| Find Havens Harbor ( P47) says possibly this
GILES was born in Italy of English parents. This is not consistent with
family tales that the Havens came from New England and were related in
some way with some of the original puritans. |
||
| research | Find Hon Henry P Havens and William Havens and Co were from New London CT, Also investigate Sag Harbor NY which is on Long Island. May have owned whalers at New London. Also note that Felix Havens claims that his grandfather Joseph had a brother named Richard. |
|
| Name Variation | Thurston Giles Havens was also found as Thurston Havens.1 and as Giles Havens. |
|
| Birth | circa 1698 | Thurston Giles was born circa 1698. He is reported to have been the 6th child of George II and Mary Remington.2,3 Named as fifth son in the will of his father in 1738. As Thurston Havens.7 |
| Birth | circa 1711 | Thurston Giles was born circa 1711 at Shelter Island, Suffolk county, New York. (LDS Film No. 1903667) gives 1711; Susan Benware says ca 1710.5 OR |
| Birth | 1715 | Thurston Giles Havens may have been born in 1715;
This birth date seems more likely, but the bible record shows 1698.
That could have been written after the fact.1,6 ( I have NOT seen this bible record.) |
| Marriage | 2 August 1752 | Thurston Giles Havens married Jerusha Polly, who was 21 years old, daughter of Daniel Polly and Jerusha Haughton, 2 August 1752 in First Congregational church, New Haven, Connecticut. Note on web page The
first Congregational CHURCH was organized at Gloucester, Mass., in
1642, removing from thence in 1650 to New London. Consequently we would
here correct the mistake made in the Preface of the First Book "Early
Connecticut Marriages" and number this as the 10th instead of the 13th
Congregational CHURCH organization of the state.1,8 IF he was born in 1698 he would have been 54 years old. Either this is a second marriage or there is a generation missing. Even if he was born in 1715 he would be 37 and so the possibility of this being a second marriage increases. |
| 1753 | He is said to have been living on Long Island in
1753. This from a bible record but whose Bible.?? Susposed to be in
Argyle NY in 1790. Michigan Heritage, Vol 7, p 190-192.9 |
|
| 1753 | Vera Yerington says that Joseph's(b1753) father
was Joseph also. And that he too served during the Revolutionary War.
In her work she says that Joseph b.1753 was born while his father was
transporting good from New York to Connecticut.10 |

| 1777 | Today I received from the National Archives, the
military records of Giles Havens of Connecticut. (Note from Mike
Shroeder, Feb 2003) Document #1: 1214 Giles Havens 4 Connecticut Regiment (Revolutionary War) Private Card Numbers 35120426 37151712 Number of personal papers herein : 0 Book Mark: RSP. 436786 Document #2 H / 4 / Conn. Enlisted Jan 1, 17.. Term of Enlistment D. War Remarks: Deserted April 5. (of 1777??) *This company was designated at various times as Capt. Jedediath Hyde's, Lieut. and Cpat. Robert Hallam's, Lieut. John Durkee's Regiment, Revolutionary War Appears in a book* Copied from Rolls of the organization named above. Date of appointment Jany 1 1777 or enlistment Term War Casualties deserted Apl 5 77 *This book appears to have been copied (from original rolls) in the Office of the Army Accounts under the Paymaster General, U.S.A. who was authorized by Congress, July 4, 1783, to settle and finally adjust all accounts whatsoever between the United States and the officers and soldiers of the American Army. (Journal American Congress, Vol. 4, pate 237j)-- Ok, this does not prove anything, but it may shed light, if this is our Giles, why there seems to be no information. (Who wants a deserter in their family?)11 |

| 1790 | Find 1790 GILES info____bca1698-1720; near Lake
Champlain, res on Long Island 1753; 1790 Census was in Argyle NY; was a
ship builder It appears there is a generation missing in this line. 'Giles or Silas' may be the son of the man that is on here as the father of Joseph, father of Wm. H. (My note) Another possiblity is that George Havens had a son Thurston whose son was Giles Thurston or Thurston Giles. The name Thurston is carried on in the family of Joseph Havens and Martha Bennett. |
|
| 1800 | If Giles is the father of Joseph and IF Giles was born in 1698 then he was pretty old when Joseph was born in 1753. Possibly a generation is missing. A Possibility that this Thurston Giles had a son, Joseph, that married Jerusha Polly is also a possibility. |
| Family | **Jerusha Polly | b. 3 May 1731, d. 9 April 1767 |
