STORIES AND TRADITIONS add richness to our endeavor and
bring our people to life! Please send tales
handed down through the generations. In many
cases these stories will die with our generation.
Getting them into print will preserve them.

EDITORIAL POLICY It is my earnest desire. to record only
reliable source material so that the Newsletter
can be a reference tool for HEDGPETH searchers
anywhere and anytime. Stories and traditions
lend interest, but will be clearly identified
             as such.
LET US ALL BE DILIGENT ! Should errors occur, as they
surely will, I must rely on you good subscribers to
catch them. Please amend your copies to comply with
corrections to be noted. Should the grim reaper pro-
vent our publishing a completely amended copy of this
publication some day ......... perhaps our efforts
will permit a correct version to be made eventually by
       someone.

PHOTOGRAPHS - The FAMILY ALBUM section will be delighted to
display your ancestor.... it might also serve to
identify some of those elusive "unknowns" in your
collection. Do not send the only copy in existence
for the mails are not altogether safe. It is a good
idea to have copies made for yourself anyway, for
unpredictable things do happen to the irreplaceable!
Include all the background information you can with
       each picture submitted.

Many, many thanks are due to all of you out there for your
enthusiasm and the information you have contributed. We have
been picking up one or two new descendants almost every month,
and by placing our publication on the genealogy shelves around
the country surely we shall find some answers for ourselves in
due time. Letters are stacked in my basket .... and I shall
answer them ... please forgiYe the delays. However, hopefully,
you will find your answers in the NEWSLETTER ... for that is
where the information goes first! FN

      HEDGPETH NEWSLETTER - I/7 - 65

The following is a prize from Ann Theg Brown .... never before
published or given to anyone. She also has the same information
      for Hudspeth.
Ann copied these from the U.S. Archives microfilm in Washington,
D.C. It includes all (other than Hudspeth) that were found
for Rev. War Applications, the War of 1812, Indian Wars
Index 1892-1926 Old War Index 1815-1926, and the General Index
1861-1926. Pensions after 1926 are found with the General
Services Administration in St. Louis. Incidentally, Ann says,
this is the building which had the fire about 1973 where a number
of records were burned. Some CSA records are included.

This group does not include any Confederate records. However, the

the sack of Richmond. The U.S. did give pensions to confederates
at one point, so many names are found on those lists. - Ann.

With reference to the above marriage records in mind ....
consider the following observations from Rachael Klemm:
LEWIS HEDGPETH, whom I believe to be a son of Lemuel (but
cannot prove) lived near to my HOLLAND HEDGPETH in
Pittsylvania Co., Va. in 1810. I have no idea of who
the wife of Lewis was, but he has three proven children:
WILLIAM - who married Susanna Dodson - 1839 Pitts. Co
NANCY - who m. Daniel Hill, 1828 in Pits. Co.
                    REBECCA - who m. George L. Dodson - 1825- Pitts. Co

THE STILL UNSOLVED (beyond a doubt) MYSTERY of last issue's
Family Album fellows netted us two very interesting comments.

One, from Dr. Joel Hedgpeth: "No. 1 might be Thomas Riley
when young; unmistakably Hedgpeth. as is no.2 but I don't
know who he is. Deep set eyes~ high cheek bones and a
squarish head in profile are some of the marks. Many of
the men had a bad right eye. No. 3 does not belong ...."
Two, from Alice Hall: "No. 3 is surely a Hedgpeth. It
could be Thomas Elliott Hedgpeth! It looks like William
Ernest, son of Thomas Elliott, but it couldn't be because
     he wasn't born until 1 Aug 1895....."

There are some Rev. Thomas Riley HPTH descendants out there!
Doesn't anyone recognize Grandpa for sure?
With that hairdo and mustache he might well be the boy
     living down the block today!

This month's FAMILY ALBUM features LEE HEDGPETH and his wife SUE.
LEE is mentioned frequently as "The Old Timer" in a little publi-
cation called "AN ARIZONA DESERT-ation" published in Phoenix.

