Farewell Gathering:- A large number of church people assembled in the Methodist Church to say farewell to the Rev. and Mrs. T. HOF, prior to their departure to Ithaca. Mr. L.A. FAULKNER, and solos by Miss B. PRATT, Miss E. BRUCKNER, and Mr. D. PRATT. On behalf of the church Mr. L.A. WISS presented Mr. HOF with a wallet of notes, and Miss I. BRUCKNER on behalf of the Ladies Church Help Society, presented to Mrs. HOF a salad bowl. After service on Sunday night Mr. HOF was presented with a framed picture of the Milford Methodist Church, and Mrs. HOF was presented with exylonite mirror and brushes from the Ladies Church Guild.

Baptist Church:-- Prize giving and a programme by the children was held at the Boonah Baptist Church on 5th April, when the opportunity was taken to make presentations to Mr. H. NIELSON and Mr. B.J. HUTH, in appreciation of their services to the church. The presentations were made by Mr. J. SCHNEIDER. Reference was made to Mr. H. NEILSEN'S 16 years faithful service as preacher at the church, and to Mr. H. HUTH for coming over from Kulgen once a month to conduct service. Songs and recitations were given by the children, a solo by Mr. H. NEILSEN, and a recitation by Mrs. B.J. HUTH. Refreshments were served by the ladies.

Cheers Bev Ah! the good old send off's, I can still remember them at the school and the old barn dances that were held frequently. Every new barn had to be christened by a dance, in our part of the woods anyway.

Love at First Sight

" It was love at first sight, " a 76 year old bride said today with a fond look at her 80 year old bridegroom."

I feel my life has just begun," the groom, William WALLACE, a retired coalminer, replied.

On Thursday he married silver-haired Mrs. Alice McKENZIE. It was his first wedding, but her third. Mrs. WALLACE said she met her new husband while holidaying recently.

Asked about a honeymoon, Mr. WALLACE said they would be busy with household chores in their neat weatherboard cottage for a while, but might go away later. "It is too hot just now for a honeymoon," he said.

Obituary

Some Old Timers

" Battler " writes:--

In the last two days two of the city's very old-time residents have gone to the Great Beyond. Mrs. BARNES, the mother of Mr. Tom BARNES, of Messrs.TUCKER and NANKIVELL, died at the great age of 94 years. The lady was also the mother of the late Mrs. R.G. TUCKER. Mrs. BARNES landed at Melbourne in 1853 and came onto Rockhampton in the early sixties.

-------------------

Tom BEVIS, who used to be the best known man about town, has also "painted" his last scene. Tom BEVIS, who was born in England, arrived in Rockhampton in 1862 or 1863, and was 91 years and 6 months at the time of his death. He was early connected with the Scandinavian Hall, a free-for-all music hall erected on the corner of Denham and Little East Streets. Tom must have been a pretty tactful manager to be able to handle the rough crowds who used to frequent the hall. The visitors comprised both sexes--and it was no trouble to buy into a row.

BEVIS used to sing old-time songs, one favourite among the people being the " Blue Tail Fly." For some time after Tom was known as " Billy BARLOW." he was naturally gifted and was clever as a signwriter and scene painter. He painted the scenery at the School of Arts and the old Theatre Royal, and he also used to handle all the posters for the travelling companies. In those days Mr. R.G. TUCKER'S [senr] place of business was at the corner of Denham and Alma streets. Tom BEVIS used to paint the names on the coffin plates. BEVIS could have written wonderful theatrical history of early Rockhampton, as he was associated with all the old companies from the 60's down to the 80's. He was always rather reserved and in latter years very deaf, which made him irritable. He spent a lot of time in the School of Arts. He is the last link with the old theatrical profession of the early days. BEVIS married in Rockhampton at the age of 21 years and leaves a family of five children.
