Birth 30 Dec 1810 Charles Grow was born on 30 December 1810 at Newbury, Vermont. If at death on 30 Oct 1898 he was 87-4-30 then he was born about 31 May 1811. His parents are given as Steven George and Sarah Grow on the death record.1,5,4,3

Marriage 10 Feb 1837 Charles Grow George, 26 years old, married Phebe Mott Hoag, who was 22 years old, 10 February 1837.6,7  

Cen1850 12 Aug 1850 Charles Grow George and Phebe Mott Hoag appear on the 1850 census of Marengo, Calhoun county, Michigan on page 161B, line 14. Charles is 39 years old, born in Vermont and is the Post Master. Phebe is 36 and born in Vermont. Children are:

There is also a Helen Hoag, 2 and her father PB Hoag 21, living in this household, with no relationship given.6

1854 In 1854 Charles Duncombe and C.G. George were both witnesses to the sale of land by, Wm B. Havens, to School District. Charles Duncombe's father was the second husband of Dolly Amanda, daughter of Wm B. Havens  and C. G. George was her last husband.

 
Land 18 Dec 1855 Charles George witnessed the sale of land by of William B[ennet] Havens to William Henry Havens on on 18 December 1855 in Van Buren county,  Michigan; William B. Havens sold 24 acres off South end of NW 1/4, Sec 22 T4,R16 to son,  William Henry Havens. The rest of this parcel is the cemetery in Keeler. This transaction may be recorded twice. (see Book O; p211 5 March 1861 or Vol O, p627 which was 18 Dec 1855. The witnesses to this land transactions were C. G. George, future husband of William's daughter Dolly, and W. B. Fowler, the father of his daughter Jane's husband, David.8

Marriage #2 4 March 1860 Charles Grow George, 49 years old, married Dolly Amanda Havens, who was 34 years old, daughter of William B[ennet] Havens and Hannah M Hale, 4 March 1860 in Keeler, Van Buren county, Michigan. This marriage is listed in the early marriages of Van Buren county MI 1836-1866 with no number. This was a second marriage for Charles and third marriage for Dolly.

CEN1860 19 July 1860 Charles Grow George appears on the 1860 census of Keeler village, Van Buren county, Michigan taken on 19 July 1860 as Charles George.  In this household are Charles C or G. George, his two children and her two children. They were married within the year. Note: She has property of her own. $1200 of real estate and $200 of personal. She was born in New York. Her oldest child was born in New York and her younger child was born in Michigan. She is 35 years old and husband, Charles C. George is 49 years old. His real property is valued at $3500 and personal property at $800. Charles is a Wagon Maker. They are living very close to her parents, William and Hannah Havens. Dolly's daughter Mary is 10 and son Wesley is 7.9

Wittness 28 March 1865 Charles George performed the marriage of William B[ennet] Havens and Fanny Tyler on 28 March 1865 at Keeler, Van Buren county, Michigan, as JP; Charles is actually  William's son in law. William was 75, Fanny Tyler was 66. She came from Hartford. Witnesses were a daughter of William, Dolly A. George and John W. Watkins. (This John W. could be John Wesley Watkins, son of Dolly by her first husband.)   Dolly's first husband was Marshall Watkins. Since Fanny's first ?? husband James Hastings died in 1865 she was not a widow very long. The listing for the marriage on Van Buren marriages on Rootsweb gives 1866 which is not correct. I have a copy of the original marriage registration.10,11

Cen1870 22 July 1870 Charles Grow George appears on the 1870 census taken on 22 July 1870 in the Village of Keeler, Van Buren county, Michigan. Charles is 59 years old and born in VT, a painter and was $1000 real and $1200 personal property. Dolly is his wife and is 45 years old, born in New York. Wesley Watkins who is the only child in household. He is 16 and born in New York. Wesley may be on this census twice. . He may also be with Henry Old and wife, 'M' in Hartford, as 16 years old.13,5,14

Cen1880 19 June 1880 Charles Grow George and Dolly Amanda Havens show on the 1880 census for Keeler village, Van Buren county, Michigan taken 19 June 1880. Charles George is 68 years old, a painter, born in VT, parents born in NH; wife DOLLA, ( who is actually Dolly) is 55, born in NY and her parents were born in CT. They have a 9 year old granddaughter living with them, Dolla Olds, born in Michigan, father born in MI and mother born in NY.  This Dolly would have been born about 1871. This was the daughter of Mary Watkins and Henry OLDS.16

Death 30 Oct 1898 Charles Grow died on 30 October 1898 at Keeler, Van Buren county, Michigan at age 87. Recorded in Vol C, #3543 of Van Buren county death records. Cemetery records indicate that the was 87 - 4- 20 at death. He was living in Keeler.4,17

Burial Charles was buried at Keeler cemetery in Keeler, Michigan.4
