Charlie Christopher Green1     husband of 3rd cousin 3xR
b. July 1856, d. 1950, #3666

Birth July 1856 Charlie  was born in July 1856 at Palo,  Michigan.2,3   This is a bit north and east of Ionia.  His parents were Horace Green and Druscilla Hopkins.  ALERT:  Hopkins and Havens were living close together in Washington county New York, a generation before this AND  there is at least one other marriage of a Hopkins and a Havens.

His father's family moved from Gainesville in Wyoming County NY, where they were some of the Holland Land purchasers.  They moved to Ionia about 1850...his father, Horace Green, came with his widowed mother and younger siblings.  There Horace married Drusilla Hopkins, had 3 children (Charlie was the middle child), and died in the 10 years between the censuses in 1850 and 1860.  When Charlies was four years old, his father went into the woods during a snowstorm hunting for a cow with a young calf. He got lost and the long exposure to the cold weather gave him pneumonia and he died. 9

Grandpa’s mother (Drusilla)  remarried, but evidently he and his stepfather were not too compatible, for as soon as he was old enough, he went to work for an elderly couple for his room and board.  Evidently they didn’t realize how much food a growing boy needed. Grandpa would be so hungry that he slipped out to the hen house and consumed a raw egg!  9

Charlie graduated from Michigan State in the 1800s when it was Michigan Ag College.  . He was a stonemason, (taught all his sons and sons in law the trades) carpenter, school teacher in several states, farmer, had fruit orchards, was a church deacon, played piano into his 90s, and sang old songs, yet was so tender that if one of us (quote from Vera) kids fell and skinned our knees etc. and cried, he cried right along with us.  He had so many pithy sayings...he said to me "Don't even thoughtlessly kill an insect....his life is as valuable to him as yours is to you".9

Cen1880 29 June 1880 Charlie C Green shows on the 1880 census taken on 29 June 1880 in as a 23 year old farmer, single, living with mother (who has remarried and is listed as Drusilla Brooks, 47) and a brother Edgar, 21.They are in Bloomer, Montcalm county, Michigan.
