DIARY OF CARL AUGUST LINDSTROM
Written by him, [1908 mission, and 1920]
Passed down in family
July 9th, 1882, I was baptized into the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints by N. R. Lindahl and confirmed by R. Berson.
After saying goodbye to Gasingeholm, I went to Norrkoping where I got a job with Motala Workstad and lived with a copper smith named Anderson until the spring of 1883. During the winter I sold some books every Sunday. February 11, 1883, I was ordained a teacher and since that time I visited with the members as a teacher. I was ordained by Salomo Petterson in the branch of Norrkoping, the Conference of Goteborg and the Lorded blessed me both spiritually and physically.
At the Conference in Norrkoping, May 12-15, 1883, I was ordained a priest and called on a mission as a helper to A. H. Anderson at Westervik Branch. I left Norrkoping in the evening of May 20th and went to Ferringstad, where I stayed with a sister Swenson. On the 21st at 4 o'clock I should be at Norra station in Norrkoping to journey to the Military Camp Malmen for my military service for the first time. However, Pres. Eliason counseled me to go on a mission and so I did. May 22nd Brother Anderson and I came to Karneberg and stayed with the members a couple of days. On 24th we came to Gustafson at Morkvik. The 25th we went to J. E. Janson at Gumlund, Eljenas and Vino and then we went back to Gumlund and help a meeting on the 27th, the first that was help since I came to Westervik branch. Now we went to Lingren at Overum and thereafter to Carl Otto Janson at Marieholm and from there to Carl Oscar Erikson at Ofvertorp and Stjerneberg.
June 1883
I now went to Ofvertorp and Morkvik and thence to Gumlund and Elgenas and thereafter to Sister Danielson at Skarptorpl. On the 7th I went to Gunnebo and that was the center for the branch. There, the books were kept and there were 6 families that were members of the Church. June 8th I helped the emigrants. It was Benktson with family and sister Danielson with children together 9 from Westervik branch and 61 from Stockholm. They left Wastervik at 9 a.m. Sunday the 10th.
Now we went to Gunnebo, Gamleby and Overrum, then we went to Johas Patterson at Holmtorpet. On our way I sold some books and testified to the Gospel. When I came to the members Patterson I was well received. Sister Patterson gave me a winter scarf. On the 14th I walked 18 miles and arrived in Gumlund and Morkvik. I went to Svalbacken and talked about the Gospel. They wanted to listen some more times. The wife had been a Baptist. On the 16th I walked to the member Anderson at Brevassa and invited to a meeting that was to be held at Morkvik on the 17th. We held the meeting but only a few were present because they had a Baptist meeting not far away. Their minister bought a book from me. On the 18th we went to Ofvertorp. On the way we had some Gospel conversations with the people at Wrake. On the 19th we walked to Stjerneberg. On the 21st to Kattdal and to Fogelvik and Sister Christina Chattarina Knutson was baptized by Brother Anderson. On the 21st Brother Anderson went to Norrkoping and I to the shoemaker Bjorkman and had my boots repaired. On the 22nd I wrote to my parents and walked to Carl Petters at Fredrichdal. On the 6th I came to Gumlund, Eljenas and Morkvik, on the 8th to Overtorp and Stjerneberg and the Saints are happy in the Gospel. I talked to a Baptist and he called me a fool. On the 16th I received some underwear and 14 crowns and 50 ore and a letter from Klara Olson. On the 17th I walked from Overtorp to Brevassa and Morkvik. Between the 18th and 19th I had a dream and heard the bells of Heaven toll twice, and that means that we should gather home to Zion. Also did I think that I saw Christ and a big army with him. I saw the mountains too, in Utah and the place where my homstead now is and Christ stood on this place and I joined them, too, but little late.
On the 22nd we had a meeting at Morkvik, we received 1 crown from a brother at Jultorp for food. The 24th I walked to Gumland and there I wrote to Anna and Arnsel, and Klara Olson. The 27th I wrote to my parents. The 28th Brother Anderson blessed a child for the Janson's members. His mane is Anders Amerlik Janson, born June 23, 1883. On the 29th we had a meeting at Brother Nanfelt. The 30th Anderson baptized J. A. Janson and his wife, Josefine. The 31st I walked 28 miles and came to Delhem. Sister Petterson was very ill.
August 1883

We went to Gunnebo, and on the 5th we had a fastmeeting and council meeting on the 6th I wrote the report. On the 8th I walked to Vastervik and 3 o'clock in the night we went aboard the ship Ostern. The 9th at 2:15 we arrived in Kalmar and went to Petterson's members. The 10th we visited Sister Lindstrom and we were very well received. The 11th we voyaged to Oland and were very well received and the 12th we had a fastmeeting at F. Lindstrom at Molstorp. Then we walked to Sister Lotta Larson at Sanasen and had our supper there.
The 13th we went to Lovisa Holmstromat at Stranskogen and then we went to F. Lindstrom but they were not home but there was a couple of farm helpers and they said that we should come over where they were and they would give us a real beating because we went around and ate all the food for the poor. Brother Anderson said that if they wanted to come over where we were, he should knock their heads down in their stomachs but they did not come.
During our stay on Olans, we visited several persons and talked to them about the Gospel. On the 15th we said goodbye to the Saints and left Oland and arrived in Kalmar. We went out in the country and talked to the people about the Gospel and sold books. The 19th we had a fastmeeting at Brother Petterson's. The 20th I said goodbye to the members, Sister Lindstrom gave me 1 crown and Sister Petterson 50 ore and thus I left Kalmar. Now I tracted and in the evening I could find no place to stay but around midnight, they promised me to sleep in an attic at Lattrop. In the morning I continued on my way and when I came to Monsteras I sold a "the True Principles of the Gospel." I had had a hard time to get something to eat but I had sold some books and had some good conversations, and now on the 24th I came to Sister Bos where I was well received and the 25th I came to Gunnebo and there I wrote "Radforhandling," and I went also out to Vastrum tracting.

The 16th I and Brother Erikson were called to go to Bjorkman's and read an accusation against them and we invited them to the council meeting but they did not come and they were excommunicated. The 22nd I invited the people to a meeting, but they invited me to be beaten up so on the 23rd we had an open meeting, the 25th we had another meeting. The 26th we went to Morkvik and there arrived Carl Johnson from Halmstad. On his way he had swindled some money from the members of Wastervik Branch. The girl's name was Ida Charlotta Gronberg - born April 11, 1873 and the boy's name was Oskar Fredinant Gronberg - born December 1, 1870. The 17th Brother Anderson went to conference that should be held in Gotoborg on the 20-21st. I accompanied him part of the way but I could not go to the conference because I had not any money. I visited some members and sold some books and talked to the people about the Gospel. The 25th I met Brother Jonas Petterson at Holmtorpot - he said that his wife died on the 20th of October 1883. He also said that he could not keep the North Star anymore.
November 1883
On the 3rd I went to Gunnobo, but the members there were very indifferent especially Hans Nilson where we kept the records and he said that we should bring them over to some other members but none said anything about it, that they wanted to house the books.
