would result in the anomaly of a male named as head of the
household but no males shown in the numerical listing. Some of
the 'free colored' people were actually Indians, and this appears
to have been particularly true of the mixed households."

     Well ....!
Some of the Pickerel family ... was it Simeon?... had an Indian
wife in Kentucky and his orphaned children were reared by some
of my HEDGPETH kin in Nodaway County, Mo. Or so the story goes.
There was some sort of connection between the Pickerels & Hedg-
     peths.

     HOW .... everybody! - Fran

of Simpson Co., Ky. He was a doctor; and brother to Anna's grand-
father, SAMUEL M. HUDSPETH. His family has the original papers
with JAMES K. POLK's name on the Land Grants.

A doctor! Now, I know why I had trouble reading some of his

the early references any of us have found maybe we could sort
out some of the lines, and by process of elimination then con-
centrate on the unidentified. Usual process of working from the
known to the unknown has not seemed to produce much but utter
confusion, so let's try the other approach.

     FAMILY ALBUM
The picture is of three unidentified HEDGPETH ladies. It was
     taken in Hoquiam~ Washington.

The picture was rescued from the collection of my Aunt Rose
Campbell by some of the Campbell cousins.
Written on the back of the picture is "From your HEDGPETH
     cousins."

The picture probably had been sent to Rose's mother, and
my gr-gandmother RUTH HEDGPETH CAMPBELL. Her HEDGPETH
cousins could have been legion! However · .. those who wound
up in the Oregon-Washington territory are possibly more easily
     traced.
     Who are these ladies?

Who is the JOEL HEDGEPETH who married BELINDA J. WOOD, 12 Oct
     1873 in Polk Co,, Ore. Witnesses: S. E. RHODES & GRENE B.
     SIMPSON?????? B. ~Embree~ JP

The marriage took place at the home of JOHN VANDERPOOL, who
was a great-uncle of my Ruth Hedgpeth Campbell. Rhodes was
     an uncle by marriage also.

This copy has been reproduced several times so that it doesn't
do justice to the quality of his famous penmanship. Are there
any other samples that survive? Notice, too, how easily one
might read LEMUEL as SAMUEL? This is something to bear in mind
     in watching for early records.

     Dear folks,

Herewith the first issue of Volume II. Not very many
renewed so that I wondered if it were wise to continue ...
however, I think probably fall activities sneaked up on us
all and we are suddenly busy! We'll go ahead for awhile
     and see ...

We do need some fresh lineage information .... some
new stories about the old days ... any bible records, census
information, tax lists etc. We have depended heavily upon
Ann Theg Brown and Anna Ford's work ... I know they would
appreciate something new from us for a change.

I'm including our publication schedule for our 1840
Missouri Census books so you can see what I've been up to ...
     I've picked up a cracker-jack partner ... so now we have a
title and everything! Hopefully, I'll find some long-lost
Hedgpeth/Hudspeth names lurking in some of the out-of-the-way
counties, which was my original intention in going after these
records. Be glad to watch for any other names for you-all,
     please but ask!

Already, I'm wondering what other records we might do
     .... any suggestions?
Speaking of titles .... do we need to decide on a name
for the Hedgpeth Newsletter? I've heard there is a place
called "Hudspeth Hold" ----- someone suggested "Hedgpeth
Highlights" ..... Does "Hedgpeth Holler" sound interesting?
What do you think? What we really need is a name that incor-
porates HUDSPETH & HEDGPETH somehow ... "Hudspeth Hedge" ???
     "Hedgpeth Huds" ... · ?????
Two versions of the 1858-9 wagon train story .... across
the southern route from Missouri to California · .. taken by
Judge Joel Hedgpeth & family are available still ... also two
newspaper accounts of the exploits of Marion C. Hedgpeth, our
wild-west outlaw! Wagon Train Booklet & Outlaw Booklet are
     $1 each.
                             Best regards,
                                            [signed Fran]
