GREAT HALE, a considerable village near the Swineshead Road, 6 miles E.S.E. of Sleaford and about half-a-mile from Heckington railway station, has in its township of 759 souls and 5110 acres of land, a large portion of which is a low tract of fertile fen, crossed by the Car-Dyke, and extending 3 miles East of the village to Holland Fen. Its parish includes also Little Hale. The land belongs to the Marquis of Bristol, george Hussey Packe Esq., George B Farrant Esq., and several smaller freeholders. The Church which consists of nave, aisles, south porch and a lofty western tower is a large structure. It was thoroughly repaired and beautified in 1825-7. Among the monuments in this church is one with two small kneeling figures, in memory of Robert Cawdron, who died in 1685. The vicarage, valued in K.B. at £8-6s and now at £580 is in the patronage of the Lord Chancellor and incumbency of the Hon and Rev Frank Sugden M.A., who is domestic chaplain to Lord St Leonards, and has here a good residence and 80 acres of glebe. The tithes were commuted in 1853 for £450 per annum. Here is a Wesleyan chapel, rebuilt in 1851, and a Primitive Methodist chapel erected in 1851. At the enclosure of the fen in 1700, two allotments were awarded to the poor of Great Hale, viz, 19a 1s 31r, let to cottagers at 8s-6d per rood, producing £34 per annum; and 12a 1e 6p also let in small allotments to the poor at rents amounting to £18-8s. The rent of the former is distributed in coals; but £16 of the latter is paid towards the support of the school, which was built by subscription in 1828 on land given by the Marquis of Bristol, and rebuilt in 1871 by subscription. The poor of Great and Little Hale have a yearly rent-charge of £1-11s-6d out of Mr W Everard's estate, left by an unknown donor, and also the interest of £181-8s-4d left by Miss Rebecca Packe, and now vested in the Three-per-cent Consols.