The 4th we had a meeting and a council and there I told the brethren where I could bring the books of the branch and also where I could sit and record the minutes from the counsel's reports but I did not receive any final answer. The 3rd I received a letter from Anderson that I was put in as Branch President of Wastervik and Norrkoping Branch and that Anderson was put in as President of traveling Elder of Wastervik and Norrkoping Branch. These decisions were reached at the Conference in Goteberg. The 9th I sent the quarterly report to Goteborg, the 7th Anderson returned from the conference. The 11th we had a meeting at Brother Nanfalt's and there I was ordained an Elder. The 15th we came to Fiskarehemmet to Sister Sofia Anderson's house and in the evening I baptized their daughter Adla Alfine Otilja Anderson - born June 20, 1867 and confirmed by Elder Anderson. Sister Anderson gave me a pair of socks. The 18th I held a meeting at Gumlund and after the meeting I baptized Carl Gustav Cigfrid Carlson. Confirmed by Elder Anderson. He was born Janurary 16, 1873. The 19th we administered to Christina K. Bengtson for "boneache". The 25th we had a branchmeeting at Stjorneborg and it was proposed that Oskar Erikson should be ordained a teacher. I talked to the people, sold books and also visited the Saints.
December 1883
The last I wrote to Gotoborg about how many books in the branch and how big the debt was. I also received books at the value of 25 crown or 55 ore. The 2nd we had a meeting at Gronberg's and on the 3rd I started on my way to Oland. I arrived in Kalmar on the 7th and was well received by Petterson's members. They gave me a pair of underwear, a shirt, a collar and cuffs and 25 ore. The 8th I took the boat to Oland and was very well received. There, we had a fast meeting and there I ordained Ann Lovisa Holmstrom to a teacher and Stina Lindstrom to her helper. The 20th I went home to my parents for Christmas and Anderson to Norrkoping. The 21st I came home and stayed there till the 7th when I said goodbye and went to Norrkoping where I was well received and had a good time among the Saints.
Janurary 1884
On the first I received a suit of Nils Erikson for 35 crown. I paid ten crown and the rest I could pay later. The 5th I and Brother Emil Erickson went to my parents and the 7th we held a meeting at Hermanshult. My father told me: "Don't do what you will regret. What do you have to say," but we had a fine meeting and the Lord's Spirit was poured out upon us. My father changed his ideas, they asked us to come back, the 8th I left my parents and we came to a croft Uggebu where we were allowed to stay over there and on the 9th Brother Erickson and I separated and he gave me 2 crown to a "gicktring" (Never heard of it before, the translator). I came now to Waldermavik and Charlotta Carlson followed me to her parents - Carl Petterson at Fredrikdal - and we were very heartily welcomed. On the 11th I administered to Carl Patterson, on the 12th we had a fast meeting at Carl's. On the 13th we were together again but Hjelmar Erickson was very sick and I administered to him and he got well at once. On the 14th the members from Fredrichdal arrived and we had a good time together. On the 17th I came to Wastervik and the daughter of Anderson, a member, was very ill and I administered to her. When I arrived in Gunnebo the members told me that the minister in the Gladhammer parish had ordered that those who opened their home for the Mormons to hold meetings in or gave them bed or fed them should be fined. Therefore the members were afraid to let me stay overnight but Brother Gronberg was not afraid. On the 20th we held a fastmeeting at Gunlund, the 26th I arrived in Stjorneberg and there I baptized Alsa Jonson - born Janurary 12, 1831 and her daughter - born March 10, 1867. I confirmed them too.
Feburary 1884
On the 3rd, we held a meeting at Grenberg's and a counsel meeting at Brother Nelson's. The 4th - 6th I wrote the minutes and reports. I was scolded by Brother Nelson because I wrote on his snuff box. This habit costs lots of tithing I am sure. On the 15th I received the books for 12 crown and 16 ore from the office in Gothenburg. I also took the books (branch records) from the Nilson home. I also caught a very bad cold that I could not preside in the meeting on the 17th at Brother Gronberg. I could hardly walk over to Brother Johnson's. I had pneumonia in the right lung, I could not move in the bed for pain but on the 18th Brother Anderson had to leave me and I asked him to administer to me and I was made well at once, and carried a big box with books for Anderson to the station that he took to Wastervik. On the 19th I left the Janson home and was on my way to Kalmar and the 26th I arrived at the Petterson home -members- at Kalmar and was well received. I stayed a couple of days there and visited the members.
March 1884
The 4th I went to Oland and was well received. The 6th I walked to Lovisa Helmstrom at Strandskogen. She was administered to because of comsumption. The 7th I went to John Petter Durrell. The 10th I spent with Sister Nordberg, and she cut my hair. I walked around and talked to the members. On the 15th, I received some books from Gothenburg - 11 crown and 99 ore and then I traveled around on Northern Oland selling books, talking to the people and explaining the Gospel of Christ.
March 1884 [?]
On the 2nd I came back to Motstrop from northern Oland and I "was full of lice" but Sister Charlotta Larsen at Sanason, she helped me get rid of them. She "fried" my clothes in the oven so I got rid of them. She, also, gave me a pair of socks. On the 5th I should hold a meeting in the evening at Sanason but noboby came, but the lady that asked me to hold the meeting said that she would invite the people to come, I stayed until 8 p.m. but nobody came. I returned to Brother Lindstrom's where we had a room to stay in. It was evening and the moonlight most beautiful. I also used to take a walk north of his village because people hated us missionaries but this evening I walked through the village and Sister Lotta accompanied me part of the way. And I came to the village. The women that had asked me to hold a meeting was standing on guard. There was a little grove to the north of the village that I always walked through and in this forest a mob was assembled to beat me but they did not succeed through the Grace of the Lord. The women ran to the grove and told them that I was coming through the village so that when I came on the other side of the village they came there and looked for me. When they were close to me I began to run, but then they started to throw rocks after me, but none hit me and I arrived at the house of Brother Lindstrom safe. They stayed around the house till about 11 p.m. and then they intended to break into the house but at that moment Brother Lindstrom's daughter went out to talk to them and they left.
On the 7th I left Oland and arrived in Kalmar and Wastervik and later to Fredrickdal. Anna Johson and Charlotta Carlson accompanied me part of the way. I went to the Conference in Norrkoping and walked 18 Swedish miles (110 English miles) without sleep.
I was again called to go back to Wastervik. We had some meetings. When I came back to Wastervik I had a letter from Brother Emil Erickson that I could come to Zion. Brother Erickson and some more helped me with money for the journey that I could escape the Military service. I have been able to stay out of it for more than a year and now they wanted me. I said goodbye to the members in Wastervik branch and left by steamer to Malme on June the 1st 1884. In Malmo on the 9th of June 1884 we had to wait for 6 days. I received food and drink by the members there. We left Malme by steamer to Copenhagen across the North Sea to Hull. It was rough weather with heavy seas and most of the people were seasick, but I was not. Arriving in Liverpool, we had to stay there for a couple of days and on the 14th of June 1884, 25 missionaries, 531 of the Saints and some non-members altogether about 800 left for America. We had a good voyage. I was a little sick but I think it was caused by the change in food and the half-boiled meat. Ephraim H. Ney was our leader. We had a Swedish meeting. We arrived on the Arizona in New York on the 23rd of June 1884 at 8:30 in the morning - and at 8:40 on the midsummers eve we left New York on board the train to the Rocky Mountains. We arrived in Odgen on the 29th at 8:30 and in Salt Lake City at 1 o'clock the same day. There were several friends meeting us. Brother Swenson was there and he showed me several things in the city. We stayed at the Tithing yard. On the 30th June 1884 I accomplied Brother Hedman to Santaquin, Utah and we arrived there at 8 in the evening. A Sister Emma Johanson received us. I stayed with Johan Erik Lundholm and they showed great hospitality.
