Begging Again!
Does anyone have a map of the Corbridge area that
would show the location of places designated in
the Northumberland Church records?
Prior Mains, The Hole etc.:
The website editor has an answer for the above, question at the end of this newsletter down be low ...
It would be a very interesting reference for a
future Newsletter issue. Anna Ford's book has a
charming picture of the Hudspeth farm home, but
it is rather dark and does not reproduce well ....
May we borrow someone's copy? I'm sure it will be
appreciated by the subscribers ... HUDSPETHS or
HEDGPETHS.

favor to have done us all, thank you Mary......FRN

THE QUEST FOR RUTH JONES' FAMILY
Quite a number of our subscribers descend from JAMES HENRY HEDG-
PETH, Sr., son of LEMUEL: We know that James Henry was born in
Virginia about 1785, married in Virginia and moved with his
wife and two young children to Kentucky about 1805. Father Lemuel
and almost-grown family accompanied them and they all seem to have
settled down in Green County (later Taylor County).
Apparently in the same migration was a family of JONES's ....
relatives of James Henry's wife RUTH JONES. They are said to be
of Welsh extraction.
Rachael Klemm has searched the Green County records carefully
and has provided the following data for our consideration....
they are all probably kinsmen of our Ruth Jones Hedgpeth.

DOUBLE GOLDEN WEDDING CELEBRATION HELD HERE TUESDAY
Mr. & Mrs. W. F. ELLOITT and Mr. & Mrs. J. W. HEDGEPETH
Married Fifty Years Ago in Double Ceremony
Never has a more memorable gathering or one of wider interest been
staged here than the Elliott-Hedgepeth golden wedding celebration
of Tuesday afternoon.
Fifty years ago this day, two sisters in their early teens, the
Misses Mary and Susan Davis, were led to the marriage altar by
W. F. Elliott and J. W. Hedgepeth, then young men just into the
twenties, at a camp-meeting service of the M. E. Church South,
at Dixie, Oregon, Rev. J. M. Lovell, officiating.
More than sixty close relatives and intimate friends assembled at
the M. E. Church to witness the repetition of this pioneer union
at 1:30. Rev. H. E. Holcomb, of the church of God, speaking the
nuptial vows. The resident bride wore grey crepe relieved by
touches of shell pink and the visiting bride wore black satin;
both carried bouquets of carnations. Hiss Gertrude Elliott and
Sidney Claypool were the attendants of the Elliotts and Miss
Marguerite Oden and Ray Elliott for the Hedgepeths, all being
grandchildren.
A short musical program followed the ceremony: Solo by Mrs. H.
E. Holcomb, duet by Mrs. Otis Elliott and Mrs. H. E. Holcomb,
reading by Mrs Percival of Monmouth, and a song by little Miss
Eloise and Master Ward Elllott.
That touching old song of "God Be With You Till We Meet Again"
and the minister's benediction closed the program.
To the strains of a wedding march rendered by Mrs. J. L. Guthrie
the guests were led by the brides to the dining hall where a most
bounteous two-course feast was served by the Ladies Aid of the
local M. E. Church.
An "at home" was held at the Elliott home in the southern part
of town from 3 until 5. Dainty cake and frappe were served to
friends who came to offer congratulations and rejoice with these
worthy people over such a happy event.
All of Mrs. W. F. Elliott's six sisters were present and one of
her three brothers, two of whom are twins. One brother living in
California could not come on account of illness. As yet this
circle of ten brothers and sisters of the Elliott children them-
selves, has not been broken by death. [note: the reporter must
have goofed here ... Mrs. Elliott's siblings would be surnamed
Davis, of course ... or do I not read it correctly? ... FRN]
Four generations were present at the event: grandparents, son,
grandson and great grandson.

