Maud ("Matilda") was only child and heir and when her father died she was still an infant. King Edward I arranged that she should marry Henry, son of the king's brother Edmund. Henry expanded and completed Kidwelly Castle, which remained in Lancastrian hands, passing to John of Gaunt as Maud's estate passed to her granddaughter, Blanche, who became John of Gaunt's first wife.4,5