July 1884
I began to work for a Brother Lundholm. I received a bushel of wheat and my food per day. It was very hot and I suffered from it. On the 8th I was baptized and the rest of the emigrants that came. We were 13 that were baptized and confirmed. The 20th I became a member of the Elder's quorum.
August 1884
I began as a shepherd at Frank Wilson's at Payson. I received 20 dollars a month for 2 months and there after 25 dollars. I stayed there until April when I quit.
January 1885
I spent the New Year with the Johanson family. Hanna Anderson was there too. She came to Utah in 1884, September the 18th and worked for Sphi Gundry. She was here to spend Christmas and should of gone back but it was snowing so that she could not go. She stayed over the New Year so we met at Johanson's and we agreed to marry. I went to Provo to see Nils Brook. I sent for Hanna and on the 14th we were married and made our home in Provo.
April 1885
Now I quit as a shepherd for Mr. Wilson and worked in Provo at Simon Peterson for 50 cents a day and the dinner.
June 1885
I moved with my wife to Santaquin and worked for Knut Karlgree at Brackgarden. We rented a little room from Svante Johanson. We were in debt for our emigration - $200 (about) so I thought that I should be able to pay it off now because I earned about $3 a day which was good pay then. I should receive brick as pay and Anderson at Dipo should buy them, but when they were ready to take, Bishop Elai Openshaw took them all. We, that had worked, did not get any. When I was ready with the brick Nils Eklund came. He wanted me to follow him up the Canyon to burn lime. We worked so hard that we should get 100 bushels but they were not burnt enough so we did not get more than 2 bushel. These were my summer earnings. Now, I went up to Silver City and worked for a couple of months and paid my wife's emigration. I had my wife there oo.
Janurary 1886
Now I stayed home all winter because I could not get any work. In the spring - April 14th - I went back to Frank Wilson and the sheep but in the last part of May I had to go home because my wife was sick. On July the 8th she got a big and fine boy Carl Alma, but it was difficult. In the last part of July I went back to the herd. The 25th I left it and we went back home, bought a lot and built a house for me. October 20th I went back to the herd.
1887
April 6th I went home. Planted a garden. On the 15th I went back to the herd.
1888
I continued to herd for Frank Wilson to September 26th. On September 2nd Bertha Serina was born, my first daughter. In August the same year my wife's Aunt Karin Anderson arrived. I also bought 2 city lots from Emma Jarvis and I had now 3 lots. I bought my first horse this year for $12.25.
1889
I helped Andrew and Christofer Frank to fish in Utah Lake. This was the winter 1888-89 and in the summer I worked with a little of everything that I could get. I bought a farm from Hudson. I also bought a cow from Hudson. I worked 1 month for Gundry then 1 month for Tielfen ----------- and went to Idaho for 6 weeks but it was -----------and then to Spanish Fork Canyon ------. In the fall I took over the Frank Wilson farm and moved with my family over to the farm but in the last part of Feburary, we moved away because he did not keep his contract.
1890
The 1st of May I began working for a company from the East. I was foreman to build roads in the canyons for cutting lumber. David Bernhard was born July 13th, 1890. I worked for the same company all summer.
1891
Janurary 11, 1891 I was called and ordained a Seventy by President Jacob Gates. In the spring and summer I worked for Nils Jorgerson in moving the camp sheep and also worked on the farm and with other things. In the fall I bought a ------ and a buggy from Frank. September 6th, 1891 me and my family and Karin Anderson drove to Manti to go through the Temple. I and my wife were sealed to each other for time and all eternily on the 9th of September 1891. We stayed a week and worked for some of our dead relatives. August Ivan was also born on the 8th of December, 1891.
1892
March the 2nd I was in Provo and got my first papers in the spring. I worked at Brackgarden (brick yard) here in Santaquin. Then in the summer we went to Scipio and made more but Engquist didn't succeed so I did not get all of my pay. April 20th I bought 20 acres of land from Hudson.
1893
I leased Hilda Johnson's farm but I did not make anything on it. I also moved up on the bench to live there and I took up 160 acres of land. We, that is, William A. Hudson and me took up the East Spring and the Lost Spring, Feburary 8th, 1892, and we laid pipes between 2 springs, but in the spring of 1892 Hudson took away his pipes and since then Hudson has not done anything to the spring or used it. Oct 10th, 1893 our little Bertha Serina died. She was 5 years 1 month and 8 days old. I and Ahlin's sons Axel and August began a herd of 117 sheep but we had no success. Most of them died the following spring, 1894, but they were old and without teeth. In the winter 1893-94 I drove out selling fish.
1894
I and Hans Larson logged in Annomogi [?Antimony]Canyon during the most part of this summer. I also lost one of my horses. In the fall of 1894 we moved down to Santaquin, on the 28th of November Berthel Hyrum was born, I had to stay home during the whole winter because my wife was ill all winter.
1894
In the summer I worked for John Wall cutting logs in Spanish Fork Canyon. In the fall I went to Nephi herding sheep for P.P. Anderson, but it was very difficult because I did not have enough with bad clothes and I caught a very bad cold. I was alone most of the time. I got rheumatism which I still have 24 years later when I am writing this. I quit in the spring.
1896
After I had finished herding sheep, I began to shear sheep, then I worked together with O. Erisen, - we had a contract of Jesse Knight to drive a "tundel" (?), in 1893, I sold my place at Santaquin to Urdolf Peterson for $425.00 for house, cellar, and sabel (?) and three lots back and the third and with house we agreed on in the year 1896 that I should have $200 instead of $425 for all. I have had a hard time to get what we need for the family for we were in debt for the emigration and it was hard to get a job and when we got a job we had to take "Starpe" (?) and we also had alot of sickness. I have also been cheated out of a lot of my wages.
1897
I took care of Wm. Hudson's haypress one year so now I had even and good money.
1898
I now bought my own haypress. Now I started to make good. I paid $450.00 for it.
1908
My Trip and Visit to Salt Lake City
On June 20, 1908 I left my home in Santaquin to go on a mission to Sweden. My wife and smallest child Ruby accompanied me to Salt Lake City. We stayed with our son Alma for about 6 days.
Sunday, the 21st I, my wife, Alma, Ivan and Ruby visited with Carl Ohlins. We were well received and after staying there for a while we all and Carl and Natti went to Liberty Park, there we met Will Bennett an his father. I and my wife had to go with him to have our supper, then I said farewell and went to Alma's.
