STORIES AND TRADITIONS add richness to our endeavor and
bring our people to life! Please send tales
handed down through the generations. In many
cases these stories will die with our generation.
Getting them into print will preserve them.

EDITORIAL POLICY It is my earnest desire. to record only
reliable source material so that the Newsletter
can be a reference tool for HEDGPETH searchers
anywhere and anytime. Stories and traditions
lend interest, but will be clearly identified
             as such.
LET US ALL BE DILIGENT ! Should errors occur, as they
surely will, I must rely on you good subscribers to
catch them. Please amend your copies to comply with
corrections to be noted. Should the grim reaper pro-
vent our publishing a completely amended copy of this
publication some day ......... perhaps our efforts
will permit a correct version to be made eventually by
       someone.

PHOTOGRAPHS - The FAMILY ALBUM section will be delighted to
display your ancestor.... it might also serve to
identify some of those elusive "unknowns" in your
collection. Do not send the only copy in existence
for the mails are not altogether safe. It is a good
idea to have copies made for yourself anyway, for
unpredictable things do happen to tho irreplaceable!
Include all the background information you can with
       each picture submitted.

ANCIENT MARINERS ???????? What better explanation could we
                              have for early HEDGPETH arrivals
in this country? Might not sailors to this new land have carried
home tempting tales of the opportunities to be had in the New
World? I apologize in advance for I am ignorant of Northumberland
geographical locations .... (a question mark indicates points on
which I am vague) ... These items are from ANNA FORD's "Through

Alice Hall submitted the above North Carolina records. Some of
the information has come in piece-meal in isolated references,
but having it in this form - statewide - gives us a more system-
atic approach. Does anyone have same data on any other state?
Suggestion: Might we not include HUDSPETH names in any records
appearing before 1800, since the names seem to be
              used interchangeably? FN

cemetery where James Henry Hedgpeth & his wife are
buried (near Dillard, Ore. ) is "Civil Bend Cemetery".
She was perplexed about the origin of the name "Civil
Bend" . .. upon her inquiry it seems to have derived
from the fact that the spot is located on a "bend" in
the river ... and the term "civil" was applied because
inhabitants were anything but "civil" at the time it
was named! Don't think she's entirely satisfied with
           the explanation, either!

STORY TIME The Frank Hudspeth Family - Marion Co., Ark.
                   (1881-8S) by: Charles Walter Pierce
"Father now owned a wagon and team. In the fall before leaving
Sugar Orchard, he had purchased the bones of an old wagon. With
the crude tools he possessed, he rebuilt this old wagon, and
made an almost new wagon of it, minus the paint. It fell to my
lot to do most of the hauling in, and moving and hauling about
the farm, I soon developed into a very good driver, for my age.
I was fourteen years old in December preceeding our move to this
place.
We made a fairly good crop this year. After the crop was laid
by, Bob, George and myself attended a three-month term of school
here at the new school house. This being a very large district,
something like a hundred, possibly a few more attended. They
soon decided to teach a winter term, and Father and Grandfather
were employed to teach this winter term. Grandfather came to
live with us during this term of school.
"We lived here for three years, making a fairly good crop each
year.
"FRANK HUDSPETH, the new owner of this farm, had not moved his
family onto the farm at the time we came, but did so within a
few weeks. His family consisted of a wife, "Aunt Hannah", as she
was called, one grown girl Mary Louisa, some nine or ten year
olds, a small girl Lizzie and a baby boy Jim.
"Well, Bob and I had a real time with these young folks for the
next three years. They were all lively and delighted in fun and
frolic. Mary was just a little more civil, but Sally was a real
tomboy and could run as fast, jump as high, and holler as loud
as most any boy of her age.
"We all soon became well acquainted and the time of fun and
frolic began.
"Each family of children or rather the three oldest of each
family would take turns about, going and spending the first
few hours of the evenings together. This occurred about once
a week for a long time. Of course, we knew other young people
of the settlement, as we had gone to the same school, but these
girls were our special chums.

"Of course, Bob, as he had always done, took first choice, and
of course he picked Sally. That left Mary for me, which suited
me fine, as I had a leaning toward Mary anyway."