Several stories in the pages of this publication are attributed

TO OUR CLIENTS AND OTHER FRIENDS:        benefit of a common language, Lee and Sue under-
A romance that began in World War I reached               stood each other, and were married a year later by
a happy milestone on June 7, when Mr. and Mrs.                the Mayor.
Robert Lee Hedgpeth celebrated their Golden
Wedding Anniversary. This is how they looked on                      It was July 1919 before Lee and his War
that joyous occasion.                                                          Bride got back to the United States and out of
the Army. Then they headed for the mountains
around Crown King where there were many gold
mining camps and mining days were rather rough.
There could hardly be a greater contrast than be-
tween these mountains of Arizona and Sue's little
French village on the Meuse River.

There follows a story of the early mining
days, this time related to us by Sue.

a picture of Lee & Sue                                                       GOOD SAMARITAN SUE

camp about 40 years ago. When he was very much
under the influence, after a trip to his favorite
bootlegger in Prescott, a friend would usually help
him home on his horse. Each step of the way he
groaned like he was dying and if you asked what
was the matter, he just groaned, groaned, groaned.

She felt sorry for him one time and thought
if she could give him some medicine he'd sober up
and quit groaning, but there was nothing in his
cabin but castor oil. Mike refused to take it, of
course, so Sue sat on him and poured almost a pint
of the oil down his throat. His cursing was some-
thing terrific and Sue ran. She and Lee then went
SUE AND LEE                                             to see friends in Pine Flat, a two-mile walk, and
came back about midnight. Noticing a light in
Those of our readers of long standing may                      Mike's cabin, Lee went in to investigate. He came
recognize Lee as the "Old Timer" who has told                  out holding his nose, and said to Sue, "Mike is
us many Indian Legends and has related stories of             dead." Sue was scared, imagined herself in jail,
his days when the West was really wild. We pic-               and went back in with Lee to see him. Mike was
tured him in front of a cave in our issue of Feb.                  sober and when he saw Sue he cursed a blue
1964.                                                                               streak. The oil had worked too well.
Lee's romance began when he was on a pass
from his station on "Suicide Hill" in the front                                           WOMEN'S LIB
line trenches in France in 1917. All he did was                   In Indian country, Brave walks ahead and
to ask a lady in Vaucouleurs where a soldier could             carries-his dignity.    Squaw walks behind and
find some scrambled eggs and potatoes. This                     carries everything else.

to LEE, "The Old Timer" ... and since one of them is on the
same page with his picture, we'll let it suffice for our STORY
      TIME section this month.

Lee is a son of HENRY HOLLAND and MARGARET E. CLEARY HEDGPETH.
Henry Holland HPTH b. 1870 was a son of LEWIS JOHNSON HPTH
who founded the first Methodist Church in Phoenix. Lewis
Johnson was a son of "Judge" Joel Hedgpeth and a member of the
      1858-9 Wagon Train to California.

So "Old Timer" he certainly was ... in Phoenix. He was born
9 April 1895 and died 29 August 1974 in Phoenix, Maricopa County,
      Arizona.

FAMILY LEGENDS & TRADITIONS (from Miss Nonie Hedgepeth via
      Jan. 30, 1956 Ann Brown)
Let me tell you what our grandmother Hedgepeth told us:

"Three brothers, John, Joel, and Peter Osborn were stow-aways
on a British boat coming to America before the Revolutionary War.

They were prominently connected and knew they would be traced, so
they changed their names. John took HEDGEPETH ..... Joel took
HUDSPETH .... and Peter Osborn took HEDGSPETH, he was a small boy.
They landed in Virginia and lived in the woods about two years
before they came out openly. "
I have the will of my great-grandfather, John Hedgepeth, Chester,
South Carolina. The will was probated in Sept. 1854. He was an
old man, having great-grand-children. He had three children:
      PETER OSBORN, JANE And RHODA.

My grandfather's name was William and he married Susan Colain of
Chester, S.C. My grandfather was born in 1809. That would make
his grandfather John born somewhere in 1760 or so.

John and sister Rhoda came to Chester~ SC, unmarried but John
married at Chester and the will mentions his wife Rhoda.

Now can we connect all this to the John 'who was killed'. In
your research did you ever see any wills of Hedgepeths? All I
know is the stories our grandmother told us and this will of
      John's.

Grandmother said this John, who was killed, he had some sort of
psychic power in that, if he could see an enemy before the enemy
saw him, he could turn himself into some form that wasn't notice-
able. His family of people would urge him to be more careful in
his duties but he thought he was safe from the Tories......."

[This grandmother knew how to charm the children! A little
magic in a bedtime story surely delights them .... but the
background facts bear looking for. FN]
