Notes for SAMUEL HAYDEN:

Samuel came to Monson, New Hampshire, (now Hollis), in 1760, purchasing the Jonathan Taylor farm. He was engaged in farming, raising large crops of corn and rye. He belonged to the Monson Militia and played the snare drum for his company. There is no record of him ever having a family.

Samuel died suddenly in the 58th year of his age, leaving the homestead farm to his nephew, Josiah Hayden.

He married MARY PATCH April 19, 1797, daughter of THOMAS PATCH and MOLLY UPTON. She was born March 01, 1773 in Hollis, New Hampshire, and died August 17, 1850 in Hollis, New Hampshire.

Notes for JOSIAH HAYDEN:

Josiah Hayden's father died while he was young, and he was committed to the care of his uncle, Samuel Hayden of Hollis, and came to Hollis to reside with him when only about four or five years old. Josiah succeeded to the homestead, engaging in agricultural pursuits. He was a prosperous and successful farmer, with other produces, raised hops to some extent.

Josiah was a trapper, and during good seasons the number of pelts dressed by him ran very high. He was also engaged in the making of pitch and turpentine, and, building a saw mill, he lad the foundations of the extensive milling and lumbering business carried on by his son and grandsons. Josiah was a Whig, and a member of the Congregational church. All of the nine children of Josiah and Mary lived to grow to maturity.

He married HARRIET NEEDHAM December 31, 1830, daughter of STEARNS NEEDHAM and HARRIET BAILEY. She died January 09, 1869 in Hollis, New Hampshire.

Notes for SAMUEL HAYDEN:

Samuel's father died when he was about sixteen years old. The management of the homestead and the care of a large family devolved upon him; in this he ws assisted somewhat by the advice of his neighbor, Captain Daniel Bailey, who proved a friend in time of need. Samuel was a successful farmer.

Samuel could manage and drive a pair of oxen better than any man that stood at Hollis. A man of considerable infuluence, he was guardian of minor heirs, etc; he accumulated quite a property. He was prominent in military affairs, serving as orderly Sargent of Hollis, old fifth Company of Infantry, belonging to the fifth Regiment , of State Militia, was ensign and Lieutenant of this company under the command of Captain John Mooar, and succeeded him in 1836, as Captain of that company.

Notes for SAMUEL FRANKLIN HAYDEN:

S. Franklin Hayden was in the Fifteenth N.H. Regiment, and was at the seige of Port Hudson.

The 15th N.H. Regiment went to camp Thursday, October 2, 1862, and the company was mustered in October 9. The company chose the non-commissioned officers November 1. There were 22 from Hollis. All the Hollis boys returned alive, but one, John C. Smith, who died three days before the company mustered out.

Member of GAR Post JN Worcester served ans Comander and Secretary member of the Charity Lodge of Good Temlars. Believer in temperance.

From the Hollis Times, Nov. 10, 1911: J. Newton Hayden, Hollis, age 20, wounded at Drewrys Bluff, Va., May 14, 1864.

Josiah mustered out of the service Dec. 22, 1864. (The Hollis Times).

Notes for WILLIS D. HAYDEN:

At his death at age 62, Willis was one of the largest independent milk concerns in the state. He died at Portsmouth Hospital.

Willis was one of the first state milk producers to install lpasteurization equipment, and also introduced vitamin D milk in this section (Dover) of New Hampshire.

The 10th annual reunion of the Hayden family was held at the home of Lester J. Hayden recently with 31 present, guests coming from Dover, Milford, and Wilton and Southboro and Somerville, Mass. A bountiful dinner was served at noon. The following officers were elected: Walter N. Hayden, president; Phillip Hayden, Secretary: Mrs Elsie Hayden, treasurer; Miss Bertha Hayden, historian; Miss Grace Hayden, and Miss Bertha Hayden and Mrs Ida Adams of Milford, executive commitee. It was reported that there are 15 postoffices in the United States of the name of Hayden and a Hayden magazine is published in the middle west.The date of the gathering was the birthday of Raymond White who was present and the 25th wedding anniversary of Mr. and Mrs. Winnifred Woods and Mr and Mrs Walter N. Hayden both couples being presented with gifts of silver. Mrs. Walter N. Hayden wore her wedding gown and hat and treated the guests with some of her wedding cake made 25 years ago. Pictures were taken of the group.
