James Akey The Elder1,2      4th great grandfather
b. 31 December 1784, d. 31 January 1870, #993
Pop-up Pedigree

Father   Peter Ake3 b. before 1764    No documentation for this.

Birth 25 October 1784 James may have been born on 25 October 1784. This from Family Bible information copied by descendants of James Akey, a son of this man.4

Birth 31 December 1784 James was born on 31 December 1784 likley in at Maryland. This date was calculated from gravestone information. On the 1860 census he says that he was born in Pennsylvannia. In the Sketch on Isaac Akey, this man's son, in the History of Logan county, Ohio, Isaac claims that his father was of Irish descent and was born in Maryland. On the 1880 census both Isaac and Ellis Akey say that their father was born in Maryland.5,6,7

Marriage 23 August 1809 James Akey The Elder, 24 years old, married Sarah McCall wife #1, who was 19 years old, daughter of John McCall and Sarah Hutton, before 23 August 1809 as the Hinshaw records tell us that "Sarah Eakey (formerly McCall) was disciplined for marrying outside of unity on 23 August 1809. "Mou" meant that they had married out unity to someone who was not a member of the Society. The actual marriage took place in 1809.10

5 October 1809 Squire Thomas Carson's marriage register indicates that James Akey The Elder and Sarah McCall wife #1 were married by him on 5 October 1809 in Washington county, PA. This appears not to be a Quaker wedding, but rather a secular one.11

Cen1810 1810 James Akey The Elder appears on the 1810 census in Somerset township, Washington county, Pennsylvania.   James is 16 to 26 years old. If he was born in 1784 then he would be just about 26 on this census. Sarah is also 16 to 26. They have 1 male under 10 who is Peter. There is another male 10-16 that can not be their child. Could be hired help, or a relative of Sarah or James.12

(Witness) Birth 4 July 1810 Son, Peter was born 4 July 1810 in at Washington county, Pennsylvania.. Isaac Akey gives the name Peter as his oldest brother. Since Parents were married in 1810 Peter must have been born sometime after 1810. He does show on the 1810 census therefore we are assuming that he was born before that census was taken. The actual birthdate come from a family Bible in the possession of Pat Paschen of Ogden Dunes, Indiana.1

Living 18 September 1815 In 18 September 1815 James Akey The Elder was living in at Washington county, Pennsylvania, as son Isaac was born there.13

research 22 November 1816 Find at Stark county, Ohio, Internet, 22 November 1816 James Akey May have purchased with G. Firestone 160 acres of Stark co R14, T20, Sec 7 at the Steubenville Land Office. Did the W 1/2 of this reverted for non payment of Tax??14   Is this our James Akey or another???

Cen1820 1820 James Akey The Elder may appear on the 1820 census in Fallowfield township, Washington county, Pennsylvania. On this census James Akey is 26 to 45 which is consistent with a birthdate of 1784. Sarah is 26-45 which is also consistent. Three males under 10 are Isaac born in 1815, John born in 1817 and Ellis born in 1819. The one male 5 to 10 is likely Peter. The one female under 10 is either Jane or the unknown daughter (or hired help) who shows on the 1830 census. There are two females 26 to 45. One is surely mother Sarah. The identity of the other is not known. It is possible that she is a sister of James, ie. Margaret Achey, that shows on the 1850 census in Fallowfield township AFTER James and Sarah moved to Oho. She is 63 years old in 1850 therefore born ca 1787.16

1823 In 1823 Akey and Culbertson ran a store in Limaville, Stark county Ohio. May not be this James, tho.17

research 1824 Find at Lexington township, Stark county, Ohio, 1824 Was this 157 acres.? Get a good date and description. He purchased the NW ¼ of R6, T19, Sec 3 from a man named Beeson for $275.18

1824 According to Isaac Akey's obit and the sketch on Isaac in "The History of Logan county, Ohio" he claims that this family moved to Stark County, Ohio from Washington county, Pennsylvannia about 1824. Land transactions, seem to tell us that they came to Ohio before 1824.19,13  At least they purchased land before 1824.

