Jan 1975 HEDGPETH NEWSLETTER - I/4 - 28 ___________________________________________________________________From History of Nodaway County, Mo. - publ. by National Historical Co., St. Joseph, Mo. 1882 - as presented in 1850 Fed. Census printed by Hodges & Woodruff ...(no page numbers noted) These are excerpts ..... NODAWAY COUNTY was part of the Platte Purchase until the winter of 1845 when it was made a separate county, it Was part of Andrew County. Although the following accounts of early settlers make many references to years prior to 1845, any official records for those years should be found in the courthouse of Andrew County, of which the area comprising Nodaway County was still a part. From the spring of 1839 to the fall of 1840, there were per- haps, not to exceed six permanent settlers in this territory. During this times a number of white men had penetrated the country, some on hunting expeditions and others with the view of locating, but its remoteness from the then centers of trades, and the country still being inhabited by roving bands of Indians but few remained With their families. ISAAC HOGAN, HIRAM HALL, JOSEPH HUTSON, THOMAS HEADY, L. N. PRATHER, HARVEY WHITE and possibly one other person, were the first settler's in the area which became Nodaway County. Their settlements were made in Hughes, Lincoln and White Cloud Townships. ....... Grant Township - Among old settlers: GILLAM BAILY in 1842 WIGHT BAILEY in 1842 (Note: These two accompanied Judge Joel Hedgpeth to Calif. in 1858-9) ........Hughes Township The first settler in this township was Isaac Hogan. Some time in the fall of 1840, ELIJAH BUNTEN, JAMES BRYANT and HARVEY WHITE explored the White Cloud country and took Claims. "In those days all that was necessary to be owner of a tract of land as large as one desired, was to lay claim to it; the manner of procuring a title in 'fee simple' was to cut down four trees and chop them off and lay the foundation for a house. Whether the cabin was ever completed or not, it constituted a claim that all honorable men respected." ELIJAH BUNTEN was a professional claim-taker. ~ In 1840 he sold a claim to MIJAMIN BYERS. He later moved to 0regon where he died in 1869. HARVEY WHITE, a son-in-law of Bunten, sold his land to a man named Guy and moved to Oregon. Jim Bryant who was one-fourth Indians had a claim. These three families on White Cloud Creeks and Dave Vinsonhaler and Harvey Dillon were the only white people who spent winters of 1839 and 1840 in Nodaway County. They were accompanied by Daniel Hogan, Joseph Thompson and Richard Taylor and wife. Daniel Hogan was at the time a single man and made his home with Isaac Hogan, Wlilliam M.
- 29 HEDGPETH NEWSLETTER - I/4 __________________________________________________________________Stewart decided to remain in Platte County and gave his claim to Joseph Thompson. Other early ones in this township were: Wesley Jenkins, Orville Graves, William Looker and James M. Kyle, who moved his family to the claim in 1840. January 1975 HEDGPETH NEWSLETTER- I/4 - 34 ___________________________________________________________________CALIFORNIA WINNER - 1850"The HUDSPETH who had the rage horse in California was BENONI MORGAN HUDSPETH, son of William and Tabitha (Beall) Hudspeth. Benoni's horse was named "The Sorrel Colt". The Mexicans offered to race any but the Hudspeth horse. It had three white feet which were painted and the horse was ridden by a man from this county named Poteet. When "The Sorrel Colt" came in first, the Mexicans yelled, "The Hudspeth horse!" Poteet never stopped. I don't know if the money was collected. Benoni was born in Warren Co,, Ky. on January 11, 1816 and died in California, November 16, 1850, a year to the day, from the death of his brother Thomas Jefferson Hudspeth in California They all lived before my time but a few miles from where I was raised, about 30 miles from Kansas City. Benoni died at a boarding house. Members of the family went to California but could not locate his fortune which they thought he possessed" from: Anna Ford .. Dec 1, 1974 [street address removed] Kansas City, Mo. ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ And then we have this thought from Ann Theg Brown ..... Dec.5,1974 "Have more on James Hudspeth but he may be the Hedgepeth in the 1850 horse race. He and several others of his family were in Santa Rosa by 1850. He is younger brother of my William Giles Hpth (1789-1816), both sons of Charles, and grandsons of Giles Hpth ( ? -.1796) ...." from HISTORY OF S0NOMA COUNTY, Calif. - L.A. Public Library HUDSPETH, James: M. - The subject of this sketch, one of Sonoma's oldest and most re- spected pioneers, whose portrait appears in this work, was born in Madison County, Alabama, February 20, 1812. When quite young he accompanied his parents to Middle Tennessee and afterward to Russellville, Alabama where his father Charles was a member of the Territorial Legislature. At the end of three years they went to Monroe County, Mississippi but in 1829 he proceeded to Hardiman County, Tennessee and after residing there for a few years branched out for himself. Mr. Hudspeth's first start in life was in farming and raising .... at Colton, Tennessee, where he passed one year in helping to survey certain lands which had been purchased from the Chickashaw tribe. In 1835 he entered into trade with his brother John C. at Colton, Ginport on the Chickasaw line, Mississippi, which they
35 - HEDGPETH NEWSLETTER - I/4 _________________________________________________________________continued until 1837 when he proceeded to Little Rock, Arkansas and there began public surveying and running township lines. In this place he resided until 1841, when he transferred his location to Fort Smith but on April 15, 1842, left for Indepen- dence, Missouri and there joined a train of immigrants bound for Oregon and California...... (Ann will find the rest of the biography and .. I shall try to get it on interlibrary loan and may perhaps be able to finish it in a 'future issue .... might even be able to photocopy the photograph alluded to! .... I could go to the L.A. library myself, but there have been five murders there in the last three months. Someone doesn't like the customers .... F. N.) +++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++Editor's note: On p.23 of the last issue you will find an excerpt from "The Oregon Trail Revisited" by G. M. Franzwa describing the Hudspeth Cutoff and attributing it to Benoni Hudspeth. Subsequently I found this From "The Far Western Frontier 1830-1860" by Ray Allen Billington "In 1845 five companies reached California ..... the last company to arrive .. Led by the Mountain Man Lansord W. Hastings, and made up of twenty vigorous young men, this party left Independence in late August, yet moved so efficiently that it managed to cross the Sierras just a few days before the passes were blocked by snow. ......"Oregon attracted 3000 immigrants during 1845 ... only 1350 in 1846. "California also proved less attractive in 1846.... Lansford Hastings was responsible...... He published a guidebook, (1845) "Emigrants' Guide to Oregon and California", which damned Oregon by faint praise but painted the Sacramento Valley as the EDEN OF THE WEST. More than this was needed, for emigrants still pre- ferred the shorter trail to Oregon; the only answer, Hastings decided was to popularize a cutoff that would lessen the distance ........ he concluded that he could reduce the time to 120 days and the distance to 2,1OO miles by advising wagon trains to leave the regular trail at Fort Bridger, "thence bearing west southwest, to the Salt Lake; and thence continuing down to the Bay of St. Francisco'. Thus did Lansford Hastings wave away burning deserts and towering mountains, and with a stroke of the pen create the 'Hastings Cutoff' "Boundlessly optomistic though he was, he still recognized that these directions were a bit vague to serve as a guide for Calif- ornia-bound immigrants. Hence he started east in the spring of 1846 to wait along the trail and offer more explicit advice. ........
