BOOK REVIEW
CORBRIDGE: Border Village - by Walter R. Iley (1975)
224 pp., illustrated. Published by Frank Graham
6 Queen's Terrace, Newcastle upon Tyne, 2.
Great Britain
Cost: L 3.50 (That's English pounds ... for which my machine
has no type.)
This is no dull local history but a charmingly written,
perceptive account of the life and times of 'the village
which had its beginnings as a garrison town on Hadrian's
Wall. Even before that time people probably lived there.
Since the 13th or 14th Century Hudspeths lived in Cor-
bridge, and the distant descendants of those days will
find this book a vivid record of the place and the way
their ancestors live. Mr. Iley is now working on a
sequel, which will be more about the families of Corbridge,
including the Hudspeths.

Because my small branch postoffice does not issue international
money orders, I purchased a Chase Manhatten Bank warrent to
send for my copy of the above book. Pounds-Dollars exchange
was $2.37 ... so the draft was $8.30. There was a 25˘ charge
for the bank service. Would appreciate knowing if there is
a better way to make over-seas purchases ... I shall surely want
that sequel! FN

DOCTORS OF THE AMERICAN FRONTIER - by Richard Dunlap -
submitted by Eleanor Brown: A paper back book -
publisher ? ....
"A few days ago I bought this paper back book .... on page 137,
it tells of: "One Doctor William South, practicing at Peoria,
Texas. Scott Cooley and Bill Hudspeth, desperadoes, led him
thirty miles through the night to treat a wounded member of
their gang. As day dawned a thief escorted him out of camp and
along the road to town.
'That's a fine horse you've got there, Doc, he remarked
several times. The doctor thought this was flattering and showed
that the scamp appreciated good horse flesh. He was not so flat-
tered next morning, for during the night someone had broken into
his stable and stolen the horse."

RAY HEDGEPETH was born in Crook County, Oregon, February 29,
1889 and d/ed at the hospital at Harrisburg, Oregon on April
6, 1914, age 25 years, one month and fourteen days.
When four years of age he left with his parents and settled
in Douglas County near Roseburg, where the greater part of his
life was spent. [see NL, Vol. I, p.55 ... family photo ... Ray
is #7. This item now gives probable place that this picture

On December 16, 1919 he was married to Sadie Cooper, at Bandon,
Coos County, Oregon. About one year ago they, together with
Mr. Hedgepeth's parents, came to Harrisburg and have lived on
the Weatherford place about four miles east of town. Since
that time Mr. Hedgepeth was engaged in farming.
The funeral services were held at the Southern Methodist Church
Tuesday afternoon, Rev. Wightman officiating. Interment took
place at the A.O.U.W. Cemetery. A sorrowing wife, an aged

Ray's death. Eleanor says: "According to another clipping I
have, he was walking into the barn behind the horses and he
struck one across the flank with a bridle. The horse kicked
and struck him in the abdomen."

BIOGRAPHY: W. B. HEDGPETH (from History of McLennan, Falls, Bell,

p.388 - W. B. HEDGPETH, County Collector of Coryell county, was
born in Tennessee in 1839, a son of J. W. and Jane (Beavers)
Hedgpeth, natives also of Tennessee. The paternal grandfather
of our subject, Jeremiah Hedgpeth, was born in North Carolina,
of English ancestry, and was a pioneer of Tennessee. The Beavers
HEDGPETH NEWSLETTER - I/8 - 81
came from Virginia, and are an old family of Welsh descent. The
grandfather, William Beavers, was also a pioneer of Tennessee.
J. W. Hedgpeth, the father of our subject, came to Texas in the
fall of 1860, settling in Coryell county, where he died in July,
1890. The mother departed this life about 1876.
The subject of this Sketch was reared in his native State,
and was early engaged in agricultural pursuits. In 1861 he en-
listed in the Confederate army, in Company C, thirty-second
Tennessee Infantry, and at the battle of Fort Donelson was cap-
tured and held prisoner seven months. He was exchanged at Vicks-
burg, Mississippi, and his company was changed to Company A; was
in the battles of Chickamauga, Chattanooga, in all the engagements
of the Georgia campaign, then to Nashville with Hood, and was
wounded in the hand at the battle of Murfreesboro. From the ef-
fects of this wound he was obliged to suffer amputation, after
which he returned home. Mr. Hedgpeth then farmed and taught
school for a time, was afterward elected Collector of Lincoln
county, and held that office two years. In 1872 he came to
Coryell county, Texas, and, after teaching school and farming
for a time he was elected to the office of Justice for the
Central District, which position he held four years. He then
purchased a farm, and also followed merchandising in Gatesville
two years, and in 1887 was elected to his present office, and
re-elected in 1889.
Our subject was married in 1860, to Miss Harriet Luna,
and they have had seven children: Frances J., wife of J. W.
Tyson; M. G., of this county; W. L., Duputy Collector of Coryell;
Louisa, wife of E. P. Morgan; R. H. and J. D., attending the
public school. The family are members of the Baptist Church, and
Mr. Hedgpeth has always taken an active interest in everything
for the good of his county.

