This article from Anna G. Ford's book will be welcome
information to many of us. She does not state her source,
but knowing Anna it must be a reliable one ... I'm sure she
will furnish her sources and I'll let you know next time ....
I just couldn't wait to share this with you!

JOEL HEDGPETH, born 1809, died 1875, married Jane HUDSPETH,
born 1808, died 1859. Joel was son of James Henry Hedgpeth,
born in Ky., 1779 and Ruth Jones, born 1786. James Henry
was son of Lemuel Hedgpeth, born 1757, said to have been at
Valley Forge.

Joel and Jane came west via Santa Fe Trail in 1859, wintering
over at Albuquerque, after the train was attacked by Indians on
the Colorado River,* and settled in Fresno, Calif. The trip
was hard, and Jane died a few weeks after arriving. They had
left Nodaway Co., Mo., with sons Thomas Riley, Lewis, Joel and
William and daughter, Elizabeth. Thomas and his family returned
to Missouri where some still are. A few years later, Lewis left
California for Arizona and established a veritable dynasty.**

James Henry Hedgpeth was the father of Lionel, Matthew, Holland,
Joel born 1809, James, Lewis, Mary, Nancy, Betsy, Sarah and
Barthena.

Barthena "Bethany", daughter of Joel Hedgpeth, born in Greene
Co., Ky., about 1810 and Jane Hudspeth, born in Va. about 1810
married William Isom Linville in 1840, Buchanan Co., Mo., had a
son, Aaron Columbus Linville, born 1855, Nodaway Co., Mo.
See "Mo. Pioneers" p.8 by Jeremiah Smith. ***

James Hedgpeth, married 1841, Elender Elliott, Buchanan Co., Mo.
Bk. A p.51. ****

Notes:

* Two versions of this wagon trip are in my files, though
essentially the same the styles of writing differ and will
eventually write up both of them for you. One is by Rev. Joel
Hedgpeth, one of the sons who was on the trip; the other is
written apparently at dictation of Thomas Hedgpeth, another
of the sons.

** Would greatly appreciate more information on this Lewis!

*** Last Newsletter, p.6 & 7, BETHANA HEDGPETH LINVILLE was
identified as a daughter of James Henry Hedgpeth & Ruth Jones
Hedgpeth. I have this information from family group line-
ages furnished by several dis-associated descendants. When
three or four agree on a topic it does seem fairly reliable,
can anyone offer further enlightenment?

**** This is James Henry Hedgpeth, jr. (see p. 2 of NEWSLETTER)

This is exciting information, indeed:

From Frances Hedgpeth:

Charles City Co., Virginia Order Book - 1676-1679
(where is this today?) compiled by Margaret
                                                      McN. Ayres
  (Court at Westover - 19 Nov. 1677)-

       John Drayton imported 20 persons:

Peter Wyke Wm. Ethridge Jno. Byrd
Jno. Kebssall Christo Crisp Isaac Baites
Ann Prestwood Ann Chetrehr Rachell Baites
Mgt. Drownwell Ephr. Coomes Jno. Hedgepeth
Jno. Walton Jno. Shaw Jno. King
Jno. Brown Jno. Smith Ann Walton
				Susannah Raye David (?)

Would someone please explain to the uninitiated .... ???
Does this mean that John Drayton imported these people as
indentured servants? Can we look for the ship records ... where
might the ship have docked? Has anyone found Jno. Hedgpeth in
any land transactions in this area? Marriage records? This
does seem a real find! Thank you Frances!

Might this be a son of the above Jno. Hedgpeth? ....

(note: sorry Betty did not itemize this family ...
it was towards the end of a wonderful long
letter, so I imagine it was an oversight ...
anyway we know now where to find it!)

Betty further commented that she is using the 1830 computerized
census of Middle Tenn. by Sistler Assoc. and all Hedgpeths but
one are listed as Hudspeth or Hedspeth ... So we boggle the
computers, too!!!!

More from Betty: "In 1970 I was referred by the Shelby (Tenn.)
County Historian to a Miss Ruth Hedgepeth in Ripley, Tenn. Her
father, John William Hedgepeth, died Sept 13, 1952, was editor
of a local newspaper. Her grandfather, Dr. Josiah Hedgepeth,
was a surgeon in the Civil War at Raleigh, N.C. Hospital. He
attended Jefferson Med. College at Phila. Died l0 Dec. 1906.

"Her married name was Ruth Hedgepeth Chism. She seemed not
very interested in family searching" ....

(note: I'll send her a flyer anyway ... her line
might help others of us. FN)

Betty also sent the listing of History of Nodaway Co., Mo. 1882
telling where copies are available. I think this would be a
valuable reference. Would all of you send titles of any County
Histories that you know of listing HEDGPETHS ??? I think many
of us have access to some of this material on inter-library loan.
The titles would let us know what to ask for:

Marguerite Cassell's lineage has roots in the very same
area of Kentucky as do the HEDGPETHS of our line. Another
interesting item is the marriage of MARY PICKRELL to the
son of SYLVIA HUDSPETH MIKELS. Several HEDGPETH marriages
to PICKERELS (various spellings) have been noticed in our
lines.

Anna Ford says she cannot identify the JANE HUDSPETH who was
married to JOEL HEDGPETH (Newsletter p.8) ... here I go with
my speculating again ... might Jane (b. Va.) and Sylvia (b. N.C.)
be from the same family? I suppose it is not strange that the
Hudspeths and Hedgpeths seemed to follow one another all over
the country, there was a pattern to these migrations that every-
one followed for the most part. Then, again ... it could be
that it was the same family but the names were used carelessly
in the records. Will we ever find out?

				TRAILS WEST

From maps prepared by the author of "The Oregon Trail
Revisited" ... a Patrice Press, Inc. paper-back written
	by Gregory M. Franzwa.

Notice "Hudspeth Cutoff" trail blazed by Benoni Hudspeth
	in 1849.

The following was a map showing the route of the
Oregon Trail and the Santa Fe Trail .... this map
will be added in a little later on.

..... AND HERE IS WHERE THE TRAILS BEGAN ... 1840-50

Trails blazed by burly mountain-men who followed the
Indian and animal migrations in their search for pelts
for the rich world-market in furs.

The following was another map that appears to be
an atlas of a section of England .... where there
is a town or area marked as Hudspeth ....this map
will be added in a little later on also.
