| Father | Joseph Havens b. 1753, d. 1 April 1833 | |
| Mother | Martha Bennett b. 7 April 1755, d. 9 October 1845 |
| Birth | 1785 | Joseph was born in 1785 at
Argyll, Washington county, New York. On the 1850 census he says that he
is 65 years old and born in NY. Which would mean that he was born ca
1785. RoseMary Avita and HH contributors give birth dates for him from
1779 to 1781. Zatarian on her DAR application gives a birth date of ca
1784 which is consistent with his response to the 1850 census. The cemetery information appears to say that he was born in 1779 and that he was 72 at death in 1851or 1857. The print out is very faded. If he died in 1851 at the age of 72 then he was born about 1779. If he died in 1857 at 72 then he was born in 1785.1,2,3,4,5 |
| Cen1790 | 1790 | Joseph Havens Jr may appear in the household of parents Joseph Havens and Martha Bennett
on the 1790census for Argyle, New York. The part of Argyle
township in which they were then living is now Fort Edward township.
They were living adjacently to William Bennett and Charles Bennett and
three houses beyond, Henry Bennett. It is strongly suspected that
William, Charles and Henry Bennett were brothers and that Martha was
their sister. Joseph shows with 2 males over 16, one of which has to be
Joseph. There are 3 males under 16 and 3 females. One of the males over 16 is Joseph, the other is not known. Could be a brother, or could be Joseph's father. The males under 16 are likely Stephen born ca1780 and therefore about 10; Elijah born ca 1873 and about 7; Joseph Jr, bca1875 and about 5. The females are Martha and the two daughter are likely Rachel bca 1784-1790 and an unknown daughter.1,6,7,8 |
| Marriage | circa 1810 | Joseph Havens Jr married Hannah Susanna Hopkins, daughter of Thomas Hopkins Jr. and Hannah Baker,
circa 1810 in Argyle, Washington, New York. Michigan Heritage does NOT
give a date. If son Joseph B. was born in 1811 then marriage was likely
before 1810. The DAR Application of Lorraine Healton claims that this
marriage orccurred at Ft. Edward in Washington county, NY.2,3,4,9 |
| History tid bit | 1815 | Joseph Blivens was sent by the agent of the land
office in Bath, in 1794, to build a house to be used as a tavern for
the accomodation of settlers one Pulteney estate, at the twenty-two
mile tree. He came and built the house on the farm owned by the late
George Gardner at the junction of the road up the Cohocton with the
road leading from Naples to Dansville. Some four years after he married
the Hooker girl and sold out the twenty-two mile tree, and bult what
was known in those days as a double log tavern where the O. Wetmore
store and dwelling now stands, (this now was about 1898.) which was the
first house built in North Cohocton. After roads were laid out through
that section it was called Bivens Corners for some years. It is said he
sold out to William Havens, who kept the tavern for a while. He and his brother Joseph came
here in an early day. Joseph built a large two-story farme building
where the Eel Pot road forks off from the Naples road, and kept tavern
there for a number of years. He was not a little surprised on awakening
one morning to find a dozen Indians stretched on the floor before the
fire, who had taken posssession whle he slept. William Havens
sold out the corner to Samue Hartwell in 1815." GAZETEER OF STEUBEN
COUNTY, NEW YORK, CHAPTER 1, Millard F. Roberts, 1891, pp. 231 and 232.10 |
| Cen1820 | 1820 | Joseph Havens Jr may appear on the 1820 census in
Argyle township, Washington county, New York. With wife and 4 sons and
4 daughters. Two brothers of his wife, Benjamin and David Hopkins lived
next door.9 |
| research | If he had 8
children before 1820 as 8 children show on that census, then we are
missing at least 2 males and 2 females from this family, as we are
reasonably certain that at least 2 males and 2 females were born AFTER
1820. |
|
| research | 1821 | Find at
Allen, Allegany county, New York, 1821 Possibly, Henry B is the son of
Joseph. Henry B shows on the 1850 census in Allen, Allegany county, New
York as follows: Birth age. HAVENS, HENRY B. 1821 29 N.Y. HAVENS, MARTHA M. 1828 22 ENGLAND HAVENS, MARTHA 1845 5 N.Y. HAVENS, MARY E. 1849 1 N.Y. This does not seem likely. Joseph was the father of Henry but not necessairly Henry B or this Joseph.11 |
| research | 1825 | Find 1825 If he was born in 1785 he is NOT over 45 in 1825. |
| research | 1825 | Find 1825 Land: Yates to Steuben NY 1800-1823 Vol 3 p9. |
| 1825 | It is said that he brought his family to N. Cohocton about 1825. Likely from Argyll in Washington county, NY. BUT, his father and mother may have come to the Cohocton area earlier than this.9 | |