Monday, the 22nd, I went to ZCMI to buy clothing, I had $331 to Salt Lake City. I bought several things. Then I, my wife, and Ruby went up to the Lord's house and we went through the whole temple but one room where Jesus and the Father visited Joseph and there we were only permitted to look in. We were up on the roof of the Lord's House and had a good view over the whole city and this House is both beautiful and marvelous. In the evening I and My wife and also Alma and his wife and children and also Ivan went through the city and they had a big festival, so Main Street was crowded and then they stole my purse with $210.00 because I had to carry Ruby, I did not notice when they took it. I also had a key and it followed the thief. Tuesday, the 23rd, I and my wife went shopping for underwear and this book and several other books. I also bought a watch and pen, then we visited Johnson & Erikson and they invited us to dinner. And in the evening, we were invited to supper at Carl Ohlin's and then we went home to Alma's and our little girl Ruby was very tired.
Wednesday, June 24, which is midsummer day and a big holiday for the Swedes, and then my wife, Ivan, Ruby and I went to Lagoon where the Swedes had their festival. Hjalmar Erikson and Joel Hoglund and others were committee members. They had a good program but Dalpolskan was the best of all. We found several old friends from Norrkoping that we had not been seeing for 20 or 25 years and it was very welcome to meet them. Among them were Hedman and his wife, Anna Hoglund and his wife, Emilia Anderson, but her husband Anderson did not come to Utah so she is remarried now, and many other of our friends. Lagoon is a very beautiful place to enjoy oneself, and there were many people. Later in the day Alma and his family came. At 8 o'clock p.m. we went home very thankful for a wonderful, but we were very tired when we came home to our son, Alma's.
Thursday, the 25th, I was at the President's Office and there I was examined by Dr. S.B. Young which is the first president of the quorum of Seventy. He said that I had a little tobacco on the heart, which was correct, for just then I tried finishing chewing tobacco, if I quit it shouldn't hurt me, was his friendly advice. Then we went to Brother Spencer and he fixed it so I got my ticket. It cost $59.00 to Liverpool, but I had to buy a ticket between Chicago and Boston. It cost $16.00, so the full trip to Liverpool cost $75.00. I also send $100 to Stockholm. At 2 o'clock in the afternoon, we were ordained and blessed to go out and preach the Gospel of Jesus Christ. The meeting was opened with song no. 343, prayer by President Lyman, song no. 345. President Lyman said among his good advice and admonishments, that we should come safely back. Golden Kimball in his advice said that we should write down what we were doing and if the Holy Ghost prompted us to say something we should write it and remember it. Apostle Grant said that we should be careful of thiefs, ect, during our trip. Then he also said that we should turn off the gas, and not try to blow it out, and many other advice. I received by blessing from Apostles Richards, he said that I should receive words in the same moment I stood up to talk, he also said that I should return in safety. He slao said that if it was something that we wished that had not been mentioned on our heads, we could receive it from our Father if we asked about it in Jesus' name and tried to live for it. All these blessings, advice and admonishments were given to us in hall to the Lord's House.
Friday 26th June, 1908
I bid farewell to some of my friends. John E. Johnson gave me $1, also Sister Mina Bullock gave me $1. I brought a picture to her brother in Sundbyberg, Stockholm. I also had $2 or 7 crowns and 40 ore to give her mother but when I came there her mother was dead and her brother was not home so I left the picture and money with her sister in law and Brother Weed (for he was in my company) and I was very well received, but she felt sorry she couldn't serve coffee to us, so she bought some soft drinks to treat us with. After I had bid farewell to my children and wife, I left Salt Lake City on the train O.S.L. Ry at 6 p.m.
MY FIRST MISSION JOURNEY FROM UTAH AND MY SECOND MISSION TO SWEDEN
Saturday, June 27th, 1908. Now we have left Salt Lake and my dear ones there and also Ogden. I now pass Green River and it's now 3 o'clock in the morning. At 5 p.m. we were at the first station Kimball in Nebraska and that part little populated.
Sunday the 28th. We were now in a very beautiful country, with big beautiful mansions. It was mostly frame houses, white or yellow and the barns were big, beautiful and red. It looked like the people were well to do. At 9 a.m. we arrived in Omaha and there we stayed a couple of hours so Brother Weed and I went sightseeing in the city. We went to I.Y.M., a very big building that is built for young men, where you can go and take a rest and they have papers and books of all kinds, pens, paper and envelopes, that are free for all. I used the writing materials to write my first letter to my wife. We went back to the station and there we met the rest of the brethren and sisters and they had been to Florence and seen the tree that Brigham planted in 1846 and which is a big tree measuring 13 feet and 1 inch 4 feet from the root. We left Omaha soon after 6 p.m. and a little while later we journeyed across the Missouri River. Before Brother Weed and I left Omaha we went out to Riffer wu park where we saw some beautiful deer and some ugly buffaloes and some other animals and birds. Monday the 29th at 5:10, we journeyed across the Missippi River and at 9:45 we arrived in Chicago and stayed at the Majestic Hotel - Quincy Street between State and Dearborn. We stayed there a little more than a day and a night. I did not feel very well as it ran as water from me and I could not hold it, so it was difficult, but I wrote the second letter to my wife.
Tuesday, the 30th. Today I feel a little better. Some of us went out to Lincoln Park - we went through the museum - there are all kinds of animals, rocks and minerals, all kinds of petrified trees and all kinds of fish and birds. Then we went through the park. There they had all kinds of animals - elephants, buffaloes, reindeer, lions of several kinds, bears of several kinds and other animals. Also some snakes and hundred of birds and many other things that I have forgotten. Then we looked over the Michigan Lake and then back to the hotel and after paying the hotel we left Chicago at 2:30 p.m. and journeyed through the states of Illinois, Indiana, Ohio, and Pennsylvania.
Wednesday, the 1st of July. In Pennsylvania, on the shores of Lake Erie, they raise a lot of grapes, they had big fields thereof. We arrived in Buffalo, New York at 8:30 a.m. and there a man came bringing us to a restaurant, so we had breakfast. It cost 50 cents. Then he brought us to Niagara. We left Buffalo at 9:55 a.m. On train to Niagara, it cost $1.50 to go by automobile and for electric train (car). We traveled on automobile to the American Falls from Prospect Point. It is 167 feet then to Horseshoe Falls 158 feet. They they took us to some other falls and then we left the automobile and traveled by electric car to the Niagara belt line - around and through the Niagara Gorge and this was a beautiful trip, but when we arrived on the Canada side they nearly ran over us with cakes and fruits that they tried to sell to us. But now we have to go back to Buffalo, the train leaves at 4 p.m. Buffalo is no beautiful city, the part I saw was dirty and ugly with high houses and crooked streets. We left Buffalo at 8:20 in the evening.
Thursday, the 2nd. Today we travel through part of the New York state and Mass state. This country side is very beautiful, the hills and valleys covered with spruce, pine and trees with leaves and today it was the first time in 24 years that I saw a birch tree. And this was a very dear memory to me because I am raised among a oak, birch and other trees. Here we could see a house and sometimes a mansion appear between the trees and it was wonderful to behold. At 1:20 a.m. we arrived in Boston. We had now been on our way for 6 days and we have traveled 2657 miles, that is, from Santaquin to Boston and 72 mile to parks and amusement places, so the full trip to Boston covered 2729 miles. We were showed to a hotel called Rovere House for there was no room where the other stayed at hotel Hay Market.
