[The above information, abstracted from Anna Ford's book,
was based on registers of Corbridge and Bywell St. Andrews,
Raines 'T St. Ebor. and a Schedule of Deeds penes by J. H.
Stracker.]
Note:
As best I can gather from Walter Iley's book, places like
"The Hole", "Prior Mains" etc. were districts in the town of
Corbridge. The Great Bridge across the River Tyne skirted the no.
eastern edge of town. Hexham was a neighboring town 3 or 4 miles
to the east. Bywell is a nearby town, known in very old times as
was Corbridge for its ironworks. Broomley, or Brumley is not in
Iley's index.
A "burn" is a small brook ... a "waugh" is a widening of the level
ground a river makes where it has room to spread itself. Cor-
bridge was originally Cot Burn, near where the Romans built a
camp called Corstopitum. Iley's book describes the character of
Corbridgians, for they are a unique race of Englishmen, and how
they evolved into the manner of people they are!
I was particularly struck by the physical resemblance between
the Corbridgians and our own HEDGPETH/HUDSPETHs today! Note
photographs on the facing page .... what do you think?

HUDSPETHS & HEDGPETH before 1810 +################################
were often confused, so let's get +
both! +
+
##################################+
From Marguerite Cassell, reporting on a head-hunting trip she
took last summer:
"In the National Archives in D.C., I took a look at CARTER HUDS-
PETH's Rev. pension application (because it was the only Hudspeth
application there). He was born in Granville Co., N.C. in 1747.
At Dobson, the county seat for Surry Co., I found his will dated
Feb 7, 1835 leaving his "plantation" to his grandson, CARTER SANS-
FORD and the rest to his wife, Fanny (m.1813) and his two daugh-
ters Polly (Mrs. John Miller) and Milly (Mrs. Hiram Sansford.)
So much for CARTER!
The will of RALPH HUDSPETH, dated June 11, 1776 is more promising.
wife: Catherine; sons: RALPH, CARTER, DAVID, GEORGE, AIRS
and JOHN, daughters: MARGARET MOORE, HANNAH MELIMORE,
MARY BLALOCK, MARTHA WALDRIDGE, LUCY WALDRIDGE.
In Raleigh; I saw some of the original tax-lists & deeds - all
yellowed and crumubling:
In the 1792 tax list (Surry Co.) HUDSPETHs:
Charles 208 acres 2 slaves George 200 acres
David 4 slaves Thomas 174 acres
Giles 408 acres 4 slaves Joseph 356 acres
Mille 600 acres 1 slave
HEDGPETH NEWSLETTER - I/10 - 107
We had to spend the week-end in Winston-Salem waiting for the
Courthouse in Dobson to open on Monday. On Sunday we found
Shallowford on the Yadkin River. It used to be in Surry County
but is now part of Yadkin County. This is Daniel Boone Country.
Daniel's mother & father are buried near there. You will be
happy to know there are 16 HUDSPETHS in the Winston-Salem tele-
phone directory. I called one at random and got referred to one
who works for a funeral home, who referred me to his 83-yr-old
uncle who still preaches at a Methodist Church (sounds mighty
lively), who referred me to his neice in Yadkinville.... the call
to her turned out to Cost $4.60 ... and the distance is only
about 90 mi. Her father, dead for 10 yrs. had been interested
in family history and his papers might be in the old home place
where her sister still lives. Anyways stopped by to visit her
for a few minutes on Monday. She was a very nice lady, probably
in the late 60's. Perhaps she Will remember to check the fath-
er's papers sometime soon!
On Monday, also, we stopped by the office of the Yadkinville
"Ripple" (Published on Thursdays) whose editor has written a
history of Yadkin County..
As a history buff, I had a great time!

Did you know? GEORGE W. HUDSPETH was assistant marshal and census
taker in 1840, Buchanan County, Mo. ??? To whom does he belong?

between here and Fran's closing Letter, is the index containing 41
pages . . . which I will hold off scanning it until a later date.
August 1975
Dear Folks,
This is the August issue .... though September has arrived
while I wasn't looking!
The Index was SOMETHING!!! Please forgive if there are
duplicate entries, etc... also the alphabetizing slipped a
cog here and there. Bear in mind that since the people
moved around the same fellow might be listed in several
places.
Indexing was something of a revelation .... so many rela-
tionships became obvious which had escaped notice before!
Wonder if you can get the same happy results? Let us know,
for the record.
The directory is to make it easier to find addresses you
might want. None of those on the list objected when I asked
in the last issue .... however, some may have been busy and
may not have noticed that I asked! If any on the list really
don't have time to take care of mail .... send letters on to
me and I'll take care of them or refer them to someone who
might be able to help.
Also, some on the list are HUDSPETH searchers. Hedgpeths &
Hudspeths seem fairly well sorted out after 1800 .... but
in records before 1800 they are often confused. The Hudspeth
searchers on our list want to search with us on all records
dating before 1800.
Some of you new subscribers are starting with Issue #l of
Volume II. I am sending along this Index to Volume I to give
you an idea of the contents of the first year's work. Should
you care to order Volume I after all, I'm making a paper-back
book of it for $7.00.
There is an attempt to list all the references taken in
Volume I .... it may help to check it over so that you can
fill in the blanks with records in your files that we don't
yet have. Surely would appreciate your sharing!
Your cooperation and help throughout the work on Volume
One has been wonderful ... without it we couldn't have a
Newsletter! Thank you, one and all!
Subscriptions to Volume II are now due ... I'm still going
to get out Issue #l of Volume II sometime this month, I hope,
though it will be late in the month. I do hope we can have
all of you re-newing!
Best regards,