| CenNY25 | 1825 | Joseph shows on the 1825 NewYork State Census in Cohocton, Steuben county, New York where he shows as over 45,
wife over 45, there are 4 males under 21, 1 daughter under 16; he owns
25 acres; 9 cows, 21 sheep; 10 hogs, produced 20 yards of fabric; 12
yards of wool and 20 yards of linen in the last year.12 |
| 1830 | On this 1830 census Joseph Havens Jr, Benjamin
Dearborn and Francis Blakeley all appear on the same page of the
census. Jane Havens is the purported wife of Benjamin Dearborn could be
an aunt of Joseph Havens and Francis Blakely married a sister of Joseph
Jr. |
|
| Cen1830 | 1830 | Joseph Havens Jr and Hannah Susanna Hopkins
appear on the 1830 U.S. Census in Cohocton township, Steuben county,
New York, On this census Joseph Jr. appears as 40-50, correct for a
birth date of 1785. Wife is 40 to 50 correct for a birthdate of 1788
for Hannah Susanna. It appears that Joseph Sr and wife Martha are in
the household also as there are two adults over 70. The 1 Male 5-10 is
likely Calvin if his 1822 birthdate is correct, the 1 male 10-15 is
likely Chancellor is his birthdate is ca 1820 he would be 10, 1 male
15-20, likely Zebulon who is purported to have been born in 1815 and
therefore 15 on this census. The other male 15-20 is likely Joseph B
who was born in 1811 and was about 19 at the time of this census. There is a male 20-30 and a male 30-40 who we can not identify.
The daughters that show on this census are Eunice, under 5, Hannah 5-10
and a daughter 15-20 who we assume is Emily as we do not have a brith
date for her. Martha Bennett Havens in the female 70-80. The male 20-30
CAN NOT be George Thurston as it seems that he has his own household.13 |
| Land | 5 Feb 1831 | Joseph Havens Jr. of Cohocton, Steuben County NY, sold
for $400 31.5 acres of Lot 132, Argyle Patent, to Charles C. Hopkins of
Fort Edward and John Williams of Argyle, reserving one acre sold to
David Williams. A sister of Joseph's, Jerusha was married to Prince Williams and lived in Ft. Edward, Washington county, New York. Prince was married previously and had a son David and also a son John. David appears on the 1850 census in Kingsbury, Washington co. NY with a wife Margaret, born in Ireland and 3 children while John is in Ft. Edwards with a wife, who we think may be Hannah Hopkins and 7 children. How is this Hannah Hopkins related to the Hannah Hopkins that married this Joseph Havens?? The origin of this land as related in the "The Argyle Patent" was from King George III when he granted land in Washington Co. to a large group of primarily Scottish immigrants. It is sometimes called the "scotch patent". Many were from Argyllshire, Scotland. Most families received 500-600 acres, the total grant reaching above 47,000 acres in what is now Argyle Twp. Lot #132 was originally 350 acres and was given to Daniel Shaw. It is located midway along the western edge of the Patent, not too far from "Hudson's River" as it is shown on the map. There are two nearby tributaries to the Husdon, the Moses Kill and the Batten Kill.14 |
| CenNY35 | 1835 | Joseph shows on the 1835 NewYork State Census in
Cohocton, Steuben county, New York with family; including himself = 5
males, 4 females, 2 of which are under 16; 1 male is 18-45; but only 1 voter.
30 acres; 4 cows; 2 horses, 1 pig and produced 35 yards linen. The one
male 18-45 could be Zebulon as it appears that he never married and
would be about 20 years old in 1835.12 |
| Cen1840 | 1840 | Joseph Havens Jr appears on the 1840 U.S. census for Cohocton, Steuben county, New York where Joseph is the male 50-60 years old.
There is no wife in this household. His wife died in 1838. 5 children
are still at home and it appears as tho' his mother is in the
household, also.15 |
Cen1850![]() |
18 September 1850 | Joseph Havens Jr appears on the 1850 census of Conhocton, Steuben county, New York done on 18 September 1850 as 65 years old,
therefore born ca 1785. He is a farmer with $1600 of real estate.
Daughters Hannah and Eunice are still in the household and son Calvin
with there with his wife Catherine and son. Elijah, son of William H
Havens lives close by.16,17 |
| 1851 | Find 1851 Joseph in his will in 1851, names two gdau. with the last name of KEITH. Is there an error here???? Or did his brother George marry a KEITH and also the dau. of Joseph marry a man named Keith???? | |

| Joseph Jr. built a large two story house at the corner of Belpot Road and Naples Road and operated an inn or Tavern there. The location was once known as "Bull's Head". It is possible that was the name of the tavern.22 |