THE DEBONAIRE BANDIT !! -

"I have an article written about Marion C. Hedgpeth the,
'Debonaire Bandit'. I'm not sure where he belongs on the family
tree, but he certainly gave the tree a shake! He was born
April 14, 1856 at Prairie Home, Cooper Co., Mo., and became an
outlaw about 1890. He held up banks and trains from Montana to
Missouri. There is quite an article about him also in Mr.
Pinkerton's book about his most famous criminal cases."

After the Revolutionary War the veteran lived in Nash County,
North Carolina with the exception of about 12 months in 1786 or

"When the veteran applied for pension it was stated that he en-
listed in July 1782 and served as Private with the North Carolina

FAMILY ALBUM - Hedgpeth Reunion - (someplace in Oregon)

There must have been some sort of special occasion for this
gathering for all of the women are wearing corsages. At center
is Ellinor (Elliott) Hedgpeth, wife of James Henry Hedgpeth, jr.,
and mother of the two men, John W. and Lewis Kinman Hedgpeth.

These are grandparents of Merle Obenchain and Clarence Hedgpeth
and we shall, be able to supply names of the young ladies and
perhaps some of the children ..... watch for a note on it.
James Kinman and John W. were with their parents in 1867 when
the trek to Oregon from Nebraska was made. Since Father James
Henry Hedgpeth, jr. is not present on this momentous occasion,
we perhaps can assume that it was after his death in 1897 (?).

This picture was from the collection of Opal Campbell Hull of
Tarkio, Mo., a descendant in this same James Henry, Jr. line.

Also in her collection was the picture of the two teen-agers.
Always open to question, of course .... no positive identification,
but parting of the hair does match. And wouldn't you guess there
might be a gun behind the flap of that coat that is so casually
hitched back? One of them (Lewis Kinman ?) must be left-handed.

            Other Hedgpeths will be forthcoming in the Newsletter;
some unidentified .... Wonder how many we can Place?

Have you any "mystery pictures"? Send them along, and
            see what we can do.

The group picture that appeared here, will be inserted
just as soon as a copy can be located and scanned in.

Editor' s Comments:
Rather than a "letter" this form seems to be more acceptable
as 3rd Class mailing material ....
I am well aware of the apparent lack of organization in present-
ing this information each month, and have struggled for a solution
to the problem. Since the information arrives as scattered ref-
erences from many sources, it must be dispensed this way.
I can promise that there will be an attempt at organization when
the Index comes out after issue #10. At that time I shall try
to separate all names geographically .... still not fool-proof,
for they moved around so much!
Can someone suggest a numerical system? Could we assign a number
for temporary identification to every name as it comes up? That
should confuse everybody! Help! Please, help? Anyone?
Meanwhile, I am keeping a file card on every name ... placing
them on family group sheets when possible ... Haven't yet devised
a time-line .... perhaps that would be useful, and if worth-while
I shall do it. Cross-file by location & date & name .... ?????
One excellent way to pick up contacts is by placing complimentary
copies in Gcnealogical Libraries in strategic areas. Would you
all please send suggestions (include addresses, please) ? My
particular wish is to locate descendants in North Carolina and
Virginia .... surely all Hedgpeths did not have itchy feet! Those
who remained in the homeland might have some important clues for
us.

The two versions of the Wagon Train story - 1858-59 from Missouri
to California by Judge Joel Hedgpeth family - are too long to be
placed in the Newsletter, also they would not be "news" to many
of you who have the stories already. Therefore, I shall type both
versions in a small booklet .... 25-30 pages, I think .... and
those of you wanting copies may order them ..... They will be
advertised in a future issue when they are ready .... price not yet
determined, but will just cover my costs. Let me know if you are
interested so that I shall have an idea how many copies to make.

When submitting material, please if at all possible make a note of
your source of information .... and do include dates (even approx-
imate dates) and locations. Much of the information handed down
via Grandmas is simply a list. Better than nothing! But it would
help if you could add other clues to help in establishing identity.
If it is your family, you arc in a better position to make guesses
than anyone else .... we can work together to prove your guesses
to be right or wrong.
And keep the corrections coming! I am not the least sensitive
about making an error .... just embarrassed if an error goes
unrevised ..... BE SURE TO AMEND YOUR BACK COPIES TO COMPLY !!!!
                                    - Fran Nelson
