!AInfoNew* 1095 In 1095 both Thomas and his father Enguerrand took up the cross and went on the First Crusade. They carried their feud to Jersalem and back. There is a "folk tale" from this exploit that explains the Crucy coat of arms. One or the other, it is not recorded which, with five compainions were surprised by a party of Moselms when out of armor. One of them took off his scarlet cloak trimmed with vair (squirrel fur), tore in into six pieces to make banners for recognition and fell upon the Moslems and annihilated them. In commenoration, a shield was adopted being the device of six horizonal bands, pointed, of red on white.3 
Marriage* circa 1100 Thomas de Coucy Count of Amiens married Ida de Hainaut, daughter of Baldwin II of Hainault and Ida of Louvain, circa 1100. They had at least one daughter:

!AInfoNew 1117 Untamed, he pursued a career of enmity and brigandage, against the church, towns and king. There are horror stories about his treatment of towns people and rebellious bourgeois. He was excommunicated by the Church, and ungirdled--in absentia-- of the knightly belt and the chuch ordered the anathema to be read against him every Sunday in every parish in Picardy. King Louis VI assemabled a force for war and succeeded in divesting him of stolen land and castles. Nevertheless, he attempted to save his soul from Hell by generous bequests to the Abbey of Nugent and founded another abbey at Premontre nearby.