Friday, the 3rd of July. Brother Weed and I went down to take a look at the ship that we should sail with and then we took the street car to Common Park, and there were several statues but nothing else, but we went over to Public Garden Park and it was among the most beautiful I have ever seen. There were several statues and trees and bushes of all kinds and the most chosen flowers that you can imagine and we got there early and sat down for a long while and enjoyed it. I had also planned to see Norumbega Park. We had been told it was among one of the most beautiful parks but I had to go back to the hotel for I had been blood poisoned in the left leg and Brother Weed told me that I had better see a doctor. It began to be black and blackened fast and it hurt very much, so I told Brother Weed that I wanted to doctor it myself and if that didn't help than there were many of the Lord's servants in our company that the Lord had given power to heal the sick, I wrote and sent my wife a letter while I was caring for my leg.,p>Saturday, the 4th. Today, I wrote another letter and sent a package with a souvenir from Niagara and a map of Niagara to my wife, then I had a bath, paid the hotel and went onboard Republic Starline. I got stateroom No. 161, bed 4 and table no. 110 on 2nd class.
At 2:30 p.m. we left Boston onboard the steamship Republic. It had been very warm in Boston, 95 degrees in the shade but when we left Boston there came a good rain that cooled the streets and houses. The first thing I did was to throw the tobacco that I had in the sea. I bought it for 5 cents in Salt Lake City and had about half of it left. The dining room was very fine and clean. It had white cloths on the tables with fresh and beautiful flowers. Food and waiters were the best and we got what food we wanted. A piano was found in the assembly room so we had music when somebody played and many wanted to so we had music most of the time.
Sunday, the 5th. We had a little fog and rain but otherwise we had nice weather. They had an assembly but I was not there and I do not know what doctrine was taught. It was mealtime at the following hours: breakfast at 7:30 and 8:15 a.m. It was lunch at 11 a.m. The women got oatmeal soup and crackers, the men chees and crackers. Dinner:12 and 12:45. Supper 5 and 5:45 and at 10 p.m. we got lunch. Till 12 today they had sailed 328 miles.
Monday, the 6th, meets us with sunshine and fine weather. In the last 23 hours we have sailed 381 miles and at 2:15 we met a boat and then all were up on the deck. In the 2nd class we were 221 and 1150 passengers and with the crew we were 1500. It was told, this was the biggest company thus far this summer on Republic and this company was friendly and happy and most of the entertainmnet consisted of deck games. We had also several other games and dances in the evenings and mostly we had piano music and song until 11 p.m. and then they dimmed the lights in the writing room and assembly room.
Tuesday, the 7th. Another day with sunshine. In the last 24 hours we have gone 388 miles and a little later in the day we had rain but there was no wind. We saw a couple of boats sailing for America. I was acquainted with four Swedes. Mr. and Mrs. Syrberg that traveled for their pleasure and an Anderson who traveled for business and Mr. Olson who made the trip for a company.
Wednesday, the 8th. We had fine weather, no wind, we also saw 2 sailing ships and a steamer. We had advanced 398 miles in the last 24 hours. In the afternoon a little fog and rain and at 6 p.m. rain, a little wind and the boat starts its ups and downs. It was said that the boat was 600 feet long, 53 feet wide and 15,378 tons with a crew of 350. We net New Soland and she telegraphed to us. She was about 50 miles away.
Thursday, the 9th. Fine weather, but the boat still up and down also. We have sailed 350 miles.
Friday, the 10th. There were several that felt little sick. There were not many at the breakfast tables. We had a little wind from side, so that the boat swayed a little otherwise. It was the best of weather for 375 miles. I did not miss a single meal but had no strong appetite.
Saturday, the 11th. Today we met another boat for America, also a large flock of seabirds are following us today, they take what they can from the ship, left-overs from the tables, and this is nice to see, we also get to see the coast of Ireland and that too was nice to see after sailing for 7 days and nights. (Friday night we had a concert well performed.) When the clock is 12 today we have gone 367 miles, a company of 3231 made themselves ready to leave at Queenstown. We sang the national anthems and waved happy farewell. We now saw Queenstown and it looked good in the darkness with all its lights. It was located on a hillside, now there came a river boat and took those who should leave us, it was 10 in the evening. We have now traveled 149 miles since noon so the voyage from Boston to Queenstown is 2774 miles.
Sunday, the 12th. It was sunshine and fine weather. The Ireland sea was very quite and we saw many ships and sailing boats and steamships. We have now gone 240 miles and have arrived in Liverpool at 2:10 p.m. Our whole voyage has been 3014 miles and this for sure has been one of the best, fine weather, a fine crew and a happy and friendly company, but I was happy to go ashore despite all this.
LIVERPOOL AND THE JOURNEY ACROSS ENGLAND
Brother Mellener was there to receive us and help us to Temprens Hotel. We arrived there at 4 p.m. After eating supper, we went to meeting at Durham House - 295 Edge Lane - Liverpool and there was a brother leaving for Utah as the speaker, and another brother. Then they went out on the street to hold a meeting. It was the first time I have heard of that kind of meetings and there were 3 speakers and many listened with interest.
Monday, the 13th. This morning we had priesthood meeting. Apostle Pemrose spoke to us and said that we should be men and keep the Word of Wisdom and quit drinking coffee and tea and tobacco right now and the Lord would bless us, he gave many fine advice and admonishments to 27 newly arrived missionaries. Brother Mellener helped to get out tickets to Copenhagen. We left Liverpool at 2:30 p.m. We traveled through a very nice country that was well kept with big cities and factories.
We, that is, 5 missionaries, arrived in Grimsby at 7 p.m. - that is 152 miles from Liverpool. We left Grimsby at 8:30 aboard the SS Nideros.
THE VOYAGE ACROSS THE NORTH SEA
We were very well received and had 1st class cabin. It cost $12.50 from Liverpool to Copenhagen. I sent a letter from Queenstown and one from Liverpool to my wife. We had a rough sea on the North Sea but not too bad, but most of us were sick. I had a very poor appetite and there was all kinds of food well cooked and served, but it did not taste. Now it is evening and they feel a little better. There were 3 sisters with us to Denmark, also have the days increased in length. When we go eastward, it is 10 o'clock but not dark yet. We arrived at Esbjerg, Denmark in the night, so we stayed aboard till the morning, and then there were 4 brethen meeting us and taking us along to their meeting hall.
THE JOURNEY ACROSS DENMARK
Wednesday, the 15th. We arrived in Esbjerb at 2 in the morning and after breakfast, the brenthren brought us up to their hall and there we had a prayer and song. And after having talked about a little of everything they accompanied us to the station. We left Esbjerg at 11:40 a.m. And then we traveled across Denmark across Little and Big Belt. And we arrived in Copenhagen at 8 in the evening. Brother Christensen was there meeting us and accompanied us to their hall and we were well received by the "Prisseden" Soren Rasmussen and the other brethren. After supper and a chat we went to bed and had a good sleep. Denmark is a very beautiful country and the farming is advanced and their houses are mostly built of rock (brick) with straw roofs. Their property are fenced in with hedges and these are green and well kept and this makes Denmark very beautiful. Very nice and fine.