CHARLOTTA BRODAWAY HEDGPETH

LEMUEL BRODAWAY, Compl. ()
vs ()
The Widow and Heirs of JOHN BROADAWAY, dec. Defts. ()
(continued next page)
82 - HEDGPETH NEWSLETTER - I/8
"On the 16th day of December 1843 the following bill was
filed in the office of the Clerk & Master of the Chancery Court
at Fayetteville, Tennessee."
" ------ Your Complainant, Lemuel Broadaway, late of said County
of Lincoln departed this life intestate, in the fall of the year
1841, without children, leaving him surviving his widow, Martha
Broadaway of said County of Lincoln. ....... Complainant further
states the James Broadawy of Marshall County, Tennessee, Joseph
Broadaway of the state of Mississippi, Lydia, who intermarried
with John Orrick of McNairy County, Tennessee, Susannah Broadaway
who intermarried with Jacob Kin, Charlotta who intermarried with
Jeremiah Hedgpeth, Sarah Broadaway who intermarried with Frederick
Foster who is dead, Jesse Broadaway of Lincoln County, Tennessee
and your complainant (Lemuel); were the only brothers and sisters
of said John Broadaway living at the time of his death.........
That long before the death of John Broadaway, Mary Broadaway,
sister of said intestate John, had intermarried with Rika (?)
Bynum of the county of Lincoln and died intestate leaving her
heirs ......."
+++++++++++++++++
This should be conclusive proof that Jeremiah's Charlotta
was a Broadaway. This appears to be a suit to be able to
sell some of the real estate in order to pay the debts of
the deceased John. There were some 20 or more heirs, some
neices and nephews, some minors. Moral: MAKE-A WILL !!!
+++++++++++++++++
This information came to me through Mr. W. W. Markham whose
great-grandmother was Charlotta Manerva Hedgpeth, sister to
Micaja P., Samuel Mc., and Jeremiah Walker Hedgpeth. Mr. Mark-
ham lives near Fayetteville, Lincoln County, Tennessee. He, as
well as the rest of us seem to be stalled with Jeremiah and
Charlotte who moved to Tennessee from North Carolina.

shortened explanation and record of distribution of the estate
in March: 1857 .... [copy follows]

Editor's Note: Due to the fact that HUDSPETH and HEDGPETH are
used indiscriminately and interchangeably throughout the early
records, it has been decided that all references prior to 1800
should be published in the NEWSLETTER. Whenever possible, those
who have done extensive research will identify these references
for us .... those not identified we can assume perhaps are subject
to speculation and therefore open to further investigation.
By the process of elimination, perhaps we can arrive at a closer
solution to the identity of the particular ancestor we are search-
ing for.
Anna Ford's five volumes of "THROUGH THE YEARS with the HUDSPETHS"
contains a prodigious amount of material ... With her per-
mission, I shall quote from her records dated prior to 1800.
Ann Theg Brown and her mother, Mrs. Walter Theg, have spent two
lifetimes collecting data ... on every possible spelling of
the name .... They are "double Hudspeths", and their records
are faithful copies of the original documents. Didn't you,
Ann, even translate the Corbridge records from the original
Latin? Ann composed a time-line of all her data.
Rachael I. Klemm has been collecting HEDGPETH references for
years ... particularly those that stem from the Kentucky
records. Rachael is my watch-dog ... she is wonderfully
meticulous about sources, and double-checks from the originals
..... an invaluable service!
We are very fortunate to have the combined talents of these
HUDSPETH/HEDGPETH Historians ....!!

GEORGE HUDSPETH - from "Through the Years with the Hudspeths"
Volume I, p.16: by Anna Ford
George Hudspeth's grant in Green county, Kentucky on the South
side of Green River was made by the Governor of Kentucky on
June 3, 1797. Surveyed August 19, 1796.
Grants south of Green River were called "Headright Claims"
Virginia reserved for her soldiers all lands in Kentucky south
of Green River. Lands thus located under the Virginia Law are
of military origin (and are listed in Chapter II).
Until 1797 no person could enter a survey within this great
reservation except a soldier. When Kentucky as a sovereign
state took charge of her vacant lands, new legislation opened
up this great reservation south of the Green River to any persons
possessed of family and over twenty one years of age. Such per-
sons were entitled to not less than one hundred acres or more
than two hundred acres, but must have been a bon-a-fide Settler

On motion of George Hudspeth for and satisfactory proof being
made to Court that he has taken up and improved two hundred acres
of land agreeable to an act of Assembly in that case made and
provided it is ordered that he is entitled to the same as per
entry filed which entry reads as follows: to wit, George Hudspeth,
Senr. enters two hundred acres of land in Warren County. Beginning