January, 1975 HEDGPETH NEWSLETTER - I/4 - 36 _________________________________________________________________ "These [emigrant parties] were not long in coming. The first party to arrive was led by W. H. Russell, and was made up of a mixed group bound for both Oregon and California. Hastings happened to be away from Fort Bridget at the time, but one of his lieutenants, a trapper named JAMES M. HUDSPETH, explained the virtues of the cutoff and offered to serve as a guide. Most re- fused to listen, but eventually Russell and eight others agreed to make the try. Trading their wagons for mules they packed their belongings carefully and set out. HUDSPETH led them through the rocky canyons of the Wasatch range and across the barren reaches that bordered the Great Salt Lake until they camped On the eastern edge of the Great Salt Lake Desert. Then, pointing out a hill known as Pilot Peak on the far side as their objective, and telling them to 'ride like hell', he left them. Tow days of terror lay ahead for the Russell party as they plodded through knee-deep alkaline dust without food or water, and with Pilot Peak so obscured by smoke that they fre- quently lost their way. ....." Many ill-fated parties fell into the "Hastings Cutoff" trap, probably the most famous one being the Donner Party. To pick up a final quotation from Mr. Billington's text: " ... some say that the blue haze noted on Utah's hills since that day is the last remnant of the curses against Hastings that they scattered along the trail."+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ I am a Billington fan. He has written many, many histories of the frontier. His style is extremely interesting and lifts the usually dry historical writings into the realm of entertain- ment. - FN +++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++OOPS !!!! - Corrections to be made - Alas, too many of them! January 1975 HEDGPETH NEWSLETTER I/4 - 38 ___________________________________________________________________Thank You for these correction's. They are essential to a reliable record and I cannot over-emphasize my wish to make this Newsletter a valuable contribution to the history of our family. -FN +++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ HYPOTHESIS OF LEMUEL - by Rachael Klemm (Or a bed-time riddle for Hedgpeths)In 1820 three Hedgpeth Families resided in Green Co., Ky. ':' "' The heads of these households bore the names of Lemuel, Holland and James.Lemuel, believed to be father of Holland and James, had · only two members in his household -- a male plus forty-five, and a female plus forty-five. Well, a man who has reached the proverbial three score and ten years of age deserves some peace and quiet! The household of Holland numbered ten members and that of James, fifteen! And now must we mention a sad circumstance, at least for those of us who claim descent from Lemuel. We lost Lemuel after that 1820 Census Listing, and have found no proof of his subse- quent location or death to this day, although some of us literally "shook the bushes!" Holland, son of Lemuel, had a son named Coleman, born ca 1798, believed to be the first-born grandson of Lemuel. Coleman courted a comely orphan named Polly Bennett, married her on July 14, 1825, and promptly moved into Hart County, Ky. Why? Could it be that Grandpa Lemuel, not located since 1820, was residing in the newly formed county of Hart? Since Lemuel paid no taxes after 1818 in Green County, he would also be tax-exempt in Hart, so the Tax Lists answer no questions. The Court Records, of Hart Co., KY were destroyed by fire in 1927. 0n Feb. 17, 1831, Joel Hedgpeth, son of James, married Jane Hudspeth who was this lovely little lady? No Hudspeth family resided in Green or Hardin County at this date. But, second house from Coleman Hedgpeth, on the 1830 Census of Hart County is listed the household of one John Hudspeth, with mem- bers as follows: Two males, ten to fifteen; one male, fifteen to twenty; one male, sixty to seventy; two females, fifteen to twenty; one female, fifty to Sixty. The Hedgpeths living in Green Co. in 1830 all resided in the area that later became Taylor County. This being true, it would be no great distance, to the Hart Co, Line. Presuming that the possibility exists that the male aged eighty to ninety listed in the household of Coleman in 1830 was Lemuel, it would, be natural that family members in neighboring Green Co. would perhaps make more than the usual number of visits across the Hart County Line, to visit their aged sire.
