"a dweller on the path by the hedge"

This here is the beginnings of
the Hedgpeth / Hudspeth NewsLetter

Although I hadn't personally come into contact with Fran Nelson, until after this publication had run it's short lived course. I did learn a lot from this wonderful lady, in the year's that followed ... She helped me out so many times, with various family lines that we were both related on. And with that said, I would like to present these pages, as a memorial to Fran, and the many fellow researcher's and contributor's of the day's gone by .... I am pleased to be able to pass these records on to the next generation's of  family researcher's, in their honor ....

As time goes on .... if there are any additions and or corrections, fellow researcher's would like to be noted within these records, please send me a E-mail .... and I would be glad to added them as foot notes.

Hedgpeth / Hudspeth NewsLetter Vol. 1 iss. 1

						September 1974

Dear

Enclosed is Issue #1 of a proposed HEDGPETH
NEWSLETTER. There is enough material in my files to complete
at least five more issues of similar length.

The Newsletter's continuation will depend upon the
amount of material submitted by the contributors. I am not a
genealogist and would not pretend to analyse findings submitted,
but there are several very able workers among us who, I am sure,
will offer suggestions to help us all.

My motivation for a venture of this kind is inspired
by correspondance with many ... and though the exchange is
interesting and enjoyable .... we really are making very slow
progress. In the interest of efficiency and economy, perhaps
the Newsletter will serve to answer problems for us all.

There are about 15-20 of us to start with, and by
advertising we should be able to collect more names ... with
more good information ...

My function is to act as a clearing-house for the
material submitted. I'll keep a file and hopefully print only
new information as it comes in. We shall welcome queries ....
lineage charts ... family stories ... family traditions, etc.
The more shared, the more quickly we shall resolve the mystery
of the Hedgpeth immigration to America. Looking far, far beyond
.... we might even find ourselves in the Old Country!

I've been working on a similar Newsletter for the
Vanderpool family (to which my line of Hedgpeths are related);
the venture has been so tremendously helpful ... I just had
to work on Hedgpeth's too! I do hope you will al agree

The Newsletter will cost about 2c a page to print ...
plus about 16c postage (3rd class). I am charging 50c an
issue, which leaves about 20c for advertising... which we
need to keep growing. All I ask is to break even. I am retired
and this is my hobby, my trip to Europe, or whatever else most
normal people enjoy.

I propose to type up one Newsletter a month for l0
months a year ... if material warrents it, I may complete the
ten issues in less than a year, then I'll start on Volume II.
Subscriptions will be $5.00 for l0 issues ... or you may take
a dollar's worth to "buy a look". The most important thing
is your information ... do please share!!!

			    Sincerely,

				      Frances R. Nelson

WELCOME TO HEDGPETH LORE!

This very first issue is intended to give the HEDGPETH clan a
start ..... into finding our common ancestors who first settled
in America. We shall procede in accordance with genealogists
rule .... "from the known to the unknown".

My own lineage chart will introduce the format which we will use
... it seems to be the clearest way to discover links from one
branch to another. I shall keep a master file, and though I won't
pretend to analyse the information ... perhaps I can point new-
comers in the right direction. Would everyone please make a lineage
chart similar to mine (on p.2) to be included in future issues. Please
make it complete, to include yourself ... you may include your dates,
that's optional ... but I promise not to publish them. Some folks are
sensitive about this. My grandmother used to say, "Any woman who tells
her age, her waist-measure or her shoe-size ... is not to be trusted,
for she will tell anything!"

The age of such modesty is past .. for better or worse ... but I
cherish the thought of her having said it. She was a Hedgpeth.

Whenever possible please state the source of information that you
share with us ... whether it be Bible Records, tax lists or whatever..
Even though your source is just grandfather's list on the back of
an old envelope, please so state. These sources are not always lO0%
accurate, but they do lend a hint for us to go on.

We have just a couple of minor differences among us. Some firmly
believe that Hedgpeths are English, and some hold to the thought that
it is a Welch name. Surely, the name is Welch ... but might have
come to America by way of England ... we shall hope to discover!

Another bone of contention is whether or not we should include
HUDSPETHS. HUDSPETH and HEDGPETH names appear in the same localities
at the same time .... often used interchangably in some records. I'm
not addressing HUDSPETHs with this first issue, specifically ....
though I'll gladly include them if it be the wish of our subscribers.
Please let me know your thoughts on this.

Also, please send in names of HEDGPETH searchers so that I may
contact them.