Tax List from 1825 to 1837 James Akey The Elder appears on the tax list or duplicate for Lexington township, Stark county, Ohio, from 1825 to 1837. In 1833 this land was valued at $316 and he paid $2.63.6 tax on the land. In 1835 the value was $363 and the tax $2.08.7. In 1836 the land was valued at $363 even tho' he had sold 20 acres to Bowman Hannold and he paid $2.90.4 tax on this land. In 1837 he again appears on the tax duplicate in Stark county, Ohio. Section 3 is on the northern border of Stark county, bordering on Portage county.20,21,22,23

1828 James is listed as a Justice of the Peace for Lexington township of Stark County, Ohio for the years of 1828 and 1831. He may have been JP for the intervening years also.24,25

1830 In 1830 a James Akey signed the first platting of the town of Limaville in Stark county. We assume that it was THIS James Akey.26

Cen1830 1830 James Akey The Elder and Sarah McCall wife #1 appear on the 1830 U.S. Census in Lexington township, Stark county, Ohio, James is the male 40 to 50. He shows as James Akey Eqs. (I doubt if he was really a lawyer, so this might just be a way to define the person). Wife, Sarah McCall is the female 40-50, tho' on this census she is not named. The 2 males under 5 are assumed to be Friend and Samuel. The 2 males 5 to 10 are likely James and Ellis. The 2 males 10 to 15 are Isaac and John. Peter shows as 15-20. Jane is the female 15-20. There is an unidentified female 20-30. We will assume at this point that this is an girl child for whom we do not as yet have a name. Or she could be hired help, or a relative.27

Marriage 29 Dec 1831 James Akey The Elder performed the marriage of Isaac P Hannold and Sally Ann Weimer on 29 December 1831 at Stark county, Ohio; It is possible that Isaac and SallyAnn were married on 4 Feb 1832. This marriage is recorded in book A, p228 of the Stark county Records and gives a date of 29 December 1831, but this record was not made at that time but done later. Isaac appears as Isaac Harrold. They were married by James Akey JP. James Akey was the father the wife of Boman Hannold,a cousin of Isaac. DAR copy of the registration says on p 83 that this marriage may have been on 9 Dec 1831. "Early Stark county Marriages" gives the date as 29 Dec 1831 by James Akey, JP.28,29,30,31

20 January 1836 On 20 January 1836 James Akey sold   20 acres of NW¼ of R6 T19 sec 3 to Bowman Hannold, consisting of 20 acres for ??$$.(Could not read).   Bowman was married to James' daughter Jane. Exactly where is this and how much was paid? Vol U p 55. When the land in Lexington township was originally sold to settlers thru the Steubenville Land office the price was $2 per acre.25,33

Marriage #2 1 November 1838 James Akey The Elder, 53 years old, married Mary Maxwell wife #2 1 November 1838 in Stark county, Ohio. By Hiram Miner, minister. This was a second marriage for James Akey.4

Cen1840 1840 James Akey The Elder may appear on the 1840 U.S. census in Lexington township, Stark county, Ohio where James Akey is 50 to 60 years old, involved in manufacturing and trading. It appears as tho' there are 6 children at home plus a younger wife than Sarah McCall or 7 children if the mystery daughter that appears on the 1830 census is still at home. We believe that the wife is now Mary Maxwell and she would be younger than Sarah McCall would have been.   Son Peter is married and living in the village of Lima in Lexington township. Daughter Jane is married and also lives in Lima. Isaac, John, James are most likely the three males 20-30, though one of these could be missing and Ellis the third. There are two males 10-15, which could be Ellis and Friend, Ellis and Samuel or Samuel and Friend. Seems more likely that Friend is dead at this point and the two are Ellis and Samuel as we know that they were still alive. There is only one female child listed, and she is under 5. This would be Sarah who from other census information would be about 1 year old. One female 20-30 could be the mystery daughter and the female 30-40 could be Mary Maxwell. IF James the younger, is not one of the 20-30 males then possibly Friend is still living.36

1841 In 1841 James Akey of Stark Co Ohio purchased land in Logan co Ohio.  Isaac Elliott was one of the witnesses to this transaction.37 This MAY be the Isaac Elliot who was married to Ruth McCall a sister of the first wife of this James Akey.  These two families are intermarried several times.....plus they all tended to name their children with the same names, making it difficult to determine WHICH one you are reading about.

This marriage is recorded in civil records and it appears that she was asked to leave the "congregation" for "marrying outside of the discipline". The Quaker congregation, that is.  They were married by William Benham. 42,29,43,10

research 1848 Find 1848 If Mary Hicklin was condemed for marrying contrary to discipline then WHY did it take until 22 April 1848 to this to be done? Is there still some confusion on these wives?10