Thursday, July 10, 1908. After prayer we had breakfast of butter, bread, milk and mush and that was the best meal I had since I left home. After saying goodbye to the brothern and our friends on the trip - Nilson from Manti - Brother Hormen F. Hansen from Salt Lake City - Brother Hans C. Hansen from Weston, Idaho - Brother Christensen accompanied us to the harbor where he bought our tickets, it cost 14 crown and 75 ore. Before I left Copenhagen I wrote a letter to my wife. Brother Hansen was very moved when we bib farewell to him. After saying goodby to Brother Christensen we left the beautiful city of Copenhagen at 11:40 a.m. with steamer for Malmo.
THE TRIP TO STOCKHOLM
We arrived in Malme at 1 o'clock and nobody met us. The people were on strike. Yesterday, Wednesday, they had thrown some bombs against some English workers that had been sent for from England to work here. They killed one and hurt 7 or more. We tried to get some food but they wanted 1 crown and 50 for a meal. After looking around for hours we came upon Temprons Hotel and there we got 2 small pieces of meat, 3 small potatoes and a plate of oatsoup, knife, spoon and fork that we had to find ourselves and this meal cost 40 ore and it was the first meal I had in Sweden in 24 years. Then we passed Malmslatton, that is an old camp where I should have completed my military service 25 years ago but I went on a mission instead and the police looked for me and they even announced it in the churches but when they came to close I moved to Utah. Then we came to Lindskoping Nersholm and at 2 o'clock in the night we arrived in Norrkoping.
Friday, July 17th at 7 o'clock we were in Stockholm but nobody met us so we had to inquire our way to Svartensgatan, Stockholm where their office and hall are. They were still in bed when we arrived there but after a little we were received by the brethren. A little later President Sundval arrived and greeted us and after breakfast I went out in the city but I did not recognize it. Stockholm had changed a lot in the last 26 years and some I had forgotten. I bought a shirt and then Brother Weed and I went out to Sundbyberg to Mr. Hyden, Bergagatan 5, I gave them 7 crown and 40 ore that Mina Bullock sent them, we were well received. I promised to come back. My call was to labor in Norrkoping Conference.
Saturday 18th. After giving my gretings to Brother Sundval from Lars Ahlin and the brethren in Copenhagan I was called to work in Norrkoping Conference and after receiving my letter of calling and paying my food, I bid farewell to the brethren and my travel companion Emil W. Weed from Raymond, Alberta. I took the train at 10 o'clock to Norrkoping and arrived there at 2 p.m. but none of the brethren met me, so I had to ask for the way to the office and hall. I found some of the brethern at home but not Brother Hallstrom. He was in Skane for there he was born, but when he came back I was called to labor in Kalmar branch together with Brother Andrew F. Jensen. After grettings and having talked to the brethren I went out in the city and met my brother-in-law Freden. Afterwards I saw my cousin Anna Carlson, married Anderson and her brother, then my brother-in-law showed me the city then we went to Absckarna where I was 26 years ago and participated in the baptismal ordinances. They have also founded a park there called the People's Park and there we had juniper pop. Then we went to the cemetary and there I remembered an old memory, so dear to me, the place (spot) where my wife and I sat as young people the last time 24 years ago and 2 and a half months. Then we went to Freden's but my sister was not home, she was to our parents. I was now very hungry for I had not had anything to eat for the whole day or since 8 o'clock in Stockholm and it is 8 in the evening, so I went to a hotel and had a meal for 80 ore, then I went to Norra Kungsgatan 7 and talked to the brethren for a while then I went to my brother-in-laws.
Sunday July 19th. After a good rest I had breakfast with my brother-in-law, milk and wheat bread, then I went to Sunday School after which some of the brethren and I went to the Peoples Park and listened to the music. Then we went back to the hall and there we were served cocoa by Sister Alfrida Johanson. At 6 we had a meeting and I was the first speaker and Brother Conrad Erikson followed me, he was a good speaker and bore a strong testimony.
Monday, July 20th, 1908. Today I wrote my wife from Norrkoping. Then I took the train to Nersholm at 1 p.m. and there I transferred and came to Skarkind and I walked from there. I was now at my birthplace and remembered many things from my youth. I also spoke to some of those I knew when I was at home but there were not many left for some were dead and some had moved. Otherwise, they had built more and it was changed, since I was home the last time. I now walked where I used to play, work and run around as a little boy from my birth till I was 15 and now I am 46. On my way I found berries that I picked and ate just as in my childhood. And these, blueberries and billberries I have not seen in the last 24 years.
Now I have arrived at my father's cow pasture and it all looks as when I was a little kid, I also reminded of my own home for I could hear my sister's children through the wooden hill. It sounded like Ella and my little Ruby. Here I have played and run after squirrels and birds but this time is now passed. The first person to meet me was my mother, she came just as I passed over the fence into my father's pasture. I now walked slowly forward, I watch paths and roads, trees and bushes and hills and rocks for they are all dear to me for they were the only playmates I had most of the time. I was alone till I was ten years old when my sister was born and soon thereafter I left home for work. These hills and rocks are also holy to me for here I have knelt in prayer to the Lord asking Him to show me the right way, and He heard my childish prayers. He saved me from different sects that I used to visit when I had opportunity. But when the Gospel of Jesus Christ was preached to me I accepted it at once, it is what the world calls Mormonism. Now I am here.
My father is chopping wood. I greet him but he does not recognize me but when he got to know who I was, he became very disconcorted and shy. My sister and her children were visiting there and seeing me talking to father, they decided not to let the fat man stay over night. Then I went over to mother and she didn't recognize me either, the same with my sister, she did not recognize me. I recognized my father and mother but not my sister. I was very moved and had to go outside and cry before I could say something. Then, I greeted the children and when they learned who I was, they became very happy and let the fat man stay with honest happiness.
Tuesday 21. After talking about a little of everything, then I went out in the fields and looked around. They are now full of flowers of all kinds. Sweden is a land of great beauty and in my parents home, it is very wonderful and here is the right place to rest after traveling home, it is 7000 miles. Quiet and silent, only the birds singing in the big oak top, that is so beautiful, also the birch and hazel-bush are dear to me, I am just enjoying God's beautiful nature and creation. If I only had my wife and children here, I could not wish for more. But my sister and her children are very kind to me and we are really enjoying each other's company.
One of those I went to school with, Hilda Seder - married Oster - visited me. It also rained very hard today (the day I left Norrkoping, it rained very hard and thunder storms and lightning hit several places.)
Wednesday 22nd came with sunshine and fine weather. My father had some hay and laid it out for drying and in the evening it was dry as we stacked it, a little more than an acre. Mother, Tilda (his sister) Emanuel (Tilda's son), and myself, father was on the stack. Alva (Tilda's son) raked and then some was hauled, he has more than 5 acres.
Thursday 23rd. Today I am walking all around the hills where I played as a child and I fully enjoyed it and all the beauty, the smell from the pine forest and the happy chirping of the birds. Mammy, sister and her children are out picking berries.
Friday July 24th. Today it is 61 years since the Mormons came to Utah. I wrote the 11th letter to Hanna Lindstrom and my sister brought to the mailbox at Skardind station and my father is out in the woods chopping.
Saturday 25th. I cut hay for my father. My brother-in-law also arrived to help father with the hay. He brought me a letter from my wife and children and I was very happy about it, for this was the first letter since I left home. It was written July 11th and had been on its way for only 14 days. My brother-in-law was a cheerful and nice man.
