| Birth* | circa 1275 | Philip de was born circa 1275. Draycott lineage is continued through the second son, PHILIP DE DRAYCOTE (VIII). He married one Joan Eynourt. He predeceased his father however, having died by 1308, so never inherited the estate. He and Joan are recorded as having only one child, John. JOHN DE DRAYCOTE (IX), was certainly something of a character and indeed a bit of unruly man in his youth. In 1329 we hear of him and five accomplices entering the chaces, taking the deer and assaulting the servants of no less a man than the Earl of Lancaster! Next, on the Sunday before Christmas, 1330, we hear of him and others going to Carleton in Nottinghamshire, breaking into the house of Sibil de Forne, and while a Roger Savage took her jewels and silver spoons, John broke into her chamber hoping to carry off Joan, widow of John de Orreby, but, (luckily for Joan I imagine), he failed, "because Joan fled into another room, which they could not enter." Some seven years later, we hear of him being one of the leaders, (followed by several of his companions in the 1329 escapade), in a raid upon James de Stafford’s house in Sandon. In 1336 he also took part in the abduction of Margaret, daughter and heiress of Hugh de Audley whom Ralph, Lord Stafford carried off and married against her father’s will. It seems however, that it was not against the will of the lady concerned!! After this though, John seems to have quietened down, and indeed become quite a respectable gentleman! He was summoned as a Knight to the campaign at Crecy and Calais and served for many years at Westminster as Knight of the Shire for Staffordshire, (a forerunner to the modern day MP). John married twice, the name of his first wife is not known, though his widow was named Eva. He died sometime after 1368 and left a son and heir, (by his first wife), also named John.1 |