39 - HEDGPETH NEWSLETTER - I/4 __________________________________________________________________ Can it be that through visits to Grandpa Lemuel, Joel Hedgpeth met, wooed, and eventually wed Jane Hudspeth? -- Providing she was daughter of John, of court. By 1840 the aged male is missing from Coleman's household, perhaps by the law of nature, and John Hudspeth is no longer his neighbor. The 1850 Census of Hardin Co. lists a John Hudspeth aged eighty-one years born Va. Wasn't Jane (Hudspeth) Hedgpeth born Va. ?Let it be well-noted as the title indicates, that the possibilities suggested here are purely speculation, and have no proven factual basis. Hopefully, someone will prove me a dreamer. - Rachael I, Klemm [street address removed] Louisville, Ky. 40220++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++While on the subject of Jane Hudspeth Hedgpeth .... there was a charming photograph of Joel and Jane in Anna Ford's book. Jane was adorable! Does anyone have a copy of this picture to, loan me for our FAMILY. ALBUM ?? -FN ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++For the record - to back up Rachael Klemm's little hypothesis she sent this material:Hardin County, Ky 1810, his household being listed as follows: LEMUEL HEDSPETH- 1 male 16-26 1 female 10-16 ' 1 male plus 45 1 female 16-26 1 female plus 45Lemuel consented to the marriage of his daughter, Sarah, on Feb, 11, 1809 to Isaac Romans. Since Isaac Romans is not included as a Separate listing on the 1810 Census of Hardin Co., it seems likely that he and his bride resided with Lemuel Hedgspeth at this date. Therefore the family members of Lemuel' s household in 1810 were probably: . ISAAC ROMANS - Male, 16 to 26 Lemuel - male, plus 45 Lydia - female 10-16 (Lemuel's dau, unmarried at this time) Sarah ROMANS - female, 16-26 recently married) Lydia, sr. - female, plus 45, wife of Lemuel +++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
January I975 HEDGPETH NEWSLETTER I/4 - 40 _________________________________________________________________QUERIES: I don't have any items for this section as yet ...... Please submit some of your problems for the next issue. So, I shall put in one of my own: "~ ·What became of James Henry Hedgpeth, sr. ? He seems to have been last heard from in Nodaway County, 1840-41 ~: when he and; his wife Ruth helped to form the M. E. Church in Hughes Township. He appears on the 1840 Buchanan Co. Mo. census as age 50-60 with wife 40-50. Sometime between 1840-42, Ruth must have died, and James must have returned to Kentucky. He married Margaret Pickerill (possibly a widow?) in Green Co. 18 May 1842. We have no more informa- tion about James Henry, sr. In the 1850 census of Buchanan Co. a Margaret Hedgpeth, age 62, b. Md. is living in the home of Lewis Hedgpeth, (who was probably one of the younger sons of James Henry, sr.? - The age is right Lewis b.1825, Ky.)???????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????CURRENT HEDGPETHSIt was my very great privilege to have had a short visit with Merle Hedgpeth Obenchain recently. She has just re- tired after twenty-seven years with the Central Point, 0re- gon School District. Her associates gave her a marvelous send-off party and she is looking forward to a Hawaii trip as a kind Of "graduation present". It was a Pleasure to have met a new "cousin" and to welcome her to the genealogy group. I think she will join us in 0ur head-hunting, hurray ! *******Clarence Hedgpeth has promised to look me up this month, when he and his wife are visiting in the area.. You'll find him listed among the descendants of James Henry, jr. ... I'll soon print his lineage .... still some dates to be established. *******I'm told there is a Large family of Hedgpeths living near Omaha, Nebraska who raise prize horses, Do we have any addresses for these? The love for horses seems to be a family characteristic ..... The Oregon folk remember one segment of the family remaining in Nebraska when the rest of them took off on the TRIP ACROSS THE PLAINS. There was a tearful parting .... for the family remaining had lost their money and had to be left behind. Merle Obenchain suggested the money might have been squandered on horses.