Sunday 26th. As usual I was around in the hills for it is very beautiful here to see all these fine lilies grow all over in the fresh pine forest under the big oak and under the white-barked umbrageous birch, and the hazel certainly helps to beautify this country and the songs from the birds are heard everywhere. My brother-in-law also goes back today.
Monday 27th, I bid farewell to my mother and gave her 5 crown and bid farewell to my father. He is in very good shape for his age, he is 82 but the rheumatism is hard on him, but he works in the forest chopping wood and fences.
MY JOURNEY BACK TO NORRKOPING AND MY VISIT THERE
I left my father's place to go to Norrkoping, my mother accompanied me, and she is in very good health still, she is about 70. She is a little limping since she broke her hip. Also my sister Matilda and her children accompanied me half way to Skarkind and that is about a swedish mile. I now said goodby to them and walked to Skarkind station where I took the train to Norrkpoing where I arrived around 4 o'clock and there I met President Hallstrom. I now wrote my name and arrival to Norrkpoing in the register. I wrote down my arrival for July 18th, 1908 and there were 8 missionaries. 5 belonging to Norrkpoing, 2 to Wastervik and one to Wingaker and there were 9 with me and I belonged to Kalmar branch. I received a letter from my wife that she wrote on the 5th of July. Brother Hallstrom told me that it would cost $20 even with the best savings or 75 crown per month. In the evening they had a party for Conrad Erikson. He received 5 bowls of glass for cookies or fruit and a vase to put flowers into and its foot was made of silver and they served coffee and chocolate and then they had song and speeches. Also for him tears and many of the members also cried.
Tuesday 28. I went to August Johanson - Alegatan number 11 - but he did not recognize me and I owed him 25 crowns that I had not been able to pay him because I did not know his address. I wanted to give him 50 crowns but he said it was unrighteous to take that much so he took 35 instead. I was very well received by them and they gave me food and drink. I thanked them for it and went back to the hall where I bought books for 10 crowns and 25 ore. Then I wrote my 12th letter to my wife. In the evening Brother Erikson left. He was dressed in flowers all over his body that the sisters put on him, because he was very loved in Norrkoping.
THE JOURNEY AND ARRIVAL IN KALMAR
Wednesday 29th. After saying goodbye to my brother-in-law, the brethren accompanied me to the station. I bid farewell to them and the train left at 1 p.m. All trains are filled with people so it looks like the Swedish people has plenty of money to spend on traveling. We now arrived in Hulsfred where we had to change cars, it is 6:50 p.m. and at 8 we will arrive at Berga where we once again have to change cars. Under the way I made acquaintance with a Mrs. Maria Risberg from Motala. She would visit relatives and I talked about the Gospel principles to her. At 10:25 p.m. I arrived in Kalmar. Nobody met me and it was dark, so it was difficult for me in order for me to find the place, but I met a man and asked him and he accompanied me in order for me to find the place but he could not find the house number, so he went up into every house and lighted a match but still he could not find the number. There came one more whom we asked but the same thing happened to him and we continued till there were four persons helping me, but still we could not find the house, so finally they asked me what the man I was looking for was doing and I said he was a Mormon missionary. Well, they knew very well where he lived and brought me there at once. I thanked them and they left. But it was not better now in the darkness. I knocked, and when I had knocked for quite a while sombody came out asking me what I wanted. I told them I wanted to see Jenson and they said that he was not home. I asked after the key and they told me it was on the next floor, so I tried to go there but it was no easy matter in the darkness, but eventually I found the key and when I came down again I knocked on the wrong door so somebody came out dressed only in a shirt and showed me the right place and then I went to bed.
Thursday July 30th. I wrote my thirteenth letter to my wife and then I went down to the depot after my trunks. When I came back Brother Jenson was there and after talking and eating for a couple of hours we went out sightseeing in the city. We went to the castle and I also saw 4 very old cannons and I also drank from the well at the castle. I also saw the marks on the walls after the shells. Then we went to the cemetary and there they had dug two new graves and at the first gaves I saw several bones, then we went over to the second and it looked a little funny there so I took a spade that was standing there and dug a little and found a skull after a women because it had long hair and Brother Jenson thought that it was very unpleasant to be dug up like that.
Friday, July 31. We received Era and Deseret News and I also took a bath and in the evening I went out in the city and listened to the music.
Saturday, August 1st, 1908. We went out shopping for food and then we fixed the books we would sell. I have now reached the end of my journey. I have traveled 7405 English miles and I had $118 of the $370 I had before I left.
MY MISSIONARY MINISTRY IN KALMAR BRANCH
Sunday, August 2nd, 1908. It was Fast Day. Our commandment was to fast but our landlord Johanson invited us to coffee and cake and we would not hurt him so we had the coffee. He does not belong to the Church, but we broke 2 commandments, had coffee and did not sanctify the Fast Day. I wrote the 14th letter to my wife. Cobbler Sjoholm visited us in the afternoon and I spoke about the Gospel for 3 hours.
Monday, August 3rd. We left Kalmar at 11 a.m. with the ferry Kalmarsund across the strait of Fergstaden and then we went to Hilda Nordberg where we got fruit juice and sandwiches and milk. I also saw a letter I wrote to her 25 years ago when I was a missionary in the Westervik Branch. She complained she was sickly. I gave her 1 crown. She lives at Rumbacken, the parish of Foslunda. Then we passed many places and arrived at Wickleby and there we stayed at Olsborh.
Tuesday, August 4th. After talking about the Gospel and paid him 25 ore and went out tracting but I could not sell any books, I came to a place where I gave them a tract and they sent the dog after me in return and he tore my pants. It cost me 50 ore to have them reparied. Then we came to Resno and I sold some books and I also gave them some tracts and I spoke about the Gospel then we came to Mysinge and we were allowed to stay with the storekeeper. Carl Janson went out selling some books in the town, then we went to Janson's house and accompained us to an old sepulchral mound that was located outside his house. The mound was about 10 feet high. They have now dug down to the sepulchral chamber passage. It is 18 feet long, 4 feet high and 30 inches wide. The chamber proper is 12 foot long, 6 foot wide and 6 feet high. In this chamber they found 35 skeltons and a whistle that looked like a horn 6 inches long. They say that those skeletons are 4500 years old. The same day we were there they finished taking them up. The teeth were well kept.
Wednesday, August 5th. After paying 1 crown for supper, bed and breakfast, we went selling books and tracting. We came to Lilla Dalby and there I talked to a man for two hours about the Gospel. He said that all I said was found in the Bible, but still he could not believe what I said. Then we stayed at Dalbu Inn. It cost 90 ore. We could have stayed with an unmarried woman but she looked suspicious for me. I kind of think she was for anybody.
Thursday, August 6th. We sold books and tracted. I also got breakfast at a place then we came to Risinge and Morbylanga but no boat left today so I went to Fregstaden and onboard the boat to Kalmar. I was both tired and skinless.
Friday, August 7th. I wrote a letter to my wife.
Saturday, August 8th. I brought a bag and gave 7 crown to Brother Jensen. This week I have sold 52 small books and given away 250 tracts and we also visited sister Patricia Palm. We gave her the Star then we went down to harbor to see the Ferry Kalmarsund sail out in the strait. It was filled and they had a good time and music. Also one of my Patriarchal blessings was filled this week when I was on Oland it has been said that I should go far to far off lands and the Islands of the sea and this has been literally fulfilled.
