Caryl M Sheldon, 100, who retired from the Los Angeles County Superior Court in 1963 after 38 years on the Bench. A native of Ellis, Kansas, Sheldon was educated in Ontario, California and at USC. He served with the US Army at Meuse-Argonne, France, during World War I. He won election to three courts, serving for two years in Police Court, four years in Municipal Court and 32 years in Superior Court. Among his key decisions was the ruling that prohibited traffic on Los Angeles' historic Olivera Street. [He died] On April 3, in Albuquerque, N.M. Judge Sheldon was very proud that he had stopped the forcible eviction of the shopkeepers from L. A's historic Plaza instead of allowing the (then) city fathers to evict them. Probably, in those times, most Judges would have sided with the city. Today, different "City Fathers" now brag about Olivera St. as one of the jewels in the city's center. |