41 - HEDGPETH NEWSLETTER - I/4 _________________________________________________________________FAMILY ALBUMJAMES HENRY HEDGPETH, jr. was born in Green or Taylor County, Kentucky in 1822, a son of James Henry Hedgpeth, sr. and Ruth Jones. The family migrated to Missouri about 1838-9 and settled-in various places along the Missouri River adjacent to the Platte Purchase area. He was probably living with his parents in Buchanan County at the time of the 1840 census. He was seventeen years old that year of 1840 when James, sr. moved with his boys to Nodaway County. Doubtless, he was smitten by the daughter of a neighbor back in Buchanan Co., for he returned to claim his bride the very next year.James was married the first of June, 1841 in Buchanan County to Ellinor Elliott, daughter of Willis and Polly (Vanderpool) Elliott. James and Ellinor are listed in the 1850 and 186o cents of Nodaway County with their children:Mary E. (Bagby); Ruth Caroline (Campbell); Phoebe M. (Linville); John Wesley; Persilla J. (died 1859) America Ann (Downing); Lewis Kinman; Rosanna (Linville); James David; Jeremiah E.; and William Franklin. (dates on p.3)At the outbreak of the Civil War, Hughes Township Was victimized by marauding bushwhackers. It seemed to make little difference on which side their sympathies were .... everyone was terrified. Many of the men were away at war, it is not yet known whether James enlisted, His in-laws, the Elliotts, volunteered for the south ... every one that was old enough ... as did his neighbors, the Campbells. As the bushwhackers became more and more menacing, Hughes township was depopulated, A very large group fled to Sarpi County, Nebraska and probably James and his family were with them. After the war the Nebraska refugees began to assemble at a place called Oreopolis near Omaha to prepare themselves for the great trek across the plains to Oregon. It must have taken some time to scrape together what was needed for the trip for there is a span of about five years or more that lapses unaccounted for here.In the spring of 1867 the wagon train carrying James and his family left for Oregon. And it is there that his story must wait for more details. This much is known: (1866) Dr. Joel Hedgpeth remarked that James worked for the Union Pacific Railroad and lived near Dallas, Oregon where he was active in Masonic affairs. ... we'll keep working on it. He is buried in Douglas County, Oregon near a small town called Dillard. Ellinor is said to be buried beside him ... These two items verified by Merle Obenchain and Clarence Hedgpeth.
JAMES HENRY HEDGPETH, jr. (1822-18977)from the appearing here was two collection of: pictures of James Henry Hedgpeth, Jr. one with his Beatrice Campbell his wife Ellinor Elliott (Mrs. Art I will insert these a bit Hamilton) later on ...when I have an Elmo, Missouri original to scan .... kgh (a gr-grand-dau)JAMES HENRY HEDGPETH, jr. and wife ELLINOR ELLIOTT HEDGPETH (1824- ? ) from the collection of: Clarence Hedgpeth Prospect, Ore.

January 1975 Dear HEDGPETHS/HUDSPETHS, I hope you will all notice some changes in our format. It has been my very good fortune to have made the acquaint- ance of experienced newsletter-writers who have kindly offered many suggestions. I'm not at all sure that I can absorb all of the ideas at one time. There is much room for improvement. But I enjoy the challenge, and I shall surely try! However, it is still your material ·. · please do continue your invaluable support and we may yet have a good publica- tion. Do, please, point out errors. I depend upon all of you to keep me honest. Actually, I am still quite green about the ears., ·. Archie Bunker made me say that ! .... But this is a project that begs doing ... and I'm game if you are. Watch me closely though.Do you like the FAMILY ALBUM section? I shall need more pictures very soon. If you have any that you cannot identify send them along. Perhaps someone, somewhere will recognize them. For those you do know, please send a little biography ... place of residence and date, at least ... to be printed up with the picture.Another matter .... our title. We have a couple of suggestions. HEDGPETH HOLLER ...... since we seem to have originated in a place called HUDSPETH HOLLOW ..... close to the Scottish border in England. I've been advised we should have a title ... so, what do you think?Beginning with this issue I am using both sides of the paper. Not only is paper getting expensive, it may soon be difficult to obtain. I thought it prudent to conserve the supply I have on hand. You will notice we have an added section of advertising. The publications listed are in turn advertising our Newsletter in their pages. If their ads are of interest to you, please do let them know that you saw their ad in our publication. Brownie Points for us! They have a very large circulation, and may make many more Hedgpeth contacts for us. New people with new information who might help us further along in our quest ......I am looking forward to an exciting New Year. "Seek and ye shall find · .. Ask and it shall be revealed!" Exact quotation, it is NOT .... but the spirit of the quotation must be the Genealogists' Prayer.Best wishes to you all for a happy and productive New Year. Regards, [signed Fran]
