STATUS QUO MCMLIX

This publication presents the schools of the Ballina Inspectorate at this time Education Week, 1959 and their origins.

URALBA PUBLIC SCHOOL

The building, which once occupied the spot where the weathershed now stands, is built on a knoll, with the ground sloping away on all sides and would be more easily seen by travelled on the Lismore-Ballina Highway were it not for the numerous shade trees which provide shelter for the birds and the koalas. These quaint little animals are almost daily visitors.

The original school was built in 1889 and named Uralba, the name it carries today, but official records show that in 1893 Mr. Inspector McLellan called it Duck Creek. However, in 1914 the name Uralba was again used by Mr. Inspector Henry, but later in 1922 Mr. Inspector A. W. Hicks introduced the name Towalbyn, which name survived until 1951, when Mr. Inspector C. Ebert, the present Area Director of Education was the last to use it, for in 1953 Mr. Inspector Bryant restored the name Uralba to the records and as such it is still known.

SCHOOL ALWAYS SMALL

The school has always been a one-teacher small school and the number of pupils attending has varied from 14 at the opening in 1889 to as high as 45 in 1920, until at the present time the enrolment is 17. Many teachers have been in charge, but the one to stay the longest was undoubtedly Mr. T. Malone, who held sway for sixteen years. The present teacher is Mr. J. Ferguson.

This fertile little valley was first visited by the timber getters and then by settlers who engaged in maize growing and dairying, and later in growing sugar cane. Banana and peanut crops are now the chief accompaniment with dairying.

An active and co-operative P. and C. Association has grown round the school and much good work has been achieved. For, besides raising money for the various school extras, local effort has cleared the grounds, built a tennis court, formed a garden by transporting soil, and built a weathershed. The association has provided a radio and renewed it, and more recently installed a telephone in the school.
