Dear Madam:

Reference is made to your letter relative to Benjamin Heath, a soldier of the Revolutionary War.

The data which follows are obtained from the papers on file in Pension Claim W. 23273 based upon his military service in the war.

Benjamin Heath enlisted in 1775 at Conway, Carol County, (formerly Strafford County), New Hampshire, served as a private in Capt. James Osgood’s Company; Colonel Bedel’s New Hampshire Regiment; and in Capt. William Satterlee’s Company; Colonel Hazen’s Congress Regiment; was at the Storming of Quebec, the battles of Brandywine, Germantown, capture of Cornwallis, and some small engagements.

He was allowed pension on his application executed April 11, 1818, at which time he was living in Fryeburg, Oxford County, Massachusetts (??ME) aged 66 years.

In 1826 he was living in Conway, N.H. where he died Nov. 27, 1839.  Soldier married Sept. 15, 1786, in Barrington, Strafford County, to Dorothy or Dolly Willey;  They were both of said Barrington and the marriage was recorded in the Town Clerk’s office of that place.

She was allowed Pension on her application, executed July 11, 1843, while a resident of Conway, N.H. aged 78 years.  She died there July 29, 1850, leaving the following children: Susan Haley, Adaline or Adeline Burbank, Oliver, G. Heath, Sarah Stevens, Benjamin Heath, and John W. Heath.

Very truly yours,

A.D. Hillar

Dear Madam:

Your letter of the 19th has been referred to me by the Secretary of State.

I can give you no information of Benjamin Heath except what is contained in his Pension Papers, but apparently you have not received a complete abstract from Washington.

We have here all these Pension Papers of New Hampshire Soldiers; from his papers it appears that his marriage is as you stated to Dolly Willey, both of Barrington, N.H. Sept. 15, 1786.  It further appears that in 1820, he was living in Fryeburg, Maine, his family consisting of his wife, Dorothy, aged 54; son Oliver, aged 16; and daughter Adaline, aged 12.  The widow is stated to have died in Conway, N.H. July 29, 1850 leaving the following children:  Susan Heath-Haley, Adaline Heath-Burbank, Oliver G. Heath, Sarah Heath-Stevens, Benjamin, Heath, and John W. Heath.

Yours very truly,

O.G.H./J.S.                 Otis G. Hammond, Director