   QUERIES

Have you found a John Hedgpeth who came to Charles City County,
Virginia in 1677 as an indentured servant?

There is a John Hedgpeth in Chowan Co., NC in 1706-1716. Does
this tie in with Lemuel (1757 ???)

May we venture to guess ...? Was Lemuel's wife Lydia JOHNSON ????

BETHANA HEDGPETH - (c1822-_____)

One of the younger children of James Henry Hedgpeth, sr. and his
wife Ruth (Jones) Hedgpeth, Bethana is written up in "History of
Nodaway County, Missouri" ... Can someone verify the year of
publication, and author? ... my Xerox copy is p.452.

Typical of the times, the women receive very little attention in
these biographies ... so we shall see Bethana only through the
activities of her men-folk. Her father James Henry Hedgpeth, Sr.
is reported as opening a small store in Buchanan County, Mo. in
1839 with Holland Jones. It must have been there that the family
lived until Bethana's marriage to Wm. Isom Linville, 25 July 1840.**
We can imagine her home from the biography of her son: AARON COLUMBUS
LINVILLE:
A popular representative of one of Nodaway county's old and
well established families that is deserving of first rank in our
citizenship is Aaron Columbus Linville, who was born near Graham,
this county, March 25, 1853 in a rude clap-board-roofed log cabin.
He is the son of William Isom and Bethena (Hedgepeth) Linville.
The father was born in Missouri, probably Jackson county, the
son of James Linville and wife, his father being a native of eastern
Tennessee, and was a brother to Thomas Linville. He came to Jackson
county, Missouri, about 1832 with two of his brothers, Thomas and
Abraham, the last named settling in Nodaway county, near Graham, in
a very early day; James also came here about that time, probably in
1841, all locating near Graham. BETHENA HEDGEPETH was born in Ken-
tucky and came overland from that state with her parents, who drove
horses and oxen to their old-time wagons; they located in Jackson
county, Missouri, where she married William Isom Linville. They
came to Nodaway county in 184l and located one and one-fourth miles
northeast of Graham, where Isom Linville pre-empted a homestead and
lived in that neighborhood the rest of his life. He was a member
of the Methodist Episcopal church South, very active in its affairs,
and a deacon in the local congregation for many years. He was well
known over all northwestern Missouri in church work and was as well
known and influential in Nodaway county as any man in the county.
Like most of the Linvilles, he was a Democrat. Two daughters and
four sons were born to Mr. and Mrs. Isom Linville, who lived to
maturity, also two daughters who died in infancy. Those living are:
l) James H., who lives five miles northwest of Graham, where he
owns a good farm, married Elvira Jones and they have three children
living; 2) Joel Spencer, who lives about two miles southwest of
Skidmore, married Rosa Dyson, and one child of this marriage died
when sixteen years old; after the death of his first wife, he
married *ROSA HEDGPETH, which union has resulted in the birth of
four children; 3) Aaron Columbus: of this review; 4) Maggie
married George W. Clark and lives in Oregon and they are the parents
of eleven children; 5) Henry C. married Sarah Brown and lives in
the Cherokee "strip", Oklahoma and has three sons and one daughter.

Isom Linville; as already intimated, was a very devout Christian,
and was known for his old-time hospitality. At Methodist campmeet-
ings he was a great worker, during which times he would put up a

boarding tent at which everybody was welcome, often making such
announcement publicly. Ministers made his home their headquarters.
Sometimes during revival meetings as many as twenty guests would
stay over night with him. They found him always cheerful and an
interesting story teller. The death of this highly esteemed and
most worthy citizen occurred in March 1903, at an advanced age. His
wife died prior to his death.

I wonder if Bethana was able to remain as "cheerful" as her husband.
Twenty guests over night in that crude little log cabin! And can
you imagine the job of supervising the feeding of the mobs who must
have presented themselves at that boarding-tent! She died "prior",
indeed!

Actually, my womanly indignation is ill-founded. It was a complement
to these very able women that such affairs were successful. In 1850
Bethana and her Wm. Isom Linville lived in the same neighborhood with
brother James Henry Hedgpeth, jr. and his energetic wife Ellinor.
James' in-laws, the Elliotts; Judge Joel Hedgpeth another of Beth-
ana's brothers; and young Thomas Riley Hedgpeth with his bride
Eliza J. Elliott ..... Surely, Bethana did not lack for willing hands
to help her play hostess to her husband's fame for hospitality.