HEDGPETH NEWSLETTER - I/9 - 101
The Elliott family has been identified with our community interests
since 1906 when they came to us from Eastern Oregon. Mr. Elliott
coming to Oregon from Missouri in 1867, J. W. Hedgepeth also coming
the same year. The Davis family crossed the plains by ox team in
1864. Mr. and Mrs. Hedgepeth have lived a number of places in
Southern Oregon and resided here a few years ago. They have lived
at Creswell the last two years. They have two living children both
of whom were in attendance.
An amusing feature of the golden wedding day was recalled when they
told of a small boy who was perched overhead in a maple tree while
the service was being read and who in after years told them of his
whereabouts, the lad being none other than Fred Burkhart, residing
north of town.
The guests, besides the bridal pairs, were: The Elliott children,
or Mrs. Joe Lister, Mr. & Mrs. Walter Elliott, Mr. & Mrs. Otis
Elliott, all of Prineville; Mr. & Mrs. Charles Elliott, Corvallis;

June 1975
Hail Hedgpeths!
I've run out of lineages! So it is a sorry day ... still
many, many miscellaneous records and clues to be pursued,
but the lineages do help to hang it all together eventually.
Do let me hear from you.
Next issue will be the last of volume I .... and the next
will be nothing but the index for volume I. I would like to
prepare a directory to accompany the index so that all addresses
would be more readily available without thumbing through back
issues ..... I shall enter everybody's name & address ... so
please let me know if you prefer not to be listed.
THEN ..... how about Volume II ???? Are you game? We have
shared a great deal of information but really have not found
the immigrant ancestors quite yet. I'm very willing to continue
if you are .... but of course need your information to do it!
You-all haven't found my LEMUEL yet! Next time I shall publish
some of his handwriting .... and you'll see how "Lemuel" might
easily have been read "Samuel", so that he could well be the
Samuel we catch here and there in the Virginia records. Has
anyone compared the signatures on the original documents?
Since he was a literate man .... in an illiterate society ...
he must have been called upon to write documents at times ....
and sign things ... if only the children's report-cards! Where?
I am snowed under with letters to answer ... the Newsletters
come first, and just don't seem to find time to keep up with
correspondance. I do truly regret this, for it has been such
a pleasure exchanging ideas with so many of you ... so, please
don't give up on me. I shall respond eventually... I know it
must be annoying to you, but hope you will forgive the delay.
Best regards to all,
[signed Fran]
P.S.
Need some more pictures, tool
There are quite a few in my files, but all are my branch of
the clan .... beautiful people of course, but would like to
use pictures from other lines as well.
I've discovered that I don't really need the original pictures.
If you have copies made of your photographs at a photo-copy
machine ... they reproduce quite well enough to be used in the
newsletter.... and cost about 10¢. Banks, savings & loan offices
etc. have this kind of machine and may do it for you free if
you are a good customer. Do not use the Xerox machines ... they
won't work at all well for photographs.
Continue on to Vol. 1, Issue 10 or Return to Home
Webmaster Notes: REVISED I have recently located a couple of
maps in search of the sites of St. Andrew's Church, and possibly
the Hole and Prior Mains [ Manor ? ], that are mentioned in the
Church records of St. Andrew's Church ...
Corbridge - Ordnance Maps Third edition c.1920
After viewing several maps of Corbridge, this town doesn't
appear to have changed much over the centuries, in size and or
geographical points of interest ...
While viewing the map by accessing the above link, I can point
out the three areas of interest here. By starting at the bottom
of the map, where the Corbridge Bridge crosses the "Green Pool"
River Tyne, going north up that road, take either Front Street,
Middle Street or Hill Street and turn right (west) Hill Street
passes by the top of ST. Andrew's Church and grave yard.
Where Hill Street dead ends into Watling Street, go right (north)
until it dead ends into St. Helen's Street, go left (west) past
the wye in the road, then at the end of that road, just off the
screen is the area called " the Hole Farm " shown on a couple of
other maps. Some maps show the same area with the name "Orchard
Vale" as the Second Edition c.1897 Ordnance Survey Map does ...
Now back at the intersection of Watling Street and St. Helen's
Street, turn left (west) again, at the wye in the road, go right
(north) following upward and bend to the left on Stagshaw Road,
just past the bend, and on the right is " Prior Manor "
Going to this link http://www.old-maps.co.uk/ and doing a search for Corbridge, will show you a c.1865 map of the area, you can pan and magnify the map ... and also click the "view aerial photo" to see a semi recent aerial photograph of the same area ...
Here is a few other links with interesting maps and
photographs ...
If anyone else comes across other links that would benefit the
interest of this area, please let us know.