Sunday, August 9th. Brother Jenson and I visited Mr. Carlson. He works at the printing shop and he is friendly towards us. He also has a daughter who is in Utah and is a Monorn. Then we visited Nord, his wife is said to wish to be baptized but he does not want to.

We left Kalmar at 11 and came to Fergstaden visiting Hilda Norborg and we had 4 pair of garments to be laundered and after eating a sandwich we went through Rosma and came to storekeeper Janson at Mysinge and there we stayed overnight. The rocks that cover the sepulchral mound are very big or more correct over the champer and passage.
Wednesday, August 12th. After paying lodging, 1 crown, we sold books and gave away tracts. I came to the parish minister at Smedby. His wife bought 3 books and went in to her dear husband with them but after a while the minister came out and said You are a Mormon apostle. I said no but I am a Mormon, then he said that we had polygamy, but I said no then he said I lied and this he said three times then he ordered me to leave but I did not leave fast enough so he commanded me for the second time to leave so I left. Then I came to Klinta and Garstorp and then I had forgotten my unbrella so I had to return to Klinta and I found it at shoemaker Gustaf Nilson's and I was tired so I was allowed to stay there, they were very kind.
Thursday 13, 1908. I left after paying and Nilson accompanied me, then we came to South Myckleby, he had some business there and I sold books and gave them tracts. I sold several, for the people were home, it had rained. But we looked each other in the eyes very hard. My companion gave a tract to a man and then the Mininster was in a hurry to tell that it was a Mormon tract and that they were dangerous to read, my companion offered a tract to him also but he refused to accept it. Then we arrived in Dogerhamn and later to Alburnna where we were allowed to stay with the farmer Carlson, and it cost 75 ore.
Wednesday 19th. We went through several small towns, Wentling - Lindby - Lunda - Barbeang and finally Ottenby, that is a Royal estate and also the last southly estate on Oland. On the east side it has 14 small farms and has 30 laborers but there are 2 or 3 men out taking care of the light house. Then we went from Ottenby on the east side of Visby, and there Brother Jenson went across Oland to Digershamn and home to Kalmar for he sold his books and I continued to Ossby and there I stayed with the fisherman Johanson after asking for a place to stay at 20 different places.
Friday 20th. After paying Mrs. Johanson 75 ore I went to sell books and tract. They were all out in the fields so the business was poor. In the evening I arrived at Myckleby. I tried to get lodging in several places and finally I was allowed to stay with the shoemaker Erikson. I bore a strong testimony to his wife so when the husband asked 75 ore for the bed, his wife thought it was wrong to receive anything but he didn't think so, he said he had to pay 2 crown for only a bad, once.

Then the train carried him to the harbor where the boat Drott waited for him. He arrived at the station at 9:50 and left at 10:30 a.m. The people were quite, they hardly said harrah to their King. Wednesday, the 26th. Then we went through several towns selling books and tracting. It also rained a little in the evening. We were allowed to stay with Anderson Hulterstad. It cost 1 crown. During the night I had a dream. I thought I saw Rina who had been dead for 15 years. She had a stiff white collar around her neck and I thought that my wife said that she would keep her collar on so I began to cry bitterly. So when I woke I was wet of tears.
Thursday, the 27th. I came to a priest, the parish minister Wulw at Hulterstad, wanting to sell books and he wanted to know what books I was selling and I told him and he commanded me to leave so I told him that he was like the highpriests at the time of Christ, he opened two doors he didn't want to speak to me but threw me out, but it did not happen faster than I wanted and he said that if I sold some more tracts he would send the sheriff after me. It rained and was cold all day. I was frozen and cold and could not find lodging anyplace. I brought that bush from Alvaret on Oland. This Alvaret is a desolate stretch of about 1 mile wide and several feet long (Swedish Mile) and it is only rocks, good for building. At noon hour I came to a big mansion, I gave them some tracts, but they would not buy books. Then we walked about a block, then a fine woman came running after us, and I thought that now I'll be scolded, for I thought she came from the Ministers or the Sheriff, but I was wrong. When she came up to me she invited me to dinner and when I came to the porch she asked me to sit down and there a fine table was set with fine food and I gave her a book "Rays of Living Light". Tuesday 22nd September. I, and the brethren Jonson and Larson visited the castle and saw many things from way back, household things of different kinds and some old weapons that they used in olden days. We saw the castle church and the body of Christ in natural size, made of lumber and nailed to the cross and in another room there were collections, some portraits of the stone age and many other things. One room was from Erik XIV and that was very beautiful and it was the only room that was kept from the old times. It showed several castles that were made of wood and inlaid in the walls. It also showed paintings in the ceiling where Erik XIV hunted bear and boars. The floor was very fine. The castle was built by Knut Erikson Sverker, 1180-1200.

She has also given to Carl Nordberg about 100 crown, that he swindled her out of. That it was her inheritance, also came Carl Jonson and received 2 crown 50 ore from her after he had fallen away from the church. Saturaday, 13th. I went to the station with a letter to President Hallstrom. It snowed all day.
Sunday, 14th. We had a good Sunday School, but no open meeting for the snow.
Monday, 15th. I sent a letter to Hanna and Utahposten to Freden. It snowed today. Received a letter from Hanson at Copenhagen - letter from Sister Rosen at Billsbro that we should come over for her son Alvar, was sick and this we did at once, but in the evening or adternoon it came a very bad weather. We arrived at Billsbrow a little later than 12. Their son, Alvar, was very sick and we administered to him. In the evening I said they all could go to bed and I stayed up all night alone. Brother and Sister Rozen have been awake for 3 nights so they were all worn out. The boy could rest as long as I hold my hand in his. At 3 o'clock another son - 5 years - awoke. He looked as if he was scared to death, he said that he saw something in the room that wanted to take him. They held the blanket over him but it did not help. He only cried that they came against him - so that Brother and Sister Rosen carried him but that did not help, he cried as if he was put in the fire. I took him and he became silent - and so he said that they came and wanted to take his fingers, so I held the coat around him as far as it reached and so I held his hands with my hand and with the other hand on the head of the other boy, he is about 8 years old, and so both rested and the small one I could lay down and he slept well. But they had the little girl - 1 - she had been sick in the hospital for a couple of months. She woke up and I had to put her too to sleep. At 7 I went into a little chamber to rest and Brother Adamson went in there in my place. I layed for 3 hours but could hardly sleep and then I went up but it seemed like nothing helped. Brother Rosen says that it was evil spirits, because he saw them.
Tuesday, 16th. Today I am not feeling too well after the night's awake and all were sick and the heart of Alvar beat like it would burst, so I says to Rosen that he had better send for a doctor and so he did. It cost him 5 crown and so no medicine was used after all. A while after Brother Rosen left, we administered to the little one so he became better, so that when his father came back from the doctor, he (Alvar) met his father and he was very happy and also the other boy was better, so after Brother Rosen had walked more than 12 miles for the doctor and then been without food it tasted fine. I have fasted 30 hours and Adamson 24. Then Brother Adamson went home, but they wanted that I should stay over night, which I did. In the night that followed they all could sleep.
